Garbages Were Put in Starbucks for a Reason
I'm currently sitting in my local Starbucks writing my posts as I stare out the big glass window people watching (one of my guilty pleasures). When I first arrived, I had to clear a little space at the bar because there was a crumpled up bag and a used cup in my area.
As I continued to write, I noticed more and more people who just leave their empty, used cups on the bar. I know people in New York are always in a rush and everything, but is it that difficult for you to throw out a cup? Not only is it rude to the employees to leave your garbage for them to clean up, but it's just gross.
I don't want to be cleaning up your dirty, used cups because you didn't see the need to throw them away. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm not the biggest fan of picking up germ-filled cups and moving them away/throwing them out. Hey, you never know where people's hands have been (especially in NYC), so who knows what could be left on those things.

I took these pictures on my phone to show the accumulating amount of cups on the bar as I sat here. I actually never noticed until recently that people leave their empty cups behind. I have witnessed this on more than one occasion and I think it's kind of disrespectful to Starbucks and their employees. No one wants to clean up your garbage, so just throw it away on your way out the door.
Just a side-note: the pictures above were just a few of the cups left behind. By the time I left there were more that were abandoned by their coffee drinker. In my opinion, Starbucks is by no means a restaurant with waiters/waitresses, so they don't have the responsibility to clean up after you. In all the Starbucks cafes I have been to, employees are required to take your order, ring you up, make your Venti Non-Fat Iced Pike...and that's it.
Does anyone else find this to be annoying/rude?

i find it extremely rude.
not only in starbucks or any coffee shop but in food courts as well.i mean i am not your mother or anyone or yours, i don't need to clean up after you.i understand that in some places, there are cleaning people to do those things, but out of respect, clean up after yourself.
I hear ya! People who don't return shopping carts make me crazy, as well.
Seriously, how much energy does it take to get up from your seat to throw out the trash? People are so lazy.
quite rude
I rarely ever see people leaving their trash out on tables at my local Starbucks (but then again I rarely ever visit Starbucks). However, I do find it annoying that someone would just leave their cup, it's not hard to pick it up and drop it in the trash can that is so conveniently placed near the door on the way out.
People think because someone is behind the bar that eventually they will come out and clean the mess. Which will happen, but not fast enough for patrons who are ready to seat at a specific table or chair. It is gross and rude but if I'm determined to sit at the messy table and not the clean one then I can go out of the way to throw away those cups.
Must be a New York thing. Honestly, I've never seen that happen in Texas, but I know I've seen it happen up north.
Many people are lazy. They want others to wait on them!
Bleh. Americans.
@LightBlue21@xanga - From what I can tell by the comments so far, and from my own experience, NYC seems to have the problem with this...New York City, a very *international* city. Much more diversity than my town in Tx where this doesn't occur. Just an observation.
petes ftw
I think it just depends on the neighborhood you're in. My home starbucks definitely don't have this problem.
I work at a Kroger that has a Starbucks inside it. It's amazing the amount of Starbucks trash I find a day. In carts, on shelves, at the customer service counter, uscan, etc. It's ridiculous. People are rude. >_<
@LightBlue21@xanga - Is that really necessary? This happens where I live too, in Japan.
i've never seen that happen in south c!
@LightBlue21@xanga - to me, you're just as rude as the people leaving the trash. like americans are really the only ones who leave trash around. psh. pleeeaaasssse.
@LightBlue21@xanga - it happened where i lived in thailand, happened where i lived in japan and happened where i lived in england. your comment is prejudiced and stupid. lol
I feel the same way. I'm mean.. Really? Are you really that Ffn lazy and rude that you can't pick up your own trash and throw it out, when there's probably a trashbin on your way out?! Wth! I get really pissed and annoyed when I see it!
It is really rude, but at my local Starbucks (I live in England), you get the proper mugs if you're drinking "in", as well as proper plates and such, and you're expected to leave your stuff on the tables for the baristas to clean up, because they take it all out back to be washed and cleaned.
I live in NC and I hardly see this where I frequent. If I do see this, I would roll my eyes. It's just common sense to clean up after yourself.
I generally don't put any stock into stereotypes, but I can't help but notice that lots of folks are saying that it's a New York thing. I've never seen it here in Austin- I'd be interested to see, city by city, which areas tend to have ruder customers.
Man, that's irritating. I don't understand why people are so rude and lazy, honestly. I mean, how much energy does it take to toss your cup into the garbage can -- the one you're passing on your way out of the store, anyway?! I feel the same way about not putting your cart into the cart return instead of leaving it in a random parking spot so it can roll into someone's car door. It's rude, lazy, and a bit selfish.
Ugh.
this happens a lot where i work ( a starbucks in vail, co) and we see a lot of international guests because we are a resort town. i have seen people of all races or whatever do this, but have seen it the most from really big rich families from mexico city that literally put 3 tables together and then just get up, leave them there, piled with all the food and drinks they bought, croissant crumbs for days, and hot chocolate smeared on the floor everywhere. whatever though ... i dont mind cleaning it up. its like .. my job. and when we are staffed properly there should be no issue with sending someone out there to clean it from behind the bar.
but at the same time when we have a line to the door for 4 hours straight and are limited with employees then it could be an issue. but as someone who has worked in restaurants/cafes since i was 16, if the restaraunt or cafe is not staffing correctly that there is no person that can go and clean the bathrooms, lobby, guest area, tables, patio, or whatever WHENEVER it needs to be cleaned, they should staff another person for the shift so that they can have this covered.
From comments, I guess southerns are just more polite. Makes sense. But yeah, that is rude and lazy, and is a real shame.
@LightBlue21@xanga - The students I went with at American University of Cairo left their food trash everywhere. And I seriously doubt it was done by only the small American student minority.
I go to starbucks daily (but i'm in Texas) and I have never seen anyone leave their cups!
