Since moving to the New York area four years ago, this place has become a staple both with my friends and when I want to take visitors out to a unique experience.
I first heard Panna II described as "That Indian food place with the lights." Which, as it turns out, is a pretty accurate description.
A quirky Indian restaurant nestled in the East Village, Panna II literally beckons you inside (they have people who stand outside and very emphatically ask you to come in. They're competing with the other three neighboring restaurants, also filled with lights) with flashing lights of every kind you can imagine. There's a lot of very strange decorations haphazardly stuck to the walls, creating a small and overwhelming space. But...in a good way!
Panna II is a default for my group of friends. We've been coming here for years and pretty much order our favorites each time. I usually get the chicken kurma - a cream sauce with almonds, raisins, and sweet spices. Their garlic naan is delicious as well.
While Panna II might not be the most authentic restaurant around, it sure has the most personality. If you're looking for a fun, out of the ordinary experience that isn't expensive, definitely visit Panna II! Learn more at their
Facebook page and their
website.

that place looks awesome!
It looks pretty cool! For a casual spot my friends would visit frequently, as long as the price is right and the food is tasty, authenticity is not a huge concern. My friends and like a restaurant/bar, Los Compadres (if you're ever in the Los Angeles area), especially on Fridays for Happy Hour. They have several drink options including micheladas, margaritas and even shots for $4 each, and happy hour eats at $5 each. The items on the regular menu are tasty, too. Inexpensive and consistent, not to mention super comforting.
