  • Not So Normal Cupcake Flavors

As mentioned in a few of my previous posts like this one, I am a cupcake lover! I love everything about cupcakes from making them to decorating them to devouring them...well ok I don't necessarily devour them. I just rip them apart and make my own cupcake sandwich. Nom nom. Anyway, cupcakes are an extremely popular dessert and I don't see them going anywhere for a while. There are some crazy cupcake flavors out there and I'm on a mission to find them. Here's what I got so far.

    • Maple & bacon
    • Beer-battered
    • Caramel macchiato
    • Cookies & cream
    • Boston cream
    • Twix
    • Cookie dough

I've heard maple & bacon cupcakes (and doughnuts) are amazing. I would love to try one since I love sweet and salty combos. I would also love to try caramel macchiato and Twix! They sound so yummy. I'm not a fan of Boston cream or cookie dough. I have also heard from people that beer-battered cupcakes don't have a flavor? I'm not sure how that's possible since beer is a pretty distinct flavor, but hey who knows.

Here are some of my favorite cupcake flavors:

    • Banana with cream cheese icing
    • Carrot with cream cheese icing
    • Chocolate with vanilla icing
    • Red velvet with cream cheese icing

Hmm...I guess I really like cream cheese icing! A good cupcake must be moist and not dry or else it just ruins the whole thing. For me, I don't like my icing super sweet either. I have a hard time eating a lot of bakeries buttercream because it's so sweet...and it's also sculpted into a mountain, which is just wayyyy to much for me. Sometimes I end up scooping off more than half the icing they plop on top because it can take away from the flavor of the cake. My favorite bakery is Billy's Bakery in NYC.

Do you know any crazy cupcake flavors? What are your favorite cupcakes?

I don't know any crazy cupcakes yet, but my favorite cupcakes are the green tea and strawberry cheese cake flavor @ http://www.tentothreebakery.nl/ in Rotterdam

I saw or read something a while back about a guy that opened a cupcake bakery to make "man" cupcakes - slightly larger than average cupcakes without the frilly looking liners in man approved flavors, like beer, bacon, and pizza.  I thought it was rather intriguing and honestly wish I could remember either where I saw it or what the name of the place/man was.

I'm personally a fan of pumpkin, carrot cake, and good ole chocolate or vanilla cupcakes (boosted a bit by fun frostings, like coffee, raspberry, and spiced rum cream cheese, to name a few).

I've never really had any crazy flavors.  Maybe the craziest I've heard is a margarita flavored cupcake.

There's a cupcake shop near where I live that makes the most amazing cinnamon toast crunch cupcake.  It has all that cinnamony-sugary stuff and it's filled with a cream cheese filling.

Cocoa Cayenne is my favorite... with cream cheese frosting.

Well, I try to create my own fun cupcake/cake flavors and combos.  Here are some that worked for me, and friends liked:

    * Strawberry Lemonade: yellow cake made with pureed strawberries instead of milk, add grated lemon zest, topped with tangy lemon buttercream frosting.
    * Chocolate Malt: Chocolate cupcake with chopped chocolate covered malt balls, chocolate mocha frosting with Ovaltine drink mix mixed in.
    * Irish Car Bomb: Guiness beer infused chocolate cake, whiskey and Irish cream buttercream frosting.
    * Tequila Sunrise: Tequila Sunrise cocktail used in place of milk in a yellow cake batter, vanilla frosting flavored with orange and lime zest and a bit of tequila.
    * Earthquake: (It has nothing to do with earthquakes but the first time I made it, the cake split across the top due to the domed layers not being trimmed--it looked like a crack in the San Andreas fault.) Orange flavored cake layers, filled with strawberry cream cheese frosting and diced strawberries, outside coated with more strawberry cream cheese filling and toasted coconut.  This was inspired by a pan dulce that was orange bread, strawberry coating and coconut.

When I go to bakeries, I normally pick simple vanilla or chocolate cupcakes in fear of picking a flavor combo I didn't like and having to spend $3 or more on it.

I know in beer bread, mostly it's just used for the yeast, but the flavor (and alcohol content) are cooked out of it. So it might be similar. My favorite is probably orange cream! And I made lemon rosemary, they were delish! I think both are on here somewhere.

@AnonymousBlonde@xanga - Hm..that's interesting haha. I didn't think of cupcakes as not being "meanly" but I guess some people do?

@FallingSafely@xanga - Lemon rosemary sounds so good!!

@rachel - They were amazing... the fresh rosemary tastes so different from the bottled stuff.
