  • Energy Drinks Lead to Hospitalizations

Let me start by saying I absolutely hate (with a passion) any type of energy drink. The smell of them alone makes my stomach turn...and the taste, don't even get me started. I just think energy drinks are gross and I don't understand why people drink them like it's water. I know many people who drink energy drinks with alcohol, which is definitely not good for you.

So when I saw this article by The Huffington Post, I wasn't exactly surprised. The article states that there was a tenfold increase in energy drink related hospitalizations between 2005 and 2009.

The study conducted did not include alcoholic energy drinks, like Four Loko, but 44 percent of the hospitalizations included an addition of drugs or alcohol. However, many of the cases did not involve alcohol, which means the energy drinks may be dangerous themselves.

Do you drink energy drinks? What do you think of the increase of hospitalizations?

um did the study happen to mention how many energy drinks were consumed? of COURSE you're gonna go to the hospital if you're drinking them like water. too much of any caffeine is bad for you. one energy drink once and a while is not going to land you in the ER

  • PorcelainDoll_xo@xanga

I like energy drinks. That's fine if you don't. Don't drink them.

Personally the only time it hurts me if is i'm stressed/currently because of my heart. But I don't.yeah there bad for you, But that goes with out saying to any drink that might be high in sugar/caffeine.
Also if you only drink them once in a while they really aren't that bad. =/
  • rosertot_love@xanga

I can't drink them because they do nasty things to my blood sugar. I'm really not surprised to hear about the hospitalizations though.

I drink 2 cans of Monster a day when I don't have time to make/get two cups of coffee. I really don't see an issue, it's just like drinking coffee to me just more convenient in the early morning.
  • maybmaybnot@xanga

lol threaten people's right to energy drinks or caffeine, and they won't even listen, and they may even get a bit snippy. lol. I don't drink energy drinks. I'm not surprised by the hospitilizations.

  • dinhtrinh@xanga

Before Red Bull. Now I drink Samurai. Very refreshing, tasts good, feel more energized.

  • bbanmen420@xanga

Well technically too much of anything is bad. I personally dont like them too much. I can never drink a full one If I do. Just tastes weird imo@armsraceofsound@xanga - 2 a day probably doesnt do anything, I see people drinking it like pop :| (I know pop isnt good for people either, but people do drink alot of it!)

  • mr_jin_tonic@xanga

Fucking retarded, anything that you consume too much of will lead to hospitalizations...even water.

  • starcrossedloversdivine@xanga

Lol replace "energy drinks" with "alcohol" and see how fast people turn on you... even worse.

  • beesuze@xanga

I have no use for energy drinks.  A cup of coffee is all I need in the morning.  A few bottles of water wake me up in the afternoon.  Even when I was in college and working 3 jobs (and averaged 5 hours of sleep a night) I used the same formula (bottled water wasn't big then, but a cup of water in the dining hall was always free - and I was always poor).

When I was teaching, I challenged my students to try drinking more water in the afternoon to see if it affected their energy levels.  Most of them were pleasantly surprised to find that swapping their afternoon caffeine habit for plain water resulted in the same energy levels with the added benefit of being able to go to sleep easier when bedtime rolled around.

  • FallingSafely@xanga

Yea this whole energy drink craze. I don't really understand it. They are so terrible for you... I don't really understand how people can purposely do that much harm to their bodies and not care. I mean I guess it's like anything else, alcohol, food, cigarettes. But it just stumps me, I guess.

On the other hand I knew about this. Only because I know a lot of people who work in hospitals. My one friend said that there was one time these kids bought like 25 energy drinks and drank them all. Their heart rates were like 180 and they were running around the ER like they were on speed overdose. The store that sold them actually got reprimanded for selling that many to children.

  • FallingSafely@xanga

@MyFaire@xanga - I don't really see anywhere in this, where she's reprimanding or judging those who drink energy drinks. I wouldn't get offended. She was just stating an opinion. Everyone has them.

  • FallingSafely@xanga

@maybmaybnot@xanga - I think that's because people actually feel guilty over drinking them. Anything where people get offensive easily, it's usually because of guilt on their part, underlying guilt.

  • Scarlet_Lipsticks@xanga

Energy drink isn't like the usual soda. If people start drinking it like water and consume a lot in a short amount of time, plus they mix it up with alcoholic drinks, I'm not at all surprise they ended up in hospitals.

  • purpleranger

I've tried a couple of energy drinks.  I would rather drink coffee or Coca-Cola.

  • written_conversations@xanga

lol, too much water will kill you too.

  • articulate_silence@xanga

I drink Red Bull occasionally, especially when I gotta make the long drive home from school about once a month. I think they are a really good example of "everything in moderation". Nothing wrong with an energy kick, but they are pretty bad for you if you over do it.

  • pain2beauty@xanga

I don't drink them often cause I'm caffeine sensitive and they wire me up and make my heart pound. I don't think they're good for you... but if you know you can drink them safely then thats fine.

  • goodeatings

I've drank Red Bull a few times and it actually tastes pretty good, but I hear a lot of bad feedback about energy drinks. I know people that drink energy drinks like it's nothing, and I think that they're not aware of the side affects of it. I've stopped drinking energy drinks.

  • DontTurnAway@xanga

This is outrageous! Ban all energy drinks because of the stupidity of humans!

  • hazywaters@xanga

I also hate them with a passion. They taste like cough syrup to me, i can't understand why people enjoy them. Personally i don't think their healthy, but I don't think one can will lead to hospitalization, unless mixed with alcohol or drugs- in which case, its the persons own fault. So i don't think they should be banned- however, i do wonder about the effects on younger kids or teenagers.

  • TomTea@datingish

Yes, I drink energy drinks and religiously but never exceeding three 16oz cans a day. The hospitalization of those people are a pity but the fault does not lie with the energy drink. The fault lies on the person who chooses to drink them "like water." If a person is unable to control their own impulses, then it's their own fault for getting hospitalized.

  • shondadiane@xanga

every once in a while I will drink one...but that's only when I have a long day at work...

those hospitalizations come from people that drink them too much one after the other...

there was one time I had 2 in a row--but I was wired afterwards, and I will never do that again...

the most caffeine I really get now is a Mocha Frappuchino from Starbucks (but in the small bottles at the grocery store)

  • the_rocking_of_socks@xanga

Consuming energy drinks like water can land you in a hospital?  No way!

Consuming too much of ANYTHING can hospitalize you.  Even water.
  • CandiedLilac@xanga

The stuff in energy drinks is not much worse for you than the shit in the processed food you eat everyday. I think people get hospitalized for either drinking too many of them, or their body in particular not handling it well. It's not really the kind of thing where the more you do it, the higher your risks are, like smoking.
