I May Not Like These But, I'm Still A Foodie
Have you ever had anyone point a finger at you and say "your not a foodie!"? This happens especially when I dislike certain foods. I take total offense into it because I have a passion for food. I love to eat it, I think about it, I dream about it, I love making it, I love looking at it, and I love reading about it.
Anyone can be a foodie. To be a foodie is not only to like food, but to be interested in it as well. Just as a good student will have a thirst for knowledge, a foodie wants to learn about food like myself.
If there are some foods you just don't like or weird foods you like? It's okay, it doesn't make you any less of a foodie. I have many friends that are foodies, and I just hate it when they say "your not a foodie!" just because I don't like something. Here's a list of foods, I'm not a huge fan of:

1. I seen durian all over Chinatown, and worst of all I can smell it in Chinatown. The durian is distinctive for its large size, odour, and formidable thorn-covered husk. The edible flesh emits a distinctive odor, pungent even when the husk is intact.
Some people regard the durian as a fragrant; others find the aroma overpowering. The smell evokes reactions from deep appreciation to intense disgust and has been describe as almonds, rotten onions, sulfur, and gym socks. The odour has even led to the fruit's banishment from certain hotels and public transportation in Southeast Asia. This is one food I will never like.

2. I tried blue cheese once at Outback Steakhouse with a salad and that was the first and the last time I ever had blue cheese. Blue cheese like durian carries a distinct smell, either from that or various specially cultivated bacteria. Blue cheese is usually eaten by itself or can be crumbled or melted over foods. I just can't stand the smell of blue cheese.

3. I eat spare ribs, pork chops and roast pork, but there are just parts of a pig that I can't bare to look at nor eat. When I go grocery shopping with my mom or by myself in the Chinese markets, I see pig noses, pig ears, pig tail, and all kinds of different parts. I've tried pork stomach before and it does not taste or feel appealing.

4. Believe it or not, I don't like oysters whether it's raw or cooked. I've had oysters a few times and I just never seem to like it because it has a taste that's just unappealing to me. I always feel weird when I see my friends eating raw oysters. I love clams. Mussels are okay, but oysters are just not something I won't ever be interested in.

5. I've tried raw fish before and I really didn't like it. Most of my friends and my boyfriend can eat raw fish, but the sight of raw fish sometimes makes me feel squeamish because it's slimy and whatnot. I do eat sushi, but it's mostly cooked.
As a foodie, are there foods you simply don't like?

Omg, durians smell so bad..
I used to work for a non-profit Asian health clinic. One time, someone smelled a gas leak and called the fire department. The fire department came in, evacuated the building and did a floor-to-floor search of the clinic to find the gas leak. Eventually they determined there was no gas leak, and traced the smell to a durian in the trash can.
:P
I pretty much eat anything that is not an insect or not an organ.
Oh, and Stinky Tofu. I just can't do that, as much as people tell me how awesome it tastes. I will not eat something that smells like poop.
Everything that you have listed above, I actually love eating. Balut is one thing that I will not eat.
@arenadi@xanga - AUGH, I don't like stinky tofu! I haven't tasted it, but that smell made me lose my appetite back in China. Things just don't taste right with that smell in my mouth. ><
@osmundaregalis@xanga - I get a bit freaked out thinking about eating balut, too. I'll eat a lot of things (I am Chinese, after all), but I do draw the line somewhere. XD
Just because there are a few foods you won't eat doesn't make you appreciate food less. I've only seen frozen durian at the market so I cannot say that I can't stand the smell because the frozen ones weren't emitting any odor--but I have been told that it is stinky. But I do have to agree and say that I am not a fan of organ meats, oysters (texture when raw or cooked is still weird!) and blue cheese (pungent!). I do eat some raw fish at sushi restaurants, mostly salmon (prepared simply), but that's about it. Also, I am not a fan of bittermelon and gamey meats, I am sure there are a few other things, but that's off the top of my head.
@osmundaregalis@xanga - I didn't know there was a name for that, I saw your comment and looked it up. I still have nightmares at seeing those "eggs" in a mixing bowl when my grandmother used them to make this steamed egg-herb (ginseng and others) custard. Needless to say I ate PB&J that night.
I need to try durian again. I only tried it once when I was really young, so I don't know if I still dislike it. I feel like your taste changes a lot from when you're little. I also dislike blue cheese though! Boyfriend and I ordered a cheese platter the last time we went out that included blue cheese, and all I could think was that it tasted like poop.
I'm not sure I could ever summon up the nerve to try some of those fermented Inuit dishes, like the one where they wrap a whole seagull in seal skin and bury it for months, after whcih you're supposed to suck out the fermented intestinal juices.
@arenadi@xanga - D: but but stinky tofu is so delicious! I was against stinky tofu at first because they served it steamed in a restaurant the first time I was exposed to it, but then we came across a vendor selling it fried during the night market and I became a convert. Omnomnom.
@arenadi@xanga - wait, you don't eat organs? But what about liver? And isn't skin technically an organ?
@just_the_average_jane@xanga - Alright alright, you got me :P Yes, I eat SOME organs lol. And OMFG that seagull fermented in seal skin sucking fermented intestinal juices thing sounds horrible. That's making me ill just thinking about it haha.
I think I just have such an aversion to poop that I can't deal with anything that smells like it. D:
I will eat (AND LOVE) everything on your list, except cheese. I hate cheese! Also, I will eat balut too.
On my list of things to forever hate: cheese, milk, yogurt.
Durian tastes better than its smell. It has a custard flavor with a hint of garlic.
what is the very first picture of? I don't consider myself a foodie, though I do have a big appetite. And occasionally I like to try new foods.
I find fennel and cumin absolutely disgusting, and I also don't really like sausage (except sweet chicken sausage). I have yet to try durian, but Andrew Zimmerman doesn't like it (he also hates walnuts), and I don't think anyone would dare suggest he isn't a foodie. :p Being a foodie doesn't mean you have to like everything.
Also, I hate blue cheese and mostly any cheese that is stinky or moldy, but I still consider myself a huge fan of cheese. :)
@maybmaybnot@xanga - The first picture is a small octopus. They're usually consumed while it's alive. Very popular in S. Korea.
@arenadi@xanga - I've never seen an actual stinky tofu but, according to my friends it smells pretty horrible, lol.
@osmundaregalis@xanga - I didn't know what a balut was so I googled it and man, I would never eat it either.
@just_the_average_jane@xanga - I don't exactly eat organs too, except for beef stomach which is popular in dim sum.
@EJC102486@xanga - I never tried fennel but, I do use cumin in some of my cooking and I love that taste it unleashes. I like most cheeses except for blue cheese and anything that looks like it.
@kev1nccho1@xanga - I don't eat octopus lols
I ate a lot raw seafood, and it's because I'm half Japanese. I don't like durian.
I despise durian. So much.
I also had a bad experience with sea urchin. I was told by friends that I was served bad quality sea urchin and that I must try it again. But, I'm not really sure if I want to.
Other than those, I would try anything once, regardless of how out-of-the-ordinary it is.
@kev1nccho1@xanga - eww yikes. to each their own i guess. thanks
I love blue cheese!
Durians <3
@SHORTiEExC@xanga - Wow you're brave to really love durian cause I can't lols.
