I'm Addicted to Coke
I am a very tiny person. I’m 5’1 (and a quarter) and about 110 pounds. Two years ago, I started to put on a lot of weight. I gained about 22 pounds and, because I was always so small, it really showed.
I actually received a lot of compliments. My family and friends liked that I had a little meat on my bones. My doctor said I looked healthier. Even my boyfriend was beside himself with excitement because my chest, thighs and behind grew, practically overnight. Everyone was happy…except for me.
I hated the weight I had gained. After weeks of looking at myself in the mirror with disgust, I finally decided I had to do something about it. I knew joining a gym would be useless, because gym memberships have never been used in the past. I simply despise exercise, and I knew my hatred for any sort of physical exertion would overcome my willingness to better myself. Therefore, I chose to change my diet. I’ve heard that diet counts for more than exercise, anyway (I really did!).
I gave up the one thing I loved most in the world – Coca Cola. Up until about a year ago, I consumed Coke like it was water. I would drink almost four cans of the stuff a day, cherishing it, appreciating it, loving it. When others ordered alcohol, I stuck to my beloved Coke. I couldn’t be happier with our relationship – until it stabbed me in the back.
When I couldn’t understand why I was on my way to heffer territory, my boyfriend and I sat down and figured out that I was consuming almost 600 calories a day from Coke. That’s 4,200 calories a week, and 16,800 calories a month – in beverages alone. Not okay. A can of Diet Coke, however, only has 1.3 calories. Yeah, I’m sticking with the Diet stuff.
I had to do this cold turkey. Like a long-time smoker who literally cannot just have one cigarette a week, I quit drinking Coke all at once. I had tried this once before, years ago, and decided to simply cut back. My “one cup at dinner” quickly turned into a throwing-in-of-the-towel completely. This time, I smartened up and rid my entire house of it.
My boyfriend has always drank Diet Coke. I have always referred to it as poison. Whenever a waiter brought us our drinks when we'd go out to restaurants, I was always given the diet, and he was given the regular. Not occasionally, not sometimes…always.
And now I have crossed over to the other side. The, perhaps-not-healthier-but-skinnier-nonetheless side. Yes I, Jennifer, am an avid orderer and drinker of Diet Coke.
I have heard a lot of controversy about Diet Coke (hell, I used to spread the word about it before I contradicted myself and switched over). To make it taste less gross, Diet Coke has a sweetener called Aspartame. To this day, anti-Aspartame fighters wonder (loudly) if the FDA should have ever approved it. I read that this particular sweetener is 200 times sweeter than table sugar. That’s a huge number, right there.
Advocates campaigning for Aspartame to be removed from foods and beverages argue that there is a connection between the sweetener and brain tumors, brain legions, and lymphoma. The FDA, however, shoots down these accusations. Officials describe Aspartame as "one of the most thoroughly tested and studied food additives the agency has ever approved" and its safety as "clear cut." My cousin’s boyfriend, who is a doctor completing his residency to become a brain surgeon, told me that I have a greater risk of having a stroke if I drink Diet Coke. But he's just a brain surgeon. It's not like he's a rocket scientist or anything.
My friend, Steve, who received his degree in Health, told me that Diet Coke is not really diet, at all. Apparently it produces an increase in insulin, blocking the breakdown of fat, and causing your body to store this unrecognizable new sugar as fat.
I’m not going to tell anyone what to drink. All I know is, with a tweak to my diet (Diet Coke, 2% milk, and no more morning bagels), I shed my unwanted fat. I don’t see what Steve is talking about. The whole stroke thing, however, that’s pretty freaking scary. I’m just going to hope that the FDA knows what they’re talking about and keeps me safe.
Do you love Coca Cola, or something equally as fattening but delicious? Did you have to give it up? Do you ever try to lose weight by eating or drinking something that people say isn't good for you?

Personally, I think your cousin's boyfriend is full of shit.
Diet Coke is nasty. I lurve regular Coke (don't drink it anymore, but I assume they didn't change it), but their diet stuff always leaves the most god-awful aftertaste in my mouth. Diet Pepsi, all the way. Diet Dr. Pepper is the bestest though.
The only Coke I like now is Mexican glass-bottled Coke. Its been appearing in Wal-Marts around the South and I love it! They use real cane sugar and less artificial ingredients.
