  • My Fav 5 Ice Cream Sundae Toppings

All this talk about new sundae toppings with Sohla's "Is America Ready for the Bacon Sundae?" post got me thinking about sundae toppings. I love ice cream sundaes. The possible toppings are endless. I like to stick to the same toppings with my sundaes, but you can mix it up and personalize your sundae made at home or at the right shop with enough topping options. Here are my Fav 5 ice cream sundae toppings.

    1. Whipped Cream
If there's no whipped cream, then it's not a complete sundae. You have to top the creation off with whipped cream. I enjoy the smooth and silky homemade whipped cream my sisters make, but the Reddi-Wip works fine too. If I'm having a sundae, I white-out the top of my sundae.

    2. Nuts
You can choose pecans, almonds, peanuts, wet walnuts, or practically any nut you think will bolster your sundae. I like pecans in a pecan mudslide or wet walnuts.

    3. Candy
I'm not one to take it over the top with candy toppers for a sundae, but occasionally I jump outside my comfort zone for either Snickers, Butterfinger, or Reese's Pieces ice cream toppings. Candy toppings do elevate an ice cream sundae to that heavenly level. It's just a little too sweet for me to have on every ice cream sundae.

    4. Cherries
I don't eat cherries on an ice cream sundae. I like them, but for some unknown reason I have a mental block and they don't fit into my picture of an ice cream sundae. But to mention ice cream sundaes without "the cherry on top" would be a sin.

    5. Caramel/Hot Fudge

Why are they grouped together? Because I eat them together on sundaes. Apart they are both delicious, but together they are simply amazing. When these warmed sundae relatives collaborate with sweet and cool ice cream, nuts, and whipped cream, it makes a perfect ice cream sundae.

The possibilities do not stop at these 5 toppings. You can add brownies, cookies, eat it out of a waffle bowl, and don't forget that you can choose any flavor of ice cream for the foundation. I'm a little tempted to throw hot bacon slices on my next ice cream sundae. Ice cream sundaes open minded for any creative eater.

What toppings do you like on an ice cream sundae?
