Paula Deen has confirmed that she does indeed have Type 2 Diabetes. Apparently she was diagnosed 3 years ago and she just confessed this morning on the Today Show. She is also now working with a pharmaceutical team and drugmaker Novo Nordisk to help bring awareness to Type 2 diabetes. They are launching a program to help people live with it and to help promote the Novo drug for Type 2 diabetes.
"Although she had initially thought, when she got her diagnosis in 2008, that she would be forced to change her entire life and diet. But she soon figured out how to rectify her passion, food, with her new status. It's all about moderation, she says. "You don't want to make a steady diet of just lettuce," she told the newspaper. "You don't want to make a steady diet of fried chicken.""
I am not at all surprised about her health problems given the types of dishes she cooks on her show. While I love her sassy attitude and I've made several of her dishes with great results, they were only treats for holidays and other special occasions. I cannot imagine eating her signature dishes all the time. There is too much, butter, sugar, sour cream, cream cheese and sour cream.
I love Paula Deen. I watch her cooking videos on the web almost every day.
now when she needs to add sugar to her food all she'll have to do is add a few drops of her blood
@blonde_apocalypse@xanga - Yeah, but being overweight increases the likelihood of experiencing certain risks posed by diabetes. Losing weight makes it easier to stabilize blood sugar, which gives diabetics more control over their health. So she should cut the sugar AND the butter.
anytime someone cooks with a whole stick of real butter...sighs... im in lust.... : ).......
@blonde_apocalypse@xanga - You're partially right. With diabetes you can't metabolize most foods well.
Anyway, no, this doesn't surprise me. A lot of people from the South, like Paula, are encouraged to eat poorly, and they have shitloads of fast-food restaurants-----much more than, say, the East Coast or Midwest, where I live. The last time I visited family down there, they were shocked that I wouldn't have any greens (nasty), chitterlings (pig intestines?! EW!), and insisted on keeping it as healthy as I could. Then they said "I wish I could be eatin' healthy like you do!" while they took their health medications and roasted in the sun, drinking beer and soda.
I have never liked good old Paula, but I wish her well, and I really do hope she does make some significant changes.
@DrTryHarder@xanga - True, then how come skinny people get Type 2 diabetes as well?
Actually, failure of the pancreas "causes diabetes", as my 90 pound, five foot ten SIL found out. She went blind for several weeks, and it took them a while to realize that her blood sugar was in the 500's.
So for all you geniuses who believe that thin will protect you, wrong. You might try choosing better parents though...it also has a genetic factor.
I don't believe that she got this JUST because she is overweight. There are PLENTY of skinny people who have diabetes 2, such as Halle Berry. She has kept this a secret this long, & still continues to eat the way she does in moderation, so why are we making this such a big deal? It's her health, not ours.
I love Paula Deen, so although she does cook unhealthy food, & does eat that way, it still does surprise me that she is diabetic. But it doesn't change my opinion of her.
oh no! poor Paula Deen. I hope she gets better...
@millionofstars@xanga - They probably have Type 1, in which case they were born with it.
@x_damaged_yet_unbroken_x@xanga - An exboyfriend I had from the south for a while came and visited me and told me how gross he felt because I "ate so healthy". At the time, I would drink a Fuze with my breakfast of a granola bar, an oatmeal bar, and a bowl of Crispix. Instead of drinking soda, I was drinking water and orange juice throughout the day. But dinner at the time was still greasy hamburgers and mexican food.
@NeedsMore_ButterYall@xanga - Because the media needs a story and because some of her fans might be surprised, that's all. *shrug*
Paula only received her diabetes 2 diagnosis 3 years ago. From what I have read and seen, people often are in the prediabetic phase for years before the diabetes 2 kicks in. So, really her body has been going through the pains of her lifestyle for years longer. She probably has felt like shit for a long time and probably has had the infamous 'Obesity Limp' going for a while. I thought that she was 75 to 77 but apparently she is 64. Her body and face scream 'senior assisted living facility'. Does she use the Electric Cart at Wallmart yet?
I read that she is only revealing her condition now because she is about to represent a diabetes drug companie's medicine and make a sizeable chuck of cash. So, here she is knowing that she has trashed her body with her lifestyle, but then she keeps selling her lifestyle to the American masses for 3 more years.
Paula Deen is a business success in many ways. She sells shit food to the masses with that, just good people, southern hospitality feel and America eats it up and makes her money. When you look at the results in her body and face, she is a spectacular failure. A shining example of what happens when a person laughs at the laws of biology and nature.
But she is laughing to the bank so I doubt that she cares about how she trashed herself getting there.
No. It's not a surprise at all. She eats a pound of butter with every meal.
I believe that she got this JUST because she is overweight.
it's people from all over. "Fast food" is killing America.. and it's not something new. Hence the term "fast food". Because it's quick and easy and convenient. NOT good for you. There are fast food places all over the country.. including restaurants that strive to cook southern meals.. because people LOVE that kind of food. My family cooks southern food because they're from the south.. but no one in my family is unhealthy, obese, or has diabetes.
I have been reading how diabetes can be reversed with lifestyle change; exercise and eating habits. That's what I'd like to see her promote. I hate that she is a spokesperson for a pharmaceutical company.
I think she's got the most adorable personality (and her hair is beautiful), but her food scares me a little.
About Me: I love everything about food! I try my hardest to venture to try new foods and new places. I also have an affinity for craft beer and even went to the Great American Beer Festival for my honeymoon. I run, write, drink, and eat my way through New York City.

She had it coming. Looks like irony bit her right in the ass
I don't know why this comes as a surprise to anyone... HAVE YOU EVER SEEN HER SHOW?!?!
Diabetes is an inability to metabolize carbohydrates well. Butter has no carbs.
@blonde_apocalypse@xanga - I agree.

@blonde_apocalypse@xanga - Watch the BMI. Being obese causes Diabetes.

I was kind of confused about the sentiment.
Not all skinny people are healthy.
