  • Dip Me in Serendipity

Last Monday, my boyfriend, Danny, took me to Serendipity for the first time!  I had tried to get in twice before, an was told that the wait would be three hours.

I guess because it was a Monday, we were seated within a half hour. The place was adorable, with a little store in the front and pictures on the wall and funky lights hanging from the ceiling.

I felt like I had entered Munchkin Land from The Wizard of Oz. Everything was so bright and colorful and festive-looking. I was surprised to see no yellow brick road.

It was much, much smaller than I had anticipated. (Although Danny did tell me that there was an upstairs, as well.) There were about fifteen tables in the room we were sitting in, and they were all full.

When I first took a look at the menu, I was completely overwhelmed. I could not believe how many different desserts and dessert-like drinks there were to choose from!

I ordered the Frrrozen Hot Chocolate (recommended to me by at least a handful of friends) and Danny got the Frozen Espresso.

They came out in what can only be described as bowls. My jaw dropped as soon as they were placed in front of us. I oogled at the beauty and sheer size of the drinks. Just to paint a picture, my drink had 5 straws in it!

My shock and excitement didn't stop there, either. Our desserts came out minutes later – the Coward's Size Banana Split for Me and the “Can’t Say No” Sundae for Danny.

I don't know what the non-coward's portion of the banana split would have looked like, but I'm pretty sure I'd still be eating it right now had I ordered it.

It had two huge bananas, three large scoops of ice cream (chocolate, vanilla and strawberry), a mountain of whip cream, chopped nuts, hot fudge, and a cherry (I know!).

Danny's was almost exactly the same, minus the nuts and with an additional item: a piece of peanut butter humble pie. Let's just say I cried a little when I ate it.

If I took five bites of it and four sips of my Frrrozen Hot Chocolate it was a lot. The amount of food was overwhelming, especially since we had just come from dinner.

At some point in the evening, I took my finger and wiped some chocolate off of Danny's cheek.

"You have a little chocolate on your face, babe," I said, smiling.

"Jen, look at where we are. That's like telling a guy in a Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest that he has a little hot dog on his face."

I laughed for five minutes, and then cried because you can't wrap up melting ice cream.

Have you ever been to Serendipity? How was it?!

    • About Me: I have had a love affair with food for as long as I can remember. Some people like to drink, some people like to party -- but nothing makes me happier than sitting down to an awesome dinner in a hip (or traditional) restaurant with my family and friends. And the more you get to know me, the more you'll realize that I would give you the shirt off my back, but never -- ever -- try and steal food from my plate! I can do mean things with a fork!
