• 12 Year Old Restaurant Critic Is My Hero

  
  

  Apparently I am getting off to a very late start when it comes to my dream of becoming a food writer/restaurant critic. 12-Year-Old David Pines has already published his own restaurant guide, Pines Picks: Kid’s Guide to the Best Things to Eat and Drink in New York City. Pines started writing his guide when he noticed there wasn’t anything directing people about where to go for the best version of a specific food, like grilled cheese. In his book Pines reviews 100 types of food including lobster rolls and mozzarella sticks.
  
  

  I only started doing brief reviews of restaurants on Yelp when I was maybe 16; reading this article makes me feel like I was a lazy kid!  Pines’ restaurant reviews focus on the food, and he critiques adult foodie’s emphasis on atmosphere. He thinks the appearance of a restaurant and things of the like should not matter if the food is good. Pines denies that his parents wrote the book, saying that he learned to develop his writing skills and develop his vocabulary, which was not easy for a sixth grader.

  This kid has spunk and I kind of want to go out and buy this book after reading the article about him on Delish.com. He has an entrepreneurial spirit and a great knack for food and his audience, noticing what there is a market for. I like David because his reviews get to the point, zoning in on the food rather than getting bogged down by other elements like service. Yes, these things are important to the overall dining experience, but David’s viewpoint is fresh and beneficial to today’s foodie scene. Perhaps David Pines will be a restaurant critic for The New York Times or own his own restaurant when he grows up.
