  • Is Food Porn Making Us Fat?

I'm not going to lie, sometimes I like to go through pages of Food Gawker and Pinterest to look at the beautiful pictures of foods I'm not eating. But could that be making me fat? According to Dr.Oz, yes.

Recently, in Dr. Oz's food porn segment, the TV personality revealed, "Like the sexual kind of pornography, food porn whets your appetite in ways you have never imagined, allowing you to lust after the orgasm of the perfect bite." In the episode, Dr.Oz suggests that visuals or food and TV shows (like "MasterChef" and "Top Chef") makes a person created a "food porn fantasy" similar to when individuals recreate a sexual scene from pornography.

On the episode, Dr. Oz invited three respected food personalities -- Joe Bastianich, Gail Simmons and Amanda Simpson of Food Porn Daily -- on the show to discuss whether or not food porn is making us fat. Simpson countered Dr.Oz's assertion by revealing that she lost 110 pounds through diet and exercise while maintaining the Food Porn website and writing a cookbook.

And that's when Dr.Oz introduced Mona, a woman he believed was a "victim of food porn" as she claims to be addicted to food TV and blogs and allegedly gained 20 pounds in two years. It's important to note that she also recently opened up her own cupcake business.
I can understand the psychology that perhaps these blogs and shows make us hungrier or crave certain foods, but I don't think food porn can be blamed for weight gain. In my opinion, it comes down to will power. If you are so easily swayed from images and TV that you can't control how much or what you eat, then odds are you also can't resist temptation in the kitchen or at a grocery store.

What do you think? Is Dr.Oz right or out of line?
