  • Shimazu Shaved Ice

I like to think about summer treats during the winter.

I think it's my inner-Californian clawing her way out and craving warmer weather while it gets colder here in New York.  And why not?  Summer snacks are reminders of sunny days and long vacations!

Shave ice is one of those things that I grew up with.  My dad and I would always go to Teri Hawaii, get shave ice, and sit on the curb eating our treats until it melted into a slush and stained our tongues.

But by far, the best shave ice I've ever had was in Hawaii, which stands to reason.  Shimazu's shave ice is sweet, soft, and the best on hot, humid days.  Their cones are also gigantic!

There are tons of different flavors, but my favorite's always been the rainbow kind.  Visit the Shimazu Store at their Yelp page and 330 N School St., Honolulu, HI.

Where's your favorite place to eat shave ice?

I have only ever been to the Hawaiian Shave Ice stand outside of my local Lowe's, but I really love it. My favorite flavor is the blue raspberry because it tastes like cotton candy. If i ever go to Hawaii i will have to go here!

Their shave ice are huge! I like their creme brulee flavor.  I still like Waiola best, as far as Oahu shave ice places.

That looks so good! They sort of remind me of the little shave ice cups that are sold from street carts in East Harlem in the summer time. I've never had either but now that I'm reading this I really want to try one. hehe

I have never eaten shaved ice. The ones I got were always rock solid and I couldn't even chip at them with a plastic utensil. I usually gave up and sucked out all the neon-colored high fructose corn syrup and chucked the colorless ice afro into the trash.

yum.  i never had one of those before.  but here in indonesia we have something similar.  not is a cone or cup, though.  instead, in a bowl.  cause underneath all that ice will be tons of goodies such as avocado, jackfruit, palm fruit, coconut, fermented casava, sweetened legumes n nuts, tapioca pearls, grass jelly, etc.  and on the topping, coconut milk and palm sugar syrup, as well as white and chocolate condensed milk.  yeah, we are citizens of hardcore sweet tooth nation.
