  • NYC Shop Review: Grom

Yesterday I needed a break from the stuffy heat in my apartment. I layered up, which is a huge deal for me and braced the 29 degree weather. I grabbed my newly purchased Canon T2i camera (my Christmas present to myself) and headed towards Central Park.

My parents came home from a recent trip to Italy. They have been ranting and raving about how delicious all the food was...I'm convinced they are just trying to make me jealous. One thing they couldn't stop talking about was how good the gelato was especially from this one shop called Grom. Well, on my walk to Central Park I just happened to come across the Broadway location.

I knew there was a location in NYC, but I had no idea where it was located nor did I research it, so I was pleasantly surprised when I stumbled upon it. After my walk in the park, I headed into Grom to attempt to warm myself up. Then I was like "How can I warm myself up with gelato?"

I looked at the menu noticing they had a winter special of hot chocolate, which looked so yummy. I ordered a large because I was freezing and it also wasn't massive so I knew I could finish it. I got asked by the employee behind the counter which flavor I wanted. I was confused. I answered back with hot chocolate and she asked me again.

Then I noticed that there were 3 different types: dark, milk or hazelnut. I chose the milk hot chocolate with whipped cream. The second I saw the employee pouring this drink into a metal container to be warmed up, I instantly knew this wasn't your ordinary hot chocolate. It looked like a melted chocolate bar, thick and creamy. I got fresh whipped cream, which was really cold and a nice balance with the hot beverage.

This was the sweetest hot chocolate I've ever had in my life. Did I mention it was $7? It was very good, but after the whipped cream disappeared, it was a little too sweet for me and I felt awkward asking for more whipped cream. I told my parents I was sitting at Grom and they got so jealous. My dad thought I was crazy for not ordering any gelato, but it was too cold outside and I wanted something comforting.

Anyway, next time I go back (now that I know it's super close to my apartment) I am definitely going to order gelato with the fresh whipped cream that I'm slightly obsessed with. After I try the gelato, I will report back with my opinion of the supposedly amazing quality.

Have you ever tried Grom? Was it good?
