  • Ice-Cream Making Workshop at Scoopy's & Cream

    A Delicious history of Ice-Cream:

A long long time ago way beyond your time and mine, ancient Persians would go to the top of the mountains to collect fresh snow, which they would then stow in cool underground chambers until summer and serve with grape juice concentrate. The ancient Greeks' version came with honey and fruits mixed with snow. The Arabs were the first to use milk as a key ingredient in the ice-cream production. Until the invention of the continuous freezer, which made previously-laborious ice-cream production and storage easy for mass production and consumption, ice-cream used to be a luxury product reserved only for special occasions.

Recipe for making basic custard-base ice-cream

    • 8 egg yolks
    • 1 liter of full cream milk
    • 200 ml of fine grained white caster sugar

So, are you ready to join me for some serious ice-cream making? :)

First, separate the egg yolks and egg whites. (Ladies, save the egg whites for your home facials!)

Whisk the egg yolks until smooth, add the sugar and whisk well until you get a thick custard mix.

Heat the full cream milk to about 175 degrees F and stir while heating.

Pour some heated milk over custard mix, keep whisking to ensure egg yolks are not cooked.

Place custard milk mix back into main pot. Stir and leave mixture to cool to room temperature before moving it to chill in the fridge.

Mirror mirror on the wall, who'll be the greatest chef of them all?

Brave volunteer trying her hand at taking over from our instructor.

Final output - Fresh handmade ice-cream. It was supposed to be more solid but the workshop ended before we could freeze the ice-cream long enough.

Bliss x 100. Yes, I'm that easily pleased!
