Prehistoric Man Ate Pandas, Scientists Say
Scientist Wei Guangbiao, head of the Institute of Three Gorges Paleoanthropology at a Chongqing museum, cites that prehistoric man ate pandas in the region that is now part of the city of Chongqing in southwest China.
Wei explains that many excavated panda fossils "showed that pandas were once slashed to death by man" and that "in primitive times, people wouldn't kill animals that were useless to them." This led to the deduction that pandas were used as a form of sustenance.
Wei also notes that pandas were smaller then and that wild pandas lived in Chongqing's high mountains 10,000 to 1 million years ago.
Currently, there are about 1,600 pandas in the wild and they are considered to be endangered due to poaching and development. There are 300 Pandas in captivity in China's breeding programs to ensure the survival of their national animal. What do you think of prehistoric humans consuming panda meat?

How could anyone eat a cute, innocent, fluffy panda? =C
But then again, I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way about chickens and goats and cows...
I'm happy that strong action is being taken to preserve the cuddly bear though =)
Sad, but understandable.
If a panda goes missing from the zoo; it wasn't me, I swear.
Lucky bastards...
I don't see why this is a big deal? Is it worse to eat a panda than a cow? Is one life more valuable than the other? Speciesism my friend.
The paleo diet is going to get really weird.
@jemenfouX@xanga - True story. Don't eat either. *high five*
Um, so? Prehistoric man ate everything to survive, but unlike us, they didn't farm species into extinction and destroy the planet for their own greed.
@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - Lol!
pretty sure pandas weren't endangered species in the prehistoric era...
Lol I think this is kind of common sense, though. Pandas are probably high in fat & calories, considering how much meat they have them. & I'm sure their coats made very warm jackets or blankets. I could see why they were hunted. Glad they're not anymore, though!
I am sure they ate whatever they could kill. It makes no difference to me.

and that's surprising?
Don't really care. When you're hungry, you eat what's around. If it came down to starving to death or eating my cats, I'd eat my cats.
@chronic_masticator@xanga - who the fuck cares what prehistoric man ate? scientifically, it's interesting knowledge. on a modern and real level, people are absolutely idiotic these days to worry about the morality of what man ate 40,000 years ago.
i guess ANY animal was considered as a food source back then. which is understandable. it's a rule of nature. one must eat to sustain life. knowing how china can consume bears, dogs, turtles, etc, panda was just another source of meat to them people. and there were probably plenty of them roaming around back then. if this happens TODAY, then i would be completely opposed to it.
Hopefully, in a hundred years or so, people will be talking about how savage and barbaric it was to eat cows, pigs, and chickens. It's a damn shame that it isn't that way now.
