  • Truck Dogs: Newark, NJ

Nestled in Newark, NJ is a food truck. This probably isn't surprising, given the recent surge in popularity these dining establishments have garnered. What's unique about Tony's Hot Dogs is that this truck has been serving hot dogs since 1968, and it is still one of the most popular lunch destinations in the area.

With over 40 years of experience, Tony's does not rely on anything but a good product and word of mouth. Yesterday, I made a visit with my sisters and my father, and despite a light snow falling, there was a constant line outside the truck. The hot dogs are classic "dirty water dogs" and the regulars wouldn't have it any other way. Toppings include sauerkraut, onions (both hot and sweet), and chili.

I, personally, do not like hot dogs, so I choose to get a "not dog," which is just a bun with all the good toppings but none of the meat. There is no seating around the truck, so most people eat in their cars or in the bordering Branch Brook Park. Be warned, however, that your car will smell pretty awful for days after bringing the hot dogs in! The prices are great, too. You can get a hot dog with "the works" for only $1.75!

If you're in the mood for a little slice of tradition served with a pretty delicious lunch, Tony's Specialized Hot Dogs is the place to go.
