  • Long Island Restaurant Review: Uncle Bacala's

This past weekend my sister and brother turned 24, so to celebrate we went to dinner at Uncle Bacala's new location in Smithtown, Long Island. My parents have gone to Uncle Bacala's first location, which is in Garden City and loved the food so we gave it a go.

We sat at a bar as we waited for our other guests to arrive...and everyone wanted to drink. The drink menu had unique choices, which are always fun. My mom got a coconut cosmopolitan that was rimmed with honey and toasted coconut. The bartender was super nice (hey Doug) and chatted with us about sports, food and random things.

We started off with the usual appetizers like baked clams and fried calamari. I got a spinach salad with walnuts, beets and goat cheese that was almost fried. It was so good. I would have liked the salad to be tossed a little bit more because none of the ingredients were mixed in. Instead, they were all placed on the sides of the plate and the spinach was like a mountain in the middle. But it was still really good.

I wasn't particularly in the mood for pasta or seafood, so I decided to get the filet mignon...yes, I ordered filet mignon in an Italian restaurant. It was cooked perfectly and had an amazing cognac-gorgonzola sauce drizzled on top with mushrooms. The filet mignon came on a bed of roasted potatoes and spinach. The combo of everything on my plate was so good, and I wanted to eat it all but I had to save room for dessert.

For dessert I ordered the apple crumble tart. I never order any sort of pie-type foods, but I had some weird craving for it that night. Oh my goodness. This apple crumble was so good. It wasn't packed with apples, which I loved and it tasted so fresh and delicious. It was paired with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream. Uncle Bacala's also spins their own cotton candy! It was a cute touch and the cotton candy was really good. We also got the waffellini, which is a Belgium waffle with bananas, homemade caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream.

Needless to say, I was in a food coma afterward. The whole meal was really good and I would definitely go back. I also liked it because it was a low key kind of restaurant and everyone was so nice and helpful. Definitely check out Uncle Bacala's if you live on Long Island and love Italian food like me!

Have you ever been to Uncle Bacala's? What's your favorite Italian dish?
