  • Can Food Addictions Save your Life?

As I was driving to my cousin's house the other day, I heard an odd story on the radio about a woman named Elsie Campbell who was addicted to eating lettuce back in 2002. She was eating 3-4 heads of lettuce every day. I was intrigued and decided to read up on it.

According to the Telegraph, her husband Jim became suspicious that the addiction was a sign that something was wrong with her body. After seeing medical help, doctors discovered a lump and Elsie was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Fortunately, she is now okay after having treatments and getting the lump removed. Elsie noted that she no longer craved lettuce and both she and her husband believe that her lettuce addiction saved her life. Jim found that lettuce contains a nutrient that people with breast cancer lack, which could have indicated why she craved it so much. The couple has even started a website to help those in a similar situation.

While Jim and Elsie believe that food addictions could be a strong indication to a health problem, experts are more skeptical. Dr. David Katz, founder of the Yale Prevention Center, stated in an ABC News article that "people don't reliably crave foods they actually need".

Could it really be possible the food addictions are linked to medical issues or do you think that Elsie's situation was a mere coincidence?
