  • Can't Get Enough of Bun

I love eating Vietnamese food, but there is one particular item that I always love to order from almost any Vietnamese restaurant and that is the Vietnamese Rice Vermicelli Bowl also known as "Bun" in Vietnamese.

Bun is actually the origin of many Vietnamese dishes. It is also a versatile produce to work with.

When you order a rice vermicelli bowl, it is usually a medium-sized bowl or large bowl. In addition, you get a sweet fish sauce as well for flavoring your noodles and other contents inside

A typical rice vermicelli bowl usually comes with cucumber, mint, parsley, Vietnamese sweet relish (carrots and dai-kon), and of course the noodles. However, there are many variations of the rice vermicelli bowl and what you can order.

    Bun Cha Gio

Bun Cha Gio simply means Spring Rolls with Rice Vermicelli, pork and crab meat. Underneath the rice vermicelli is some greens - romaine lettuce and chopped mint.I especially love how the spring rolls are in a beautiful and golden color, making this lovely bowl attractive!

I love that the chef added a lot of scallions because it made the Bun Cha Gio even more attractive. I don't know about you, but I feel green always brings out a lot of beauty in food.

    Bun Cha Gio Bo Lui

This is Bun Cha Gio Bo Lui which simply means grilled beef & spring rolls with sesame seasnoning lettuce on rice vermicelli. This is actually from my favorite restaurant Thai Son.

This is actually an interesting rice vermicelli bowl because the grilled beef are rolled into little rolls and inside the rolls is a sprig of onion which tastes sweet. It's almost like a surprise inside. The rice vermicelli in this bowl is actually more thicker than in the Bun Cha Gio.

This is a heavy dish to devour because there's a lot of ingredients such as spring rolls, rice vermicelli, grilled beef, and you can't forget about the bottom portion where there's shredded lettuce, cucumber, and the Vietnamese sweet relish.

    Bun Xe Lua

The name Bun Xe Lua is actually dervied from the restaurant Xe Lua that is located in New York City's Chinatown. Bun Xe Lua is a rice vermicelli noodle dish that contains barbecue pork, shrimp, spring rolls with shredded lettuce and scallions. The spring rolls at Xe Lua are miniature size and definitely smaller than the average size for a Vietnamese spring roll.

The sweet fish sauce that Xe Lua uses has a little spice in it and appears to be a little different than most fish sauces. This bowl of heaven is sure to satisfy your hunger and make your stomach happy.

    Bun Nem Nuong

Bun Nem Nuong is a rice vermicelli bowl with grilled pork hash. I always wondering what a "hash" was in Asian cuisine because typically most of us are only familiar with potato hash. I'm still not sure what "pork hash" is, but it was soft, tender, and well flavored.

Bun Nem Nuong is one of the similiar rice vermicelli bowls I feel because there aren't as much food thrown into the bowl whereas the ones I've mentioned before. All that is in the Bun Nem Nuong is the rice vermicelli, crushed peanuts, grilled pork hash, scallions, and the green and relish beneath the noodles.

    Sweet Fish Sauce

This is the sweet fish sauce that typically comes with your bowl of rice vermicelli. However, all restaurants fish sauces look and may taste differently. This one for instance has bits of carrot and bits of radish.

Be careful when you pour the fish sauce into your food because if you get it on your hands or clothes, it's not going to look good or smell. It only tastes good.

As you can see there are many variations of rice vermicelli bowls. I love them because it's versatile and it fills me up whenever I'm extremely hungry, but most of all because it tastes great!

Have you tried Vietnamese rice vermicell bowls? What is your favorite one?
