  • 7 Foods To Help You Through a Writers Block

I have recently, and unexpectedly, re-began writing poetry.

And while it is all fun and inspiring to be re-building my skills as a creative writer, I cannot help but get these terrible writers block now and then. So at times like these, I take a break get some inspiration in my kitchen or in the market.

So I've really come to realize that inspiration comes in the most unexpected choices of food--and most often sweets.
And while this is a very subjective list, I hope it can be somewhat helpful when you are struggling through your work!

    1. Gummy Worms

I was so excited when I saw a bag of gummy worms in the deli; only, I realized what I had so excitedly took was "rattle snakes"--but what's the difference, right?

I nibble on these while I am trying to write. I leave them dangling from my mouth when a sudden epiphany comes and I type away whatever that comes to my mind!

    2. Chessmen

Pepperidge Farm products are always a delight. I love love love their Milano (all mint, orange and original flavors), I tried almost all of their cookies, and beam whenever I get a bag of them from the store.

But of all the cookies they produce, my absolute favorite is the Chessmen, a very milky cookie with different chess patterns on them.

Perhaps this is because it makes me nostalgic when I eat them, and thus I get to think about many things when I have them.
But nonetheless, I am a huge fan!

Anybody else like to munch on these when you're working?

    3. Tea

To me, the main difference between tea and water is a matter scent. The most enjoyable part about drinking tea is in inhaling the aroma that comes with the warmth.

I like drinking tea while I'm writing because my olfactory senses are really sensitive, and my thoughts seem to become more heightened when I am enjoying my cup of tea.

Also, olfactory stimulation is always good for your brain. I guess it's similar to the concept of aroma therapy!

    4. Nuts

When you are sick of sugar, and you are feeling like savory, these are the best alternative.

I guess I can add the nutritional component, by suggesting that certain nuts are good for your brain; and I heard walnuts are the best representations of this quality!

But at the same time, it's a matter of moving our mouth, which stimulates your brain. Nuts are just meant for munching!

    5. Rice Balls

This is probably the most cooking-involved food item on this list, but when I am a bit too hungry to be having just sweets and snacks, I quickly make a small onigiri.

They are simple, easy, and really nice to make! And also, you can be very flexible with what you want in them!

I topped hot pepper sauce squid pate on the rice balls on the above pictures. They were SO GOOD!

    6. Noodles

It seems that many people are more familiar with the Shin ramen instant noodles, but really, my favorite is the Jin ramen.

I know, they sound the same, right? But the Jin ramen has a milder taste and it's not nearly as salty as the Shin ramen.

I also love quickly making shio instant noodles by topping them quickly with half-boild eggs and chopped scallions!

    7. Pocky

I am proud to say that I am an ultimate Pocky addict. I am actually more familiar with another term, "Peppero," which is actually the Korean version of Pockies!

I can eat these anywhere, anytime, in anyway,
so I always have a pack of pocky (men's pocky are delicious!) when I am working.

They are my inspiration and I hope they are for you as well!

What kind of foods do you have for inspiration?
Do you also use any of these to help you through a writers block?

    • About Me: Dear Reader, Much like how you have navigated your way to this blog, I too am navigating myself through the complex and vast world of food today. How ironic is that the most common and mundane rituals of our daily lives--that is, eating--can open a gateway into understanding the world that we have created for ourselves? I pose questions and explore the world of food in one of the world's largest and most dynamic gastropolis. Here I explore every aspects of food to get an understanding of Culture; from culinary pratices, to current trends of food, to discovering not-yet visited restaurants, to baking, to wine, and endlessly more! Join me through my thoughts by contributing with a comment on each post. Thanks for reading! I write to you with all my heart, love, and passion for food. -Bonvivante-
