  • Gadget Wishlist for My Future Kitchen

I am obsessed with kitchens. Some people might size up what someone is wearing, admiring them for their unique choice in blending a floral skirt with a leather jacket for contrast, but I admire people’s well-equipped kitchens. Whenever I go over to someone’s house I inspect their kitchen, whether they know it or not, for kitchen fantasticness. The dreamy look you get in your eye when looking at something appealing, like a crush or a big plate of food when you are hungry, is the look my eyes get when I am given a tour of somebody’s kitchen. Most recently, I was invited over one of my very good friend’s house for dinner and was completely enamored by their kitchen gadgets and setup. My friend’s mother had worked at Williams Sonoma and admitted that “there is no way I’d have all this stuff if it weren’t for the employee discount”. Right then and there I considered applying for a job at the kitchen gadget specialty store.

Not to brag, but my kitchen at home is pretty fabulous with a KitchenAid mixer, various silpats, a candy thermometer, a blender, and so on. I take advantage of the gadgets my family has acquired due to my mother’s love of food. I do not consider myself a chef or a baker, but rather a seasonal kitchen adventurist, meaning during my winter and summer breaks from school I manage to have extra time for kitchen experimentation. I wish I were able to improvise more, but perhaps I will get better at it the more I cook. My mother told me she didn’t have a clue when she was my age, and that I know how to cook and bake more than she did; now she can make just about everything.

I tell myself I will become a true self-taught cook once I have my own place, and therefore my own kitchen outfitted to my liking. Here are some kitchen gadgets that are at the top of my list:

    KitchenAid Mixer

I adore baking and I use this item most, finding any excuse to bake, so it is #1 on my list.

    Spice Rack

I love using spices, especially ones with a kick like cayenne and curry powder, so I could utilize something like this.

    Good set of knives

I would have to do some research on what kind/brand is best.

    Espresso Machine

My drink of choice is a quad espresso iced with nothing it; I am a coffee addict, enough said.

    Nonstick pans

I think every kitchen needs a few of these, no matter how little you cook.

    Dutch Oven

Making meat dishes and stewed cabbage in this is super easy. I’m sure if I had one of my own I’d find a bunch of other things to make in it.

    Blender

I blend up a lot of smoothies!

    Food Processor

I like making gluten-free treats which require grinding up nuts and dried fruit. I also like making salad dressing, so I could really use a big one.

I could spend hours and hours thinking up more things I want for my future kitchen, but I think I’ll wait until the time is actually here. Of course I want everything to be high quality. When I have my own place the room I look forward to “decorating” the most is the kitchen (but I’m sure you figured that out already).

What kitchen gadgets do you have/want in your kitchen?

I like your list, it is pretty practical.  I don't find much use for an espresso machine for me because I don't drink that much coffee and automatic drip is good enough for me.  I think for the most part I am pretty well stocked in the kitchen department, so I will have to say that the gadgets I want are more specialized.  I love shopping at kitchenware stores...I can go broke in one!

    1. fry/candy thermometer
    2. madeleine pan
    3. Vitamix blender
    4. New wooden cutting boards
    5. Baking station set up in my kitchen, preferably with a granite or marble counter top to roll out dough (and maybe fondant one day lol)
    6. Cake decorating stand
    7. Proper wok and suitable spatula
    8. Electric ice cream/frozen yogurt maker
    9. A minion/elf/fairy to clean my kitchen for me  Ok, that will probably never happen but it's fun to dream
    10. Label-making machine to make labels for all my food storage bins (such as for sugar, flour, etc)

Most of these are not necessary.  I am making do with what I own, but they would be nice to have.

i have most of those,  my fave is the kitchenaid. i <3 mine. i bake bread daily and it is a big help. may i also suggest a GREAT set of knives... my grandfather used to say "pay once, cry once" and he was right when it comes to knives... i spent over 200 bucks on a small set of knives and they are wonderful. the set that i got before them { from target or someplace like that} actually Broke while i was using them...

i want the knife rack that is a person... but im a little off like that.

@babybug329@xanga - Noo nothing is unnecessary in the kitchen! These are all useful items!

@Emma - I prefer ceramic pans to non-stick, none of the if you scratch it out come the toxins worry :P a paper towel holder is another really good  one, SO HANDY lol. Ceramic blade knives/ peelers are another godsend. Oh and a marble rolling pin for pastry dough and such, you can chill it in the fridge so that the butter in the dough doesn't melt.

@babybug329@xanga - I have silicone madeleine pans! they are amazing and so worth the buy. have you considered bamboo cutting boards? really durable and affordable

Maybe I should just submit a post about these things :P

@Emma - Okay, okay, all the gadgets have a particular use.  I just prefer not to waste any "kitchen real estate" to items that can only do one task (well, maybe except a cherry pitter.  It would be a pain to try to pit a bucket of them).

@Trueinnerbeauty@lovelyish - I am skeptical about the silicone bakeware, but since the openings on a madeleine pan are so shallow, it might be okay.  (I am concerned about spillage because the pans are flexible and soft.)  The heavy duty metal ones are so expensive...but maybe because I was looking at them at Williams-Sonoma.  I've seen bamboo boards, they look really durable.  I will definitely consider them when I need to replace the ones I have now.  (Inexpensive plastic ones from Ikea.  I know wooden ones are better but at the time, shoestring budget only allowed the plastic ones.)  You should definitely post about your dream items!

@babybug329@xanga - I don't know where you live, but if you have ever heard of "ThinkKitchen" they sell really thick strong silicone madeleine pans, and cheap cheap cutting boards lol.

@Trueinnerbeauty@lovelyish - http://www.thinkkitchen.ca/ <--is that the place?  I have never heard of it, but I don't think they operate in the US.  If I could shop at a store like that...oh man, I would need a kitchen twice the size of the one I have now!
