Drink Review: V8 Original Juice
Last week I wrote a post asking readers what their opinions of V8 Juice was, which you can see here. The reason I asked was because I feel like I haven't been getting my proper servings of veggies lately, so I wanted to see if there was an easier and more efficient way of getting the right amount of servings.
I went grocery shopping on Sunday and I headed right for the juice aisle. I wanted to try V8 for myself to see if I liked it or not, so I bought a medium sized bottle since there were no tiny ones. I actually thought it was going to be a lot more expensive than it was, so I was slightly happy about that just in case I didn't like the flavor.
After reading the comments from readers, most of them being negative, I was a little reluctant to try V8 Juice. Most people said it tasted like cold tomato soup, it's too salty and it's just plain gross. I waited until the next day to try it because I wanted it to spend a night in the refrigerator because it doesn't seem like it wouldn't be good at room temperature.
I poured a little bit in a glass and the first thing I did was put it up to my nose to see what it smelt like. It smelt like tomatoes, which wasn't bad to me. I took a sip and it I didn't think it was horrible. I mean it wasn't the best juice I've ever tasted but I was expecting it to be a lot worse. It honestly did taste like cold tomato soup and it left a slight odd aftertaste.
I think I will just chug a glass of V8 Juice every morning. I drank it pretty easily...it wasn't like cough syrup after all. Maybe next time I will try V8 Splash, which is supposedly supposed to be a lot better than the original flavor. Thank you to all the readers who gave me your opinions!
Have you ever had V8 Splash?

I love V8 juice. its healthy and not sugary at all. which is exactly what people need healthy organic.
but its really expensive in my opinion. they are selling it 3.25$ a can at my school.
so I decide to just press my own veggies to make my own V8 juice. cheaper & definitely more healthy.
If you're going for nutritional value, get V-Fusion. V8 Splash is sweetened with corn syrup or artificial sweeteners, but V-Fusion is made with 100% juice. It tastes great too!
@shpadoinkle12@xanga - Good to know!
@prettykay04@xanga - I got a medium sized bottle for $3.79! Wow, that's so much to charge for one can :(
I've tried both regular V8 and V8 Splash...the V8 wasn't very tasty, like the other posters, tasted like cold tomato soup. The V8 Splash tasted much better but it did have more sugar than necessary to be considered a healthy alternative to actually eating fruits and vegetables. I suspect juicing your own would definitely taste much better because you control the ingredients that go in. (Without all the salt and preservatives.) Ugh, saw the Vitamix blender in the fall at a local fair, so want one to make juice! The problem is that they start at $500.
My fav is the spicy V8, I could drink that all day :)
I started drinking these everyday, one of the small cans, and they gave me bad heartburn due to the acidic tomatoes. Just be careful with that and you'll be okay. I love the OG V8. I also love tomatoes, but don't like tomato soup. Go figure.
I LOVE V8 juice.
I don't like the low sodium ones, though. Those ones DO taste like nasty tomato soup.two thoughts. get the spicy if you like spicy foods, it's really good. also, try an 8 oz glass after 2-3 minutes in the microwave. just like tomato soup.
I like the V8 Fusion better, although I guess the original would go nicely with a hot grilled cheese sandwich.
@shpadoinkle12@xanga - v-fusion is sooooo delicious :)
I love V8. I've always loved it. I think it's delicious and when I'm in my health moods it's my go-to lunch.
V8 splash knocks my socks off, probably because of the sugar it contains. V8 original is gross. Why the aversion to vegetables? My boyfriend also won't eat veggies or fruits. I have to sneak veggies into stir fried rice so he'll eat them. Veggies are great, I don't get it...
I'm going to have to agree with others about V-Fusion rather than V8 Splash. I've actually never tried V8 Splash, but it's full of sugar, sodium, and other additives that probably negate any health benefits. V-Fusion is all juice. You do get more sugar than regular V8 juice due to the fruit, but it's not as much as V8 Splash, and you get additional nutritional benefits. Plus, it tastes much better than regular V8. I hate veggies, and V8 juice made me want to vomit, but I love nearly every variety of V-Fusion. My favorite flavors are Acai Mixed Berry and Concord Grape Raspberry.
V-8 fan here! :D I'm like the consensus though; its cold and gross and salty (I cant stand cold soup). To get past that, I drink Low-Sodium V-8 and at room temperature. Believe you me, its tastes alot better! If you're wanting to get your daily value of veggies and fruit, I recommend Naked too; try the one with the red potatoes (very good). All natural and no extra sugar added (a bit spendy, but worth it)
I like V8 Fusion because it has pomegranite and blueberry -- much more appealing than tomato!
lol, you know, food isn't ALL about whether you like it. Sometimes you should eat something for the nutrients. Of course V-8 splash is going to taste better. It has SUGAR. duh.
I happen to love regular V-8 and have been drinking it since I was about 6 years old.
I usually don't comment on things but I just had to say something on this one. When I was growing up, my parents didn't just feed me what I liked, they told me it's important to eat such-and-such because it contains certain vitamins, etc. Yes I still prefer sugary things, but at least I am willing, as an adult, to eat just about anything if I know my body needs it.
Go with Fusion instead of Splash - better nutrition and taste. I liked the hot and spicy V8 as well -though I would much prefer to eat my vegetables rather than imbibing them.
@daavidd@xanga - Mmm yess I'm literally drinking warmed up spicy V8 right now. :)
V8 Juice is LOADED with salt and that's the reason why I don't drink it very often, and the low-salt (or no salt added formula) is bland, bland, bland. I also didn't really care for the V8 Fusion, but would choose that one out of all of them because it's not very high in salt and it sort of tastes like typical fruit juice.
I don't like V8 splash or fusion; however, I love the spicy V8. While I'm aware that it has quite a bit of sodium, I tend to not worry too much about that, as I feel that I run enough that that salt goes to good use :)
