456 Shanghai Cuisine Hits The List
Every Wednesday in The New York Times there's always a dining section written by the great food writers of The New York Times. One of the well-known writers and restaurant reviewer Sam Sifton reviewed one of the many New York Chinatown's Shanghainese restaurants called 456 Shanghai Cuisine.
I've must have walked past 456 Shanghai Cuisine bunch of times, but never really felt an urge to try the restaurant. I figured it must be like all the other Shanghainese restaurants I've tried in Chinatown - good the first two times, than when you least expect it, the food quality and customer service just falls down the drain.
However, as a foodie and a food blogger I should not feel that way, right? I should be open-minded and try a restaurant at least once or twice before I come to a conclusion of it.
Any way, 456 Shanghai Cuisine originally was a small restaurant located in Chatham Square in Chinatown in the 1970's, but was later shut down. Recently, a grand son of one of the original owners decided to open 456 Shanghai Cuisine again on Mott Street.
Shanghai Cuisine is famous for their soup dumplings also known as Xiao Long Bao (XLB) because they're small and delicate. Inside the soup dumpling is a porky broth and grounded pork meat. People often await for the pleasure in the soup dumplings. They're served in a bamboo steamer and a side of black vinegar with bits of ginger on the side. It's a great treat for all year round!
I really enjoyed the article that Sam Sifton wrote even though 456 Shanghai Cuisine received one star from him. I think the review in of itself was well written and he described the history, the food, the decor, and the mood down to the point.
I don't know if I'll give 456 Shanghai Cuisine one star on yelp and my restaurants reviews that I do, but I'll let you know what my decision is when I try it out.
My title is called "456 Shanghai Cuisine Hits The List" because I being an adventurous foodie that loves trying new restaurants and food and being that I like to be organized in certain aspects, 456 Shanghai Cuisine made it to my "food list" (a list of restaurants/food places I want to try). Since, I live about 40-50 minutes from Chinatown it won't be a hassle to get to 456 Shanghai Cuisine to try it out.

Have you tried Joe's Shanghai (allegedly THE original) and their soup dumplings? If so, which place is better? drroool:)
Asian fooooood. Om nom nom!
I have a terrible weakness when it comes to these kinds of dishes. Yummy!
I think some places like 456 Shanghai Cruisine deserves an acknowledgement from food lovers. They may not be very famous or have a big menu, but the food speaks for itself.
I always think that we should try out new places and see for ourselves before making any judgment. Some places can really suprise you. I once had this absolutely scrumptious dinner at this hawker stall on the sidewalk.
I love dumplings !! I am addicted to them. These look so soft & palatable. Yummmm.
