  • Durian Feast, Geylang

Guess what we are having for dessert tonight? Nope. It's neither tiramisu nor ice kachang. Today, I shall bring you to the heart of Singapore's red light district, Geylang, for a mini durian feast! Are you ready to savor this thorny-husked king of tropical fruits? As our royal highness has such a distinctive, some call it overpoweringly repulsive, and smelly, we won't be allowed to bring it on any public transportation.

So we'll just have to enjoy it in the open air eating area by the road side. Quick! Roll up your sleeve, and come durian picking with me!

Did you know that the name Durian comes from the Malay word, "duri" for thorns? This native of Brunei, Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia, can grow up to 30cm long and 15cm in diameter. There are many grades of durians, the best being D24, Sultan and Mao Shan Wang, which, at US $10/kilogram, easily cost up to 10 times the average price of the cheapest grade available.

As 19th century British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace beautifully put it, the king's edible soft and creamy golden flesh was like "a rich custard highly flavored with almond".

Could you see that I could barely contain my excitement? It's been YEARS since I last had durians. I felt like a kid again that very instant.

    Yummmm! All licked clean!

I hope you had fun at our secret durian night. Don't hate me if the smell/taste drives you mad with disgust!

To get to the durian stalls, just jump into a taxi, tell the driver "Geylang durian area" and he'll whisk you to the royal grounds of our tropical fruit majesty in a blink.
