My First Dining Experience At...Five Guys
I've tried Shake Shack last year, but I never tried Five Guys until recently. It seemed like everyone in my circle of friends have tried it, but me. There is a Five Guys literally everywhere I turn.
There's one two blocks from my school, there's one near my internship in Mid-Manhattan, and they're building one near my part-time job. I've heard mixed reviews about Five Guys, but no matter what any one said I wanted to try it myself and see if it's better than Shake Shack.
My boyfriend tried Five Guys already, but was willing to try at the location near my school so we met up for a mid-week lunch together.
While waiting for our burgers and fries being cooked, my boyfriend brought over peanuts. I thought this was too cute especially at a fast food chain restaurant, because I know Shake Shack doesn't do that and many others as well.

I decided to get the Little Bacon Burger since I never tried bacon on a burger yet. I decided to get grilled mushrooms, lettuce, and tomato in my burger. Overall, I feel the bacon was slightly burnt to almost a charcoal black color which wasn't too appealing.
It's sad that they don't have different types of cheese on their menu because I would have most preferred mozzarella or Swiss cheese. The after effects of the little bacon burger didn't sit too well in my stomach.

My boyfriend ordered a little burger with tomato, grilled mushrooms, and pickles. It was pretty much your standard and simple burger. I didn't really think it was anything exuberant or special.

I've been told that the fries at Five Guys are much better than Shake Shack, but I beg to differ. The fries were crispy, but mediocre. I feel I've had better fries before. Honestly, I wasn't too pleased with the fries.Although I don't think Five Guys was top notch and it didn't please my taste buds too much, I'm glad I tried it because there is a first time for everything. I may give Five Guys another try and maybe at another location. I guess I got overexcited about Five Guys and when I tried it and felt it was mediocre, I wasn't too happy with it.
Have you tried Five Guys? What do you think of it?

Five guys is okay but shake shack is 295902739859 times better.
I don't understand the Five Guys love. I tried the one down in the Inner Harbor in Baltimore and I thought it was "okay" but nothing spectacular like people rave about. I'd rather make my own burger.
You usually have to go to different ones to try out how they manage their burgers. Overall, I like Five Guys and just any burger in general, just as long as it's not burnt to a crisp.
I think that the beef at Five Guys tends to be better than most other fast food chains. Also, they offer jalapenos, tobasco sauce, and A1 sauce, all of which are rarities at comparable burger joints. Even better, they use fresh jalapenos as opposed to the pickled ones that you find pretty much everywhere else. That's why I like Five Guys. Then again, I'm one of those freaks who orders jalapeno tobasco burgers.
As for the fries, you have to get the cajun-style fries. Those are amazing. Their regular fries are decent but not exceptional. However, I find few fast food places with fries as good as their cajun fries.
Nah.. I'll pass. I don't like the look of the burgers and fries.
I was also told that their food was amazing, but I thought it was pretty mediocre.
I've never been to one, I don't feel like driving an hour for a burger, I can get one locally or better yet fire up the grill and make a better one myself.
Five Guys is so good. Also, you definitely need to order cajun fries when going there... they're amazing.
Five guys opened in Toronto not too long ago. My boyfriend was absolutely thrilled and on the second day they were open, of course we went to check it out.
I was very displeased with their cajun fries. There is nothing appetizing about them in my opinion, and the burger was alright for the most part... but not something I would go out of my way for.
I can make better burgers at home for cheaper. But that's just my opinion. My boyfriend will claim that it's the best burger place he has ever eaten at, but I have then again questioned my boyfriends taste buds in general before.
I adore 5 guys. But I've never had shake shack
I haven't tried Five Guys yet, though I've heard many raves, but after seeing the pics and reading your review, I probably won't go out of my way to try them any time soon. Thanks for the review!
I like Five Guys. The free toppings and sauces are awesome. A1 sauce on a burger is so good! But mostly I like their burgers because they're like burgers you would make yourself, they have a homemade feel to me. They're not super fancy or have that wow factor, because they're something simple that you could make yourself. Now if I had a grill and was super into grilling, I probably wouldn't care as much because then I would make them myself, but seeing as I don't, Five Guys is pretty awesome to me.
Let's give somewhat of a west coast experience. Visually, the places seem similar to In-N-Out's look. That's the most noticeable thing for people who frequent In-N-Out...or have been there enough to know they have the same design no matter what. That said, I've only eaten at Five Guys once. I did like the peanuts. I didn't like how crowded it was, but this was probably a few weeks after its opening...or just a busy day, I can't remember. Others in my family had their food. Their spiced fries or whatever were too full of spices, which kind of ruins the flavor of the fries themselves. I did like the free peanuts. I also liked how you could choose so many different toppings.
*noticed another comment* Oh...Cajun fries. That makes sense.
Since their main gimmick would be varying toppings and sauces/condiments, they technically have a wider variety than In-N-Out's burgers. Regular fries at Five Guys are better to stick with than the batch of Cajun/spiced fries. There's not much to say other than that. You shouldn't compare their burgers to In-N-Out's...the majority of people will prefer In-N-Out. Rather, enjoy the different flavors you can get out of the toppings! The burgers are too different in taste and texture to compare, with pros and cons on both sides, but on its own, it's defintely a burger place for people to try at least once.
Oh right, I think I'd actually see the whole topping thing the same way I see Subway's. So people who try different toppings in Subway's and can love the same sandwich again, this is the burger version for you. :)
@should_I_Tell_You@xanga - Personally I love In-N-Out Burger! I love that the menu is simple and everything is made fresh. My choice of toppings would be lettuce, tomato, cheese and grilled onions. I think fast food type places rarely get the "gourmet" toppings right, either it's poor (quality) representation of the ingredient, or the combination of flavors on a specialty burger is weird.
Recently Five Guys opened up some shops near me but I have yet to to try them. I'm a California girl, I love In-N-Out Burger. Also have yet to try Shake Shack. These are places I've only heard of, never eaten at so I cannot make a righteous comparison as to which I prefer.
I like in-in-out burger better. Compared to each's standard burger, In-in-out's burger is better formed. The addition of mushrooms to the Five Guy's burger makes it soggy and the fact they charge $5 for the things they add on isn't economically friendly to a college student.
there's a five guys close to campus. i like how they have a special veggie sandwich for you.... but i mostly get the fries because they are DELICIOUS. YUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gross. Varsity in GA is better.
I think they have the best, juiciest burgers I've ever tasted.
@Crono09@xanga - I always get jalapenos on mine too. Gotta love the spicy stuff.
I've tried Five Guys, and I thought they were pretty good. Of course, it might be that some locations do things a little better than others.
@should_I_Tell_You@xanga - in n out is amazing i wish they'd have them here in the east coast. we used to call the animal fries dirty fries lol.
Those fries look disgusting.
There's nothing better than Five Guys.
Five Guys was okay. I did like the options for the hamburgers though. The peanuts were awesome, my boys really liked that part.
I have tried them and i don't really care for them at all.The food made me sick and for me that's all i need to not eat there. i don't see what the big deal is with them.
I've tried Five Guys and it's good, but not really anything special, like you said. Never heard of Shake Shack - maybe a west coast? thing? - but I prefer Fudrucker's...now THAT's good.
