My Top 5 Favorite Dim Sum
My parents are coming up this weekend, which means free food! Of course I'll be happy to see them, but it's nice to not have to pay for a meal, right?
There's a place called Dim Sum House about half an hour away from my school and whenever my parents visit, they always like to eat there. For those of you that don't know, dim sum is individual portions of Chinese food that's served on both small plates and in steamer baskets. We usually have dim sum for brunch and I'm definitely looking forward to all the delicious noms I'll be having. Here are my top 5 favorite dim sum:
1. Spring rolls
My favorite part is definitely the flaky crunchy outside. I especially like spring rolls that have bean threads in them.
2. Shrimp Rice Noodle Rolls

Gotta have soy sauce with a hint of sugar poured over them. So good!
3. Turnip Cakes

Every once in awhile, my mom will make these. They're best when they have a crisp crust on the outside from searing in the frying pan.
4. Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaves

This is good with soy sauce over it too. My sis and I fight over who gets the pork inside when my mom makes them.
5. Fried Rice Balls

I'm not sure if there's a better name for them, (I know what they're called in Chinese but I'm not even going to try to translate that to English) but despite the grease, I like fried rice balls a lot. The ones I've had are filled with a pork and mushroom mixture.
Have you ever tried dim sum? If so, what's your favorite?

My parents are coming up this weekend, which means free food! << So true! I had a fantastic Chinese dinner with them this week - for free!:P
I love dim dum! I enjoy the sticky rice, pork buns, any dumplings, and this shrimp ball thing with shredding something on it (no idea what it's called).
I love anything fried, I know it's so bad for me. I'm a sucker dumplings and sticky rice.
@Emma - there's a couple popular dumplings made with shrimp. There's one that has a white wrapper. The insides are shrimp and bamboo shoots. (Ha/ har gow based on Cantonese translation). The other one is a meat one often made with pork, mushroom and sometimes fish eggs (roe) on top. That one is called sui mai.
I miss having some of the best Chinese food on the west coast. That happens to be in the SF Bay Area. You're so fortunate to live so close to NYC Chinatown and Flushing :)
#5 - fried mochi filled with pork
yeah, I love Dim Sum and get it all the time here in NYC
Man, I got jipped! When my parents came and visited me it was more like, "we bothered to drive here, you take us out to eat!" :/
@Emma - ah yeah I really like the pork buns too!

I love the beef version of the steamed rice noodle rolls. My favorites also include seared chive dumplings, meatball, sesame rice ball with red bean, egg tart...
I want some NOW!
TURNIP CAAAAKE
Um...as someone with Asian background I just want to say that traditionally spring rolls are not supposed to be fried. They are supposed to be served cold in lightly steamed rice paper. They asian-american version of spring rolls is fried, but the thing you love so much about spring rolls hasn't actually anything to do with an authentic spring roll.
