Make Your Own Pumpkin Spice Latte
Fall is in the air so of course that means it's time for Pumpkin Spice Lattes from Starbucks. I got paid on Friday so I thought I would treat myself to something nice. When I saw $3.90 come up on the cash register though (have they gone up in price? didn't think a tall size was that much), I knew that I couldn't make this a regular occurrence so I decided to make my own.
I've found several recipes, some that call for canned pumpkin, some that don't, but I figured that since the Starbucks version doesn't have actual pumpkin in it (or at least I'm pretty sure it doesn't), I went with this recipe I found on allrecipes.com. I can vouch that it tastes pretty good and is similar to the real dealio. I did tweak it a bit. I added a spoonful more of sugar, used 2% milk instead of whole, used french vanilla coffee instead of regular, and substituted Cool Whip Lite for whipped cream. Also, before you go out and buy pumpkin spice (which I think can be expensive), you should totally try to make your own if you can.
There's tons of versions out there but the one I used is this, courtesy of cdkitchen.com:
- 4 teaspoons cinnamon
- 2 teaspoons ground ginger
- 1 teaspoon allspice
- 1 teaspoon nutmeg
1. Mix together and store in an airtight container.
Do you have a good copycat recipe for your favorite food/drink?

Mmm... yummy!
It's actually more expensive to go out and go purchase all those individual spices if you don't have them than to just get a container of pumpkin pie spice, particularly if the flavors are something you enjoy enough to use in it things other than pumpkin pie (or lattes). I use that stuff in everything from oatmeal to yogurt to apple crisp to cookies.
yes :)
@AnonymousBlonde@xanga - yeah I actually had most of those spices from making other desserts so it was cheaper for me to just buy allspice instead of pumpkin spice
Oooh thanks! Didn't even think about making this beforehand :D
I have my own recipe of signature chicken cutlets that I haven't really shared with anyone.
I LOVE you for posting this:) I've never tried it but def. will. Thanks!
Do you recommend the recipe from allrecipes or the one from cdkitchen?
(It sounds like you've tried both.)Thank you! That sounds wonderful.
@goodeatings - mmm i'm sensing a post on that one
starbucks doesn't use whole milk, unless you ask for it.
I do believe they sell the pumpkin spice syrup at your local starbucks, they sell most all of them. Check your grocery store to see if they carry other brands, most of the time they do and they have seasonal ones from time to time. At least, Martin's stores do (which is a part of Giant, so it's probably not hard to find). And I'm sure whole foods sells things like this too, but I try to stay away from the one close to me here; it's in a very busy part of town and I can't stand large crowds...
@i_am_not_short@xanga - Most stores will not sell to the public.
I've never had a problem getting it, either from starbucks stores or their website. Also, like I said, Martin's sells it so it's really not hard to get if you're in VA.

@i_am_not_short@xanga - def have to check that out!
Those are all great basic spices to have in your kitchen anyway.
I never realized how many people are obsessed with pumpkin spice lattes. I don't get the allure, personally. But definitely makes sense to make it at home- holy cow $3.90?!?!
I LOVE YOU FOR THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Amerindian666@xanga - haha. I (miraculously) don't live near any Starbucks, and most people I hang out with are super coffee snobs who wouldn't drink anything that sugary and far removed from actual coffee (I am TOTALLY aware how snobby that sounded! I'm just describing the people around me!) Anyway, this shelters me from the drinking habits of mainstream America I guess? I've just been blown away this year by all the FB status updates, blogs, ads, etc regarding Pumpkin Spice Lattes...like the country is infatuated and I totally missed when this happened. I've never had one, nor heard of one before this autumns' explosion of love.
