I'm no vegetarian, so clearly not an expert on the cuisine. But recently I've been trying to reduce my meat consumption mostly for health reasons. So when I discovered that there was a vegetarian Chinese restaurant a few blocks from my apartment on Flatbush Avenue, I jumped at the chance to try it.
It was a bright Sunday afternoon, I was home alone doing some work and it hit that time of day where the rumbles started coming on. The fridge was bare, but I remembered seeing the menu for Zen somewhere online. Yelpers recommended the mango chicken, and I was excited to see it on the lunch menu. I ordered that with brown rice, a spring roll, and an order of steamed broccoli.
The delivery was super quick, and I immediately dug in. My eyes brightened when I saw the gigantic pieces of mango hanging out with the fake chicken (is it tofu, soy protein, what is it??). I was weary of the chicken because I hate the texture of tofu, but when I took my first bite I was pleasantly surprised. It was chewy, and had a nice texture (not as nice as chicken, but I survived). The steamed broccoli was delicious, as well as the spring roll.
I really enjoyed my first official vegetarian meal, and will definitely be hitting them up again soon to try something else. Maybe next time I'll take a stroll and stop in to check out the tiny headquarters that supposedly only seat a very limited number of people.

Yes I have experienced Vegetarian food before. In fact, my boyfriend & I carried out this plan where we do "Meatless Monday" where we devote one day a week to being vegetarians in order to cut back on foods that aren't good for us and to save animals.
Do you have the address to this restaurant? I'd like to check it out since, I live in Brooklyn.
I'm not vegan/vegetarian but I do love vegetarian food because they certainly know how to cook those nice veggies in so many varieties.
I have yet to eat a really delicious vegetarian Chinese dish. They're always disappointing, so Chinese food has become one of my least favorite types of cuisine.
I love to eat vegetables.
Foodswings!! Somewhere in Brooklyn, don't remember where I only ate there once but their food is delicious. They even have vegan milkshakes! :D If you ever find yourself in Jersey, stop by Veggie Heaven. Its also a Vegetarian chinese restaurant, their fake meat is the best out of any I've tried.
it was probably TVP
anyway, I just went to a vegetarian (mostly Chinese) restaurant in Chicago last night called the Loving Hut and got the lemon tofu

I'm a non-vegetarian, but I was vegetarian for two years and even now I don't eat that much meat. That said, when I was a vegetarian I didn't eat tofu either! I didn't like the texture. I've never tried seitan but I think I would try it. I just ate a lot of fruits and vegetables and beans and rice. I liked it. I felt really good and healthy, but I've never really been into junk food so I'm sure that helps.
Now: "I was weary of the chicken because I hate the texture of tofu" Sorry, this drives me crazy. I think you meant "leery" or even "wary" but not weary.
Leery - Suspicious or distrustful; wary.Wary - On guard, watchful, characterized by caution.Weary - Physically or mentally fatigued.
I've seen a LOT of people make this same mistake which is the only reason it drives me so bonkers, it's almost like the word is taking on a new meaning that it doesn't need to have since there are already other similar words for it!Anyway, sorry if that's offensive. :/

Ahhh, my friends and I walked past this place after the Gay Pride Parade!! I wanted to go in and eat so badly...but we had already eaten pizza.
A lot of things can be vegetarian or made vegetarian: Indian food, Mexican food, Italian food, etc. It doesn't have to be a special dish or anything. Pizza with vegetables is also vegetarian. Egg salad sandwiches are vegetarian. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are vegetarian. And etc, etc.
I've been a vegetarian for 5 years and I can honestly say that the closest I've come to a Chinese dish being deliberately vegetarian (not counting spring rolls, etc) was a Morningstar Farms TV dinner (although I have had Chinese restaurant substitute chicken for tofu in dishes like orange chicken). That restaurant sounds delicious, though I live in California, not New York. :(
I'm not a vegetarian but I do like to vegetarian food for the soy products like mock chicken and meat.
Mango (mock) chicken and brown rice... a nice combination. Since I want to encourage my daughter to eat more vegetables, we have our vegetarian days where we try out some vegetarian food.
