Does Fast Food Make People Exercise More?
According to the Huffington Post, a study conducted by research group BIGInsight found that 34.3 percent of people 18 and up claimed to exercise on a regular basis. When the group asked customers at big fast food chains if they exercised regularly, this percentage was actually even higher.
Though the number may be higher, it may not necessarily be accurate. Individuals could have easily lied about their exercising habits in order to appear more fit than they really are (I know I probably would have felt tempted to), or as the article mentions, people may really feel compelled to exercise more because of the guilt from having eaten unhealthy foods.
BigInsight followed up with 8 big fast food chains and the percentages of people who claimed that they exercised regularly. Here are the results from the largest percentages of people who said they exercise to the smallest. Honestly, I can't say I'm too shocked over the results.
8. Subway- 49.1 percent
7. Chick-Fil-A- 46 percent
6.Arby's- 43.2 percent
5.Taco Bell- 40.3 percent
4.Wendy's- 40.2 percent
3.Burger King- 36 percent
2.KFC- 35.4 percent
1.McDonald's- 34.8 percent
What do you think of these results? Do you feel led to exercise more after eating fast food?

my money's on the fast-foodies lying to make themselves feel better about themselves
I feel a little unsure with these stats, but maybe it's true. Normally, the people I see who eat a lot of fast food aren't out their on a daily basis exercising. But I can see how guilt can be motivating. Then again, I would like to know the demographic of people from the stats. I remember back in high school when I played a lot of sports, my teammates and I used to hit up fast food places after practice for a quick burger or something.
The places on the list I frequent the most is Subway, followed by McDonalds (only occasionally). I don't feel there is any correlation between fast food consumers and increase in physical activity...because it certainly doesn't convince me to exercise more!
@billyeats - true. I never did sports but I was in marching band and we always stopped at fast food places. Honestly I think most people probably lied.
I think people who eat at fast food places know they are living an unhealthy lifestyle. Hopefully it will motivate them to make working out a regular part of their lives. Though people desire quick fixes instead of persevering and seeing dramatic lifestyle improvements. The people who actually work out for a long duration are true role models in my eyes. They are the ones who say this is possible and it can be done.
I exercise regardless.
Or people eat more fast food because of the fact that they exercise...
When I eat fast food, it's kind of like a reward for exercising regularly and keeping up with my studies. Then after I eat it I feel bad about myself enough to work out the next day. Cyclic behaviors!
People lie.
no!!
Does fast food make people lie more?
Just because the food has the word "fast" is in it, doesn't make it count as exercise.
IDK when I was super over weight I didn't exercise at all. After cutting fast food (I eat Subway sometimes) I felt amazing and haven 't touched anything from a burger joint like the ones listed in over 3 years. If anything I dropped weight and it inspired me to start working out.
I felt like crap when fast food was a huge part of my diet and it made me super sluggish. I remember I ate a few french fries from a popular joint on ONE occasion about 3 years ago after cutting fast food out and I was extremely ill. I didn't think I would get sick either and no, I'm not being dramatic. I felt sick to my stomach and lets just say I stayed in doors the next day.
I eat fast food daily because I like fast food. But I also exercise daily because I like exercise. I live with one rule: Do whatever the hell you want as long as it makes you happy. It just so happens a good habit and bad habit which counteract each other make me happy. Guess it's a matter of vice and virtue for me.
I'm going to go with 90% of the respondents lied! Ha ha ha!!!
sometimes i exercise sometimes i dont. doesnt depend on what i eat. i dont however, exercise when im PMSing. just dont feel like it
Subway is healthy though. i could see why this would be right because of the guilt. i know i feel guilt but i don't exercise, not that i don't want to. i just don't.
Good luck exercising after eating that though...
I think the respondents may have actually been telling the truth. If they were, their workouts just totally suck and do nothing.
Oh my god why is everyone acting like Fast Food is completely horrible? Having it once in a while isn't going to kill you, jeez >_<
We were allowed to go off campus for lunch at my high school and that basically correlates to fast food because we only had 20 minutes to eat and about 10 minutes to walk to our cars & drive each way. And you know what? Pretty much everyone was athletic and regularly went to the gym. I don't know why all of you want to jump the gun and say "Oh, they must be lying" as if it's impossible to treat yourself to something unhealthy occasionally. No one I know from high school has gained an exponential amount of weight and everyone still seems to eat exactly like they used too, if not more fast food because the college cafeteria food is gross.
Dumb study. Eating fast food negates all benefits reaped from exercise.

I don't eat fast food TOO often (ha ha relative term I guess), but when I do I get guilty and definitely have more motivation to work out.
Hah. It would take over an hour on a treadmill to burn off a 6" meatball melt. My guess is people who actually understand the mathematics of diet and exercise are there to eat the light options (which explains the Subway percentages, Subway is one of the few fast food places whose healthy options are actually healthy) or are the kind of people that think taking a walk round the block in the evening constitutes a proper exercise program.
I eat at those places with the higher percentage of exercises sometimes, in that exact order of percentage (minus chik fil-a because I don't live near one anymore) and I run quite a bit. It's funny because I never eat at the bottom three... So it's possible!
I exercise regularly, and I frequent McDonald's. My usual order at McDonald's is a salad and a diet Dr Pepper.
