NYC Cupcake Shops Take the Cake
I have an obsession with cupcakes (sometimes referred to as cuppycakes). Living in NYC, I have them right at my fingertips basically whenever I crave one. There are so many cupcake shops in NYC, most of which I haven't even tried, but there are a small amount that I just cannot live without.
My favorite cupcake shop is Billy's Bakery. They make the best banana cupcakes ever! If you like bananas and cupcakes then you must try Billy's. It's so moist and the banana flavor isn't overpowering. I also love love love the cream cheese frosting that is sculpted perfectly on top. I am very picky about my icing. I hate most buttercream frosting because I think it's way too sweet and takes over the delicious taste of the cupcake. Believe it or not, I think canned frosting like Pillsbury is so much better than homemade buttercream.
Billy's also has carrot cupcakes, which are amazing, along with the classic chocolate and vanilla. A traditional cupcake is $2.50 and a specialty cupcake (like banana or carrot) is $3.00. Aside from cupcakes, Billy's has huge slices of cakes, cookies & bars, cheesecakes and pies. Billy's Bakery is also frequented by many celebrities like Katie Holmes and Blake Lively.
Another one of my favorite cupcake shops is Baked by Melissa. These cupcakes are literally the size of a quarter, and they come in so many fun, delicious flavors. Some flavors include tie-dye, peanut butter & jelly, s'mores, chocolate chip pancake, and mint chocolate chip. Since the cupcakes are so mini, you must buy more than one. For 3 cupcakes it's $3.00, for 6 it's $5.50 and for 12 it's $10.00. You can also buy 25, 50 or 100 for parties and such. Last year my friend bought 100 for a Halloween party and they came in a pizza box! Me and my roommate pretty much ate the entire box...but that's another story.
What makes a cupcake shop special to me is it's ability to stand out from the others and of course the cupcake quality. Since there are so many cupcake shops in NYC, it's extremely important that each shop has it's own personality to make sure that it stands out among the crowd. What I love about Billy's is that it's very old fashioned. The inside looks like it's decorated from the 1950's. I feel like I am standing in an old fashioned kitchen and it's just a very warm, friendly atmosphere.
On the other hand, Baked by Melissa is more of a modern cupcake shop and it's extremely unique because of it's cupcake size. No other cupcake shop that I have seen have cupcakes that even closely resemble Baked by Melissa. Both shops have multiple locations throughout NYC, which is also convenient. I don't have to travel too far to satisfy my craving for a yummy cuppycake!
Have you ever tried Billy's Bakery or Baked by Melissa? What are some of your favorite bakeries?

I love Baked By Melissa! I'm thinking of whether to stop by tomorrow to pick up a few of their cupcakes too. I like Crumbs and Babycakes NYC as well.
Sadly I have yet to visit New York, or try these delicious looking baked goodies! I'll try just about any cupcake from any bakery, but I'd have to say my fave baked goodies are from Porto's--not necessarily the cupcakes, but the cakes and traditional Cuban pastries are delish! I am a bit of an amateur baker, so I like to try different things at home and force my friends to try my science experiments. Some were good...others not so much. For the most part, I like my cupcakes really simple--classic flavors, uncluttered by too many add-ins. (Such as chocolate, vanilla/white/yellow, carrot, red velvet.) I am not too particular about the types of frostings, as long as it is not the type that is made from a huge blob of vegetable shortening and a bucket of powdered sugar. Smooth, creamy, sometimes fluffy suits my taste. I noticed you mentioned that you don't like buttercream frosting because it is too sweet--not all types of buttercream frosting are created equally. Some types are sweeter than others.
what does tie-dye taste like??
the cupcakes are so pricey D;.
@yuminmybelly - I've never tried the tie-dye one, because I'm freaked out by all the random colors
I think I tried a couple of cupcakes from Billy's... which tasted so good.
@yuminmybelly - The tie-dye one is one of my favorites! It's so yummy. Its almost like vanilla with vanilla icing.
why must all the good cupcake places be in new york! D;
