  • The Benefits of Healthy Snacks

Have you ever had that feeling where it's 3o'clock or 4o'clock in the afternoon and you begin having the munchies and just want to snack on something?

Well, your not alone because I get that feeling all the time. By snacking you are fueling your body and maintaining your energy level, blood sugar level, and appetite level.

Now this doesn't meant the Twinkies and the gummy bears are the way to go. Everyone knows that even if they are tasty, they pack in calories, refined sugar, and sometimes trans-fats - all of which are a leading cause to weight gain and further medical problems.

Instead of sugary treats, there are other snacks that you can reach for that are not only good for you but taste good too and contains good fats like omega-3, protein, and fiber.

Fruits: All fruits are nutritional, filling, and low in fat. Grab an apple, banana, pear, grapes, or other portable fruit as you dash out the door every morning.

If you grab a different fruit every day, you'll obtain a good variety of nutrients plus fiber and you won't get bored with the same old snack. In addition, most of these fruits are rich in vitamin C and a good source of natural energy and sugars.

Nuts: Choose nuts over chips for a crunchy alternative. Nuts are rich in heart-healthy fats. Almonds and other nuts are a naturally high source of vitamin E, calcium, magnesium, and potassium and are rich in protein and fiber.

Yogurt: Eating a snack with protein rather than just carbs can help tailor your hunger, keeping daily calories in check. Good options include an ounce of nuts or a a small low-fat yogurt.

Although yogurt isn't an antidepressant, vitamin B12 rich low-fat yogurt might help lift a bad mood and its live bacteria are your friends. In addition, yogurt can make you fuller rather than other snack.

Edamame: Edamame beans are rich in vitamins and minerals but, they're also quite tasty. Soybeans also help prevent breast cancer among woman. Soy proteins can alleviate the symptoms of hyper tensions, decrease insulin resistance, and prevent damage to the kidneys.

Carrots: Carrots are one of the most nutritious root vegetables. They are an excellent source of antioxidant compounds and the richest vegetable source of carotenes which give them their bright orange color.

They are also rich in fiber, antioxidant Vitamins C and E, calcium, and potassium. Carrots also help to protect sight and night vision.

There are some pretty healthy snacks that you can choose from rather than resorting to the next bag of chips, ding dongs, or Swedish fish that you see. These are not the only healthy snacks that are available because you can always do a little research.

I personally love eating fruits and I eat at least two or three fruits a day and I love edamame beans especially when they're lightly salted.

What are some of the healthy snacks that you eat?
