  • Reunion Dinner at The Soup Restaurant

This year, we decided to have our Chinese New Year's Eve Reunion Dinner two days in advance as my mom had to work today. It was not entirely a bad idea as we managed to avoid crazy last minute diners, so all's good! Despite that, it was quite a challenge finding a restaurant that served Chinese New Year celebration dinners for two (instead of at least 6 to 10 people). A few moments of persistent googling, however, led me to the perfect solution, which was The Soup Restaurant's Spring Set Menu. Hope you're feeling hungry! ;)

Which Chinese New Year feast would you go for?

My lovely mom, in anticipation of the big meal ahead.

The famous Yu Sheng (a.k.a. Prosperity Toss and also the symbol of prosperity, abundance, luck and vigor),

which contains raw fish, shredded vegetables and other condiments and is put together in the following order.

To begin with, here's wishing everyone "Gong Xi Fa Cai" (Congratulations & may you prosper) and "Wan Shi Ru Yi" (May all your wishes come true). Now I wish you "Nian Nian You Yu" and throw in the fish which symbolizes abundance and excess through the year. Next I add in pomelo or lime, which represents luck, and wish you "Da Ji Da Li" (Good luck and all goes well) . I then add a dash of pepper to "Zhao Cai Jing Bao" (attract wealth and treasures) and pour in oil and mix well the dish to ensure the "wealth" (the ingredients) is well-circulated while wishing you "Yi Ben Wan Li" (multiple your profits by 10,000) and "Cai Yuan Guan Jin"(multiple sources of revenues).

Next I add carrot for "Hong Yun Dang Tou" (arrival of good luck), green radish for "Qing Chun Chang Zhu" (eternal youth) and white radish for "Feng Sheng Shui Qi" (career progress at a fast pace) and "Bu Bu Gao Sheng" (progress at every step). Lastly, I add the condiments, starting with peanuts for "Jin Yin Man Wu" (a household filled with gold and silver), then sesame seeds for "Sheng Yi Xing Long" (business prosperity) and ending with deep-fried pillow-shaped flour crisps for "Man Di Huang Jin(a floor full of gold). Looks like we are finally all set for the toss!

The higher one brings the ingredients above and away from the plate, the greater the auspicious value one rakes in for the new year ahead. Who'll be tonight's lucky winner? ;)

Soup restaurant's Samsui Chicken, which was incredibly juicy and succulent. With a touch of ginger and enveloped in fresh cabbage, the roll was simply one perfect match made in heaven.

Broccoli with scallops and mushrooms - all of my favorite ingredients.

Sweet lotus root soup with pork ribs. Who needs desserts anymore? ;)

Our happy and satisfied faces at the end of the feast.

Happy Chinese New Year and thank you for joining us! XOXO.
