  • The Ultimate Rivalry: Starbucks vs. Dunkin Donuts

More than approximately 100 million people drink coffee everyday.  Starbucks vs. Dunkin Donut, the ultimate rivalry when it comes down to who has the best coffee.

Dunkin Donuts:  Dunkin Donuts is known for its simplicity and unique colored orange and red cups. However, one of the downsides to Dunkin Donuts is that it doesn't feel like a coffee shop. Seating is much like a fast food restaurant with benches and tables.

According to a friend, Dunkin Donuts has one brand of coffee that they market as simply "Dunkin Donuts coffee". Dunkin Donuts uses 100-percent Arabica coffee beans and has its own coffee specifications.

Cost is a big factor when it comes to coffee which may explain why Dunkin Donuts is so favored amongst Starbucks. Dunkin Donuts keeps its prices low and offers a high quality product. It gives what they want at a price everyone can afford.

Starbucks:   Starbucks has a more homely feel with dim lighting and soothing music playing in the background to make you feel good. I always feel the atmosphere at Starbucks is better than Dunkin Donuts.

Many people claim Starbucks coffee has almost a burnt taste to it but, I feel Starbucks coffee has little bit of bitterness to their coffee. The burnt taste in the coffee leaves a very strong taste to it. However, if you're a college student, Starbucks is the way to go for that caffeine kick.

One unique factor about Starbucks is their selection of Tazo tea which comes in black, green or herbal tea. The bottled iced and juiced teas are crisp, refreshing, and soothing. The Tazo tea are also available as Tea lattes which are lightly sweetened and served with other milk, whether you get it hot or cold. It's still delicious!

It's no secret that when it comes to Starbucks, the artfully crafted coffee and teas here are more expensive than Dunkin Donuts beverages. If you prefer coffee or tea that has more variety and homely, than Starbucks is the way to go for you!

If you ask me, which do I prefer: Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks? I'd have to say Starbucks because I feel their coffee is rich in flavor and that bit of bitterness is what I prefer. It may cost a little extra especially when I order a specially made beverage but, I am willing to pay a little more for better quality .

Both of these are two great places to go for coffee, and each place has it's pros and cons. It all really depends on what type of mood you are in, what you prefer and which place is more convenient.

The uniqueness of the flavor and the uniqueness of the product is a huge factor. The real conclusion is the flavor you are craving is the one you are going to choose.

Do you prefer Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks? Why?

Dunkin Doughnuts has better coffee Starbucks has better pastries(despite dunkin doughnuts actually having pretty damn good doughnuts as well)

  • starcrossedloversdivine@xanga

I don't go to either, but if I'm going to stop somewhere for a coffee-based beverage, I'll go to starbucks. I'd rather spend more for better tasting drinks than get something mediocre for less.

It really depends what I want. I love dunkin donuts when I'm just going to pick up a quick cup of coffee to go for the day. It's affordable which is nice and sometimes all I want is an actual coffee instead of a lattee. However I was a college student once and while I sometimes went to Dunkin's late at night when cramming for a test, Starbucks was my favorite place to sit down during the day, do my class reading, and write papers. If I feel like sitting down, lounging, and having a cup of coffee with a friend this is the place to go. It really is a matter of what I feel like having but I don't necessarily prefer one over the other.

@starcrossedloversdivine@xanga - I feel the same way because I rather spend a little extra for better quality than for a not so great quality. High Five!

  • ask_ashleyyy@xanga

I like that medium DD iced coffees are the size of a Starbucks venti and like half the price haha

  • twentyfourskies@xanga

Neither, as I prefer indie shops above any chain. But I can't answer this question unbiased because a) I work at the Bux and b) there aren't any Dunkins in California.

I find that most Starbucks' tend to let you add your own amounts of milk and sugar, which is perfect for those of us who notice either the excess or insufficient amounts that Dunkin Donuts employees put in their servings of coffees.

Aside from that one tiff, however, Dunkin Donuts all the way; they taste fresh and amazing each time, whereas Starbucks is just yuck. Also, I do like their box o' joe option for parties or meetings.

  • I_am_naughty@xanga

I like Starbucks because of the nice seats and also they have non-coffee beverages like vanilla frappucino and green tea.

  • snaylie@xanga

Neither! TIM HORTONS ALL THE WAY.

