  • Stay a Foodie, Drop the Weight

It's summertime and I know a lot of us foodies are still working hard to get that beach body. So, I'm here to offer some friendly foodie-to-foodie advice:

It's all about routine (not poutine-- that certainly won't help you) and putting in less calories than you are burning. What my dad does is really quite incredible and it's something I am training myself to do, too. For over 20 years he has been doing this:

In the morning, he runs on an empty stomach. He comes home after 30 minutes to one glass of ice cold water. Then he moves on to his cup of coffee (black, but if you can't tolerate black coffee try nonfat milk and a small amount of sugar or sweetener). With his coffee he eats one banana.

After his breakfast, he goes back to drinking ice cold water. The banana holds him for at least 4 hours at which point he has his lunch. Usually, lunch consists of a sandwich with any of the following ingredients: low sodium sliced chicken breast or turkey breast, lettuce, tomato, avocado, swiss cheese. Sometimes he alters this and has smoked salmon, swiss cheese, and tomato on half a bagel. He drinks more water with his lunch.

Dinner occurs about 6 or so hours later and consists of either fish, seafood, or chicken. He eats almost every vegetable available and is sure to get a good variety in his daily diet. For carbohydrate energy, he'll eat some whole wheat pasta or a baked potato. In addition to more water, he'll also drink some wine.

I think the most important tip my dad can give is this: don't cook with too much salt, if any at all. You can choose to go cold turkey on salt and your taste buds will adjust in a maximum of two weeks. When dining out, say "no added salt, please" to the waiter to ensure that the chef keeps his/her hands out of the bowl of salt.

    Good luck, fellow foodies!

Do you have any good food advice when it comes to staying slim?

Dang... No snacks in between? I don't know how he does it. I would be starving all the time. Coffee and a banana just doesn't seem like a good breakfast... especially after finishing a run.

Wow...more power to him, but there's no way I could get by with just a banana and coffee for breakfast! I usually tend to eat the most at breakfast, and have two or three small meals after. Then again, I'm not exactly in great shape myself, so I probably shouldn't be talking!

    I can't exercise if I haven't eaten a good-sized meal beforehand. I black out.

His diet wouldn't provide me enough calories to function properly.

I have lost weight eating more than your father does by a mile. (Or at least, by a couple of small meals)

So I think I'll stick with that.

My first advice is to start slimming for the summertime in the winter time (you know, around Christmas). It takes more than a couple weeks to drop 10 pounds (if you drop it in a week you're doing it wrong). What your dad does didn't sound healthy at first, but if it works for him and he's incredibly healthy, then go him. I just know I would pass out because of the lack of sugars and calories his diet consists of.

The one thing I do is I eat a small breakfast, have a mid-day snack between dance classes (honey or a granola thin), have a small lunch, eat another snack (preferably fruit), and then have or skip dinner depending on how I feel. I also eat sweets (small amounts - I never go overboard any more). With dance getting intense, I burn about 1500 more calories than I put in, which is key. =)

Although it is as simple as calories in being lower than calories out, you must understand that everyone is different. If you are exercising more, you can eat more. If you are exercising less, you should eat less. Keep in mind that he likely did not suddenly change his diet to this, but rather gradually trained his body to be able to do this. And lastly, if what are you doing is working for you, then that is great and you should continue that. If you do hit a plateau, then you can change up your habits by either increasing exercise or changing your diet.

Why does he choose ice cold water? I've heard that cold water actually slows your metabolism and digestion.

I drink room-temperature water either way because cold water hurts my teeth and throat, but when I heard about the metabolism thing, I thought it was really interesting. What are your thoughts on it?

i don't know about anyone else but 1 damn banana is NOT going to hold me over until lunch. -___-

  • ohbigfattie@xanga

maybe i'm just a fatass but i get hungry after a few hours..i eat 5-6 small meals throughout the day.

  • ivarahBharavi@xanga

just eat tons of fruits and veggies, as well as nuts for protein! and get a little of everything in your diet. many people are afraid of carbs and fats but you do need grains and lipids in your diet. they're apart of the four essential nutrients!

  • IHeldMyBreath@xanga

I can't help but feel like your dad's eating regimen is unhealthy. For someone who exercises regularly, he should know that the more you burn, the more you need to replenish your energy.

  • ms_guided_youth@xanga

I am going to try your advise about the salt. I can hold out for 2 weeks, if they REALLY adjust. My BP will thank you.

  • feelslikejuly@xanga

A banana lasts me about an hour. I could probably eat three bananas for breakfast.

  • thisiswhereItellyoueverything@xanga

I used to never eat breakfast or just have a tiny breakfast like your dad, but it never helped me because I was always starving by lunch time.

For the past three weeks I've made myself eat breakfast every morning - scrambled eggs with peppers and onions, a small glass of orange juice, a mug of coffee. Then I'll have a snack of a banana or a greek yogurt. Lunch is a turkey sandwich or a fish taco, dinner is the same size as lunch. Sometimes I even snack in the evenings on air-popped popcorn. I only drink coffee/water/tea throughout the day. I bike everywhere I go because I don't have a car or a driver's license, but I sometimes do extra bike rides for exercise.

I've lost 6.6 lbs in the past three weeks, and I don't feel deprived.

I'd be starving if I ate the way your dad eats.

I also feel like the trick for me so far is to have a small dinner so I'm satisfied but not full, and when I wake up in the morning I'm hungry for breakfast. It makes it more enjoyable to eat breakfast in the morning. If I go to sleep full I wake up full and then breakfast feels like a chore.

  • jigglysnake@xanga

thats such a bad idea. Not eating breakfast bloats you and makes your body starve, making you fatter in the long run. also, it makes you binge at night because you're still hungry.
second off, working out on an empty stomach (unless you carb binged late the night before) is a bad idea because youre burning MUSCLE not fat.
third, theres no fiber in that diet, so your dad probably shits blood.
and lastly, theres no protein in his sugar-only banana brunch thing, so it will go right through you and it won't hold anyone else for 4 hours, maybe it holds him because hes a buddhist monk, but without protein, fruit wont hold you

  • MiriamBeth@xanga

I love coffee, the less creamer and sugar the better (but not straight black). It can usually keep me full until lunch.

  • MiriamBeth@xanga

Also, I've never been able to eat breakfast. Ever since elementary school anything eaten in the mornings would end up thrown up before making it to school. Doctors say it's in my head, but whatever. I don't over eat at lunch or dinner, so I feel that some people are unable to wake up and eat properly right away.

  • PaulaMillers@xanga

I like to eat banana when I was breaking train at gyms. it feel better take only just water for a while :)

wow. mr healthy. i probably eat double or triple that. and definately dont work out daily. i might have to copy this i love my body. but really its kind of cool hearing how others do it. :3

  • LiquidityOfSelf@xanga

@xKateElizabethx@xanga - Your body has to work to heat up ice water, so it revs your metabolism and burns a few calories
