Diner Dash
I live in the state that is affectionately called the Diner Capital of the World. That's right, it's New Jersey. Home to the shore, the classiest housewives this side of the Mississippi, and a truck load of diners. A yelp search of my area yielded well over fifty diners within a ten mile radius. What is the fascination with these establishments? As someone who not only grew up in a town that had two diners of our own, but who works in one now while I'm at school, I was determined to find out.
Diners in the Garden State were already a discussion topic on IRLF, way back in 2009. Affordability, versatility, and convenience all made the list in terms of America's fascination with diners. Those were also components that I considered when thinking about the diner obsession.
I think another big factor is predictability. I don't know much about diners outside of this state, but I'd imagine they all offer a similar menu, perhaps with a few signature dishes. For instance, the diner where I work has all the usual diner fare (pancakes, tuna melt, burgers) but we also serve a really awesome shrimp po'boy.
Some of my favorite staples I'm counting on being on the menu when I go to a diner:
Chocolate Chip Pancakes
At my diner, we serve Red Velvet Pancakes. Those are pretty delectable. And super fun to look at!
Turkey club (with French Fries and a pickle, of course)

Rice Pudding

I get made fun of for loving rice pudding! I think it's so delicious. So what if it's "for old people"?
What are your go-to diner foods? Are you likely to try something you've never tried before if you eat at a diner or do you stick to staples?

very informative and well-written and PERFECT article
At diners, I like breakfast items like pancakes and omelets. Or grilled cheese sandwich. Simple things. I like rice pudding, but the Mexican counterpart, arroz con leche. But I'm not "old."
I wish we had diners here! They seem affordable with great food and atmosphere! I'd definitely have a regular of my own if they were a thing here.
Its not so much the food that attracks me to diners, but the servers. Very attentive especially come breakfast time. They refill your coffee without you asking. Where in other well known places that I've been to, they usually bring you the coffee, lets say, before the scrambled eggs and by then, you drank your coffee and its a mission to get a refill.
What I love most about diners is that chill, old school vibe. You can sit in the diner for a couple hours with a friend or group of friends, and the waitresses are cool with it. Also, I like how if you visit a diner often, you and the staff end up on a first name basis... and they probably know your usual. You don't get that kind of feeling in most restaurants.
Whenever I go to a diner, I often gravitate towards breakfast food! I don't know what it is about diners that does this to me, but it happens every time. I like to test out the home fries when I go to a restaurant. I admit that I am quite partial to Denny's, but I've been to other diners also.

I too live in New Jersey, and my friends and I LOVE our local diner. When I was a kid, I used to love going there and ordering off the kids menu - all the dishes are named after Disney characters. My favorite was always the Donald Duck, which is basically a mini Thanksgiving dinner - turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, gravy. When I got older, I joined my high school Marching Band and we were in there constantly after football games and our competitions. I was also there constantly with my non band friends. Now, whenever my friends and I go clubbing, after the club closes at 2 am we drag our drunk asses over to the diner to scarf down all kinds of yummy, greasy, fried food. lol. I have great memories of that place from childhood, adolescence, and adulthood.
Specific dishes....as far as breakfast goes, my diner has a pizza omelet that I love, streusel toast, and incredibly strong coffee. I like the wraps too, my favorite would have to be the barbeque chicken bacon cheddar wrap (soooo appealing and delicious, especially when you're drunk!). They also have a bunch of sandwiches that imitate the famous "fat sandwiches" at the Rutgers grease trucks - they're not quite as good as the grease trucks but I like them. And of course, since we are in Jersey, there are several items which contain pork roll! lol. I could go on, but you get my point, I <3 my local diner!