  • yuminmybelly

i heard that starbucks and dunkin both have the same coffee suppliers. starbucks is more expensive because their beans are free-trade (workers get a teeny bit more than market price, which i still don't think is very much), while dunkin donuts beans aren't free trade. another reason starbucks is more expensive is because they take more time to make individuals feel like they are in control of their own drink, by offering customizations and stuff.

  • anchoredreams@xanga

@snaylie@xanga - Heck yes! Starbucks and Dunkin don't even come close to Tim Hortons.

  • deemure@xanga

I prefer dunking donuts just because of the price. I honestly can't afford a 5 dollar cup of coffee every day but I will treat myself once in a while.

  • babybug329@xanga

I'm a "brew at home" kind of person.  I have had coffee drinks at Starbucks, but they were usually loaded with sugar and cream so I cannot say how good the coffee is actually.  Apparently there are no Dunkin' Donuts in my neck of the woods...only have had the supermarket type to brew at home.  It was pretty good.

  • pokemonloverfreak@xanga

How about not drinking coffee? I like that option best.

  • AuCinema@xanga

Neither. I have a local coffee shop that I usually go to. Dunkin Donuts has an odd taste to me, and the Starbucks near me always burns their coffee. Yuck!

  • Gentemann@xanga

Having worked with both as a marketing consultant...they both have unique strategies...neither try too hard to mimic the the other...Dunkin' has loyal followers and so does Starbucks and there is only a small percentage of consumers that overlap at the shops...in retail however there is fierce competition at grocers.

They have certainly raised the bar for coffee consumption virtually killing instant coffee at home and in the work place...I worked with Nestle as well and they are still kicking themselves that they missed the wave of gourmet coffee in shops.

  • Cambios@xanga

Starbucks coffee is simply better but way more expensive than coffee should ever be anywhere. Dunkin offers doughnuts and a bigger variety of holiday coffee but their service is hurried and, at least with the one near me, bitchy.

I still prefer my coffee at home. At least the people are nice even if the coffee varies from day to day.

  • Crono09@xanga

I think that Dunkin' Donuts has better iced coffee, and like @ask_ashleyyy@xanga said, you get twice as much as Starbucks for half the price. However, I prefer Starbucks for everything else.

  • rAzOrKisS09@xanga

I prefer Dunkin Donuts always. Have never been a big fan of Starbucks. I used to go to Caribou Coffee a lot but they are very expensiveeee.

  • Tokillthepanther@xanga

If you live in the midwest, Alterra Coffee trumps them both.

  • Coffee_and_Chem@xanga

There is no rivalry or competition. DD coffee is like pee in a cup. I got an "iced mocha" when I was desperate and in New England once and it was like watery chocolate milk. DD coffee is for people who don't actually like coffee- it's thin, disgusting, no bite or flavor to it.
They're not even comparable really, starbucks is on a whole different level and so much better.

  • Yoru_Kendo@xanga

When it comes to black coffee I like Starbucks. Not because of quality, necessarily, but because of preference. Starbucks has that black death coffee that, if drank straight, will wire you more than an eight ball of cocaine will. I like overly powerful coffee, it tastes the best for me.

Now when it comes to doughnuts, Dunkin is the king of my heart. Nothing pretentious, nothing thats trying to be super gourmet (its just a doughnut after all), just simplicity done right. If you can master the simplicity of something then there is no need to go beyond. Especially not for a doughnut.

  • xjordano0x@xanga

well I hate coffee but I like Dunkin' Donuts' prices much more. It's a good place to get breakfast on the run. Starbucks does have a better atmosphere, but I don't really bring my laptop out.. I'm too paranoid about people around me lol.

  • purpleranger

If I have to choose between those two, it's Dunkin Donuts.  The only place you can get it in Lousville is at Thornton's (convenience store), and all of their drinks -- fountain, coffee, or whatever -- is 89 cents regardless of size.  I got a 32-ounce coffee yesterday, and a caffeine buzz like you wouldn't believe.

My own personal preference, though is for the coffee at Speedway.

  • fromprivatetopublic@xanga

to me they're both good! i work at starbucks and i've basically tried everything. starbucks prices things to high and dunkin donuts doesn't that's really the only difference to me! :)
