Are you a health fanatic, but still like to go out for the occasional drink? I enjoy sports, food, and a good glass of wine or a nice beer. I love working up a sweat in the kitchen, on the playing field, and at the gym.
Even though exercising can be a rewarding private self-motivating experience, I also enjoy the social experience of a bar. I like going out for drinks to hang out with friends, catch up and talk, and I love being around lots of people having a good time. Does that make me partially a social drinker? Perhaps, yes. It never occurred to me that this social element of sharing conversation over drinks could be found at a gym.
According to the article, "
Uplift Studios: Open-Bar Gym Gets You Boozed and Buff" in the
Huffington Post,
Uplift Studios which is located in Manhattan, is a gym that combines exercise and alcohol with their "Raise the Bar" classes. The gym has programs such as "Cardio and Cocktails" and "Workout and Wine."
They are not suggesting you get trashed after a hard workout session. The gym discovered that having a glass of wine with other gym goers is a good opportunity for people to meet, socialize, and in many instances find new workout partners or friends. The atmosphere creates a better social environment at the gym. It's a way to appreciate two different elements, alcohol and exercise, together.
Initially, the idea of a bar in a gym seemed absurd to me. During and after a tough workout I like to hydrate and focus on drinking lots of water. But I love relaxing at the end of the day by having a couple beers or a glass of wine.
Why not have both? After a tough workout you can drink your water and sip on a glass of wine. There is no better reward after pushing yourself to the limit at the gym than a nice drink to help you relax. Alcohol, like the majority of food and drink, when used moderately, can be perfectly fine and in particular instances beneficial to your health.
I think Uplift Studios has stumbled upon brilliance with their creative and social exercise programs. For me, the one downfall is that Uplift Studios is a woman's fitness studio. A gym needs to start exercise classes that include something along the lines of basketball and beer or body building and beer for men.
Do you want your gym to have a bar?

Nothing with the occasional drink, but I don't think having a drink at the gym will yield an effective workout. Nor would I consider having one after working out seeing that I need to drive home. Dehydrated + cocktail = VERY BAD IDEA. Go home, shower, have a snack and a glass of wine.
maybe a smoothie bar...i always crave a smoothie after i workout...
Yup. A beer after a hard workout always sounds fantastic...
but it would unfortunately give all those guys with biceps bigger than their brains more of a chance to hit on us girls, so maybe I should rethink my answer. lol.No thanks.
I do want my gym to have a bar.
And by "gym" I mean our spare bedroom where we work out, and by "bar" I mean, barbells because dumbbells don't always cut it.
I would go to the gym every day! And then I would spend it at the bar.
No.
I wouldn't be into this, but it is a pretty cool concept.
I think it's a good concept but I personally like to seperate the two. When I drink it's to be social and less responsible than necesssary. When I work I do so to prepare for the latter lol. Also because I think it's the right thing to to do considering I enjoy my health and body build.
people are gonna get drunk and kill themselves on machines... and doesn't that defeat the purpose? drinks have calories, aren't you trying to LOSE them?
no, I want that baby seal in your profile picture.
Yesssss such a good idea, of course the social after and meeting like minded people, but I actually find workout a lot less of a chore with a few in me. Hahaha!
@babybug329@xanga - this is what i'm thinking too. after you burn all those calories you're kind of on E...why would you put alcohol on a dehydrated empty stomach? lol.
and drinking a beer right after working out is like eating a slice of cake right after working out...it defeats the purpose imo. a glass of wine isn't as bad at all as long as you only have one.
i think it's a dumb idea personally. not something i would want. beer is unwanted/unneeded calories so if you don't really care then go head and have a beer after your workouts lol.
@grizzlybearr@xanga - Other people can do what they want, but personally, if I put forth the effort to workout, I am not going to undo all that hard work with alcohol (or other calorie-heavy drink/food). It really makes no sense. The occasional drink is fine in my opinion. But, if someone needs a damn drink AT the gym, apparently weight/fitness isn't their main concern.
@babybug329@xanga - exactly! people who are serious about getting into shape wouldn't even want to go drink right after working out. i'm busting my ass to look good i'll be damned if i'm going to ruin it for a beer. next thing you know they'll be serving cake and desserts...eating right and drinking right (aka WATER) are vital if you want to have a nice body.
I want my everything to have bar.
No
Just thinking about the combination of drinking and working out makes me sick.
