Hometowns are a funny thing. People get very sentimental about where they're from, no matter how much they loved it or hated it growing up. There are some things about our hometowns that will always be beloved, though, and candy is one of them. Not the candy that you'd pick up from the drugstore, not your ordinary Snickers bar, but the elegant, thoughtful candy you'd get during the holidays, from a
real candy shop. As an
Ohio native, my husband loves
Malley's Chocolates. I've yet to try their filled chocolates, but I've had their
chocolate covered pretzels and
buckeyes, which are pretty great.
However, as a
California girl,
See's will always be my favorite. They're famous for their
Lollypops (yes, that's the actual spelling) in decadent flavors like
Cafe Latte and
Butterscotch (their seasonal Pumpkin Spice is amazing!) Folks also love their
Peppermint Twists. As for their filled chocolates, I love their renowned
Scotchmallow (a layer of honeyed marshmallow on top of caramel, covered in dark chocolate) and their
Raspberry Creams are divine.

Yes, See's is most definitely a fixture in California. I don't think I have really visited a local mom and pop shop for handmade candies just yet, but it sounds like something fun to do. I do like the hand-dipped gourmet candy/caramel/chocolate apples available at candy shops.
I dont think we have one where I live.
OMG MALLEY'S AND BUCKEYES! :D I'm an Ohio native and I always include a baggie of Buckeyes in care packages to friends!
Where is your hubby from? I'm in a town right next to Kent.
Hmm. As a NE Ohio girl, I obviously love my Buckeyes!
I also consider myself Slovak/Croatian, since that is what my family is. Croatians have a lovely brand called Kras, and can sometimes be found in import stores. They have both chocolate bars and creme-filled wafer cookies called Napolitanke. My fave chocolate from Kras is milk chocolate with puffed rice mixed in :)
@Marica0701@xanga - My husband is from a tiny town west of Cleveland. Those treats from Kras sound delicious, I'd love to try them!
See's is overrated. The chocolate flavor of those lollypops is so powdery and dry
