  • Top 5 Candy Picks

Would you believe me if I said I had a 45 minute conversation with my boyfriend about the differences between candy, candy bars, and chocolate bars? If you did believe me, do you find us insane? Whatever you think, it happened, and we came to the conclusion that all three deserve a separate but equally delicious category in which we shared our top 5 from each.

Items in the candy category are defined as being in morsel form, so Good & Plenty would be considered a candy because it is in pieces, although not all candy is in this form. Candy will usually have no chocolate, but might be considered so if in morsel form, and is typically just made up of sugar, flavoring, and food coloring. According to the oh so reliable Wikipedia, candy is “a confection made from a concentrated solution of sugar in water, to which flavorings and colorants are added”.

In North America the term “candy” is a broad category that can include chocolate, “candied” fruit, marshmallows, and more. My boyfriend and I decided that marshmallows and candied fruit are not to be considered in our three categories, and that both are in another category we have not determined. Here are my top 5 CANDY picks:

    Skittles (original)

These will always be my favorite movie night candy. Skittles instantly perk me up when I am feeling down. My favorite flavors are grape and lime (I try to save those for last), what are yours?

    Mike and Ike

Another fruity movie favorite, Mike & Ike’s are my stepfather’s favorite candy, instantly turning him into a little boy again when he sees them at the grocery store cash wrap. They are so soft and chewy that they cannot be resisted.

    Peanut M & M’s

This took a few minutes to debate, but we decided that this is indeed a candy because it is very sweet chocolate coated in a candy shell. The same goes for regular M & M’s. Should there be a separate “chocolate candy” category?

    Candy corn

I may be one of the few who enjoy candy corn. It is best when fresh, of course. I could eat it all year round but usually stick to Halloween season.

    Reese’s Minis

I want you guys to decide this one. I think Reese’s minis are a candy because they are in morsel form, but it is true that they are made up of chocolate and peanut butter. Whether it is a candy or not, Reese’s are one of my top sweet treats.

What do you think of my 3 categories? What are your favorite candies?

Stay tuned for posts on candy bars and chocolate bars!