The only coke i can manage ever to drink is diet dr pepper & that is rare for me to drink but its delicious!
I only drink water & green tea ive always had a problem with the carbonation from sodas.i'm sure diet coke is bad for you. but i like the way it tastes so i drink it :P
I've lost over 11 pounds and counting and I still drink and eat what I want. It is just that I do everything in moderation and exercise a lot. I love coke <3
@Grtt@xanga - you should probably do the research before you say something like that.
Diet soda has a definitive link to a greater risk of stroke. Simply google "diet soda stroke"
I'm not a soda drinker, never really was, unless it's carbonated water.
Hmm, I just don't like the taste of artificial sweeteners, and I've heard that the insulin it produces makes you crave sweets more, but I've never drank enough to know if that's true or not. I used to drink pop a few times a week, but now I drink it maybe twice a month. I think it really is an addiction - and the less you drink it the less you crave it.
Honestly, the only times I've lost a significant amount of weight is when I was sick. People say if you lose weight like that you'll just gain it back, but I've kept just about every pound (like 8) off.
As of a few days ago I'm trying to keep 60-70% of my diet fruits and veggies. I already hardly ever eat meat, so it shouldn't be too hard. I've lost maybe a pound so far, but I think it's more detox weight than fat loss.
Diet cherry coke is my favorite (+vodka). But I don't drink soda very much at all. I drink water like a fish.
i've given up on coke awhile ago, in fact, i've stopped drinking all sodas. couldn't stand the carbonation and sugar content, and diet coke is just bleh.
back in the 1960's or 70's they found out that the coke industry actually put cocaine in their drink, so maybe you are addicted to cocaine.
I gave up drinking soda everyday, nothing but soda...to drinking it maybe a couple of times on the weekends and have lost 10 lbs in about 2 weeks, and it's stayed off. It's not really noticeable but it's better than nothing. I am in love with soda but surprisingly it's been easy giving it up.
@rusethemuse@xanga - That would also help her drop a ton of weight! And make for a cooler story.
FDA's not wrong in this. However, if you do things moderately you're ok. If you drink 4 cans of Coke a day for the next how many years, you'll get Osteoporosis in your old age. Having excess Aspartame ... ?
That's something for people to find out themselves. Some people think they're drinking Diet Coke already so binge on other food product & gain weight.
My grandma is addicted to regular coke. She refuses to switch to diet or coke zero. She's almost ninety, very old, and very frail, but she will do whatever it takes to make sure she gets her coke! (She's also a thin as a rail... must be where I got it from...)
It's important to stay educated on the dangers. http://youtu.be/pvFRLIjOLOU
@ask_ashleyyy@xanga - Do you notice how every time she posts something on here it's about dieting and what not to eat on a date? Really? She's really going to talk about what not to eat on an 'i really like food' site? I think she's a bit confused. Also the original recipe of cola is actually pretty healthy if you take out the cocaine, the carbonation and sugar :) But of course people love sugar carbonation and some even like cocaine...but that's been taken out years ago:) .....so they say.
I'm Addicted to flamin' hot cheetos.
They cause shedding of the digestive tract...
I used to eat about 3 dollar bags a day...
Ended up sick and had to give em up cold turkey for a year... :(
After that year I started up again... Just as bad, if not worse... Ended up in the E.R. with Bleeding :'(
Gave it up for 40 days... now I eat them once a month if that...
Never effected my weight but did cause stomach bloating and lot's of pain.
I am addicted to chocolate!!!!
@rusethemuse@xanga - Hahahaha I've never made that connection. I guess it's because I also see her posts on Datingish about how she's the cool girlfriend who points out other hot girls to her boyfriend, or how she's so cool because she goes to strip clubs. And I will eat whatever the hell I want on a first date! Hahaha
The only time I ever drink coke is with Jameson and that doesn't happen that often...less than two times a month. I've been drinking only coffee and water since I moved out on my own. Its cheaper to buy a bag of coffee beans than to keep up with my old coke habit. I could even spring for the more expensive Blue Mountain coffee beans and still be spending less than the cost of coke.
Coke Zero is all I drink now. I LOVE it and it's not bitter like diet coke.
I'm addicted to Mt. Dew! But it will do horrible things to your teeth. But luckily my teeth are still fine. And very white, I might add.
I'm also 5'0 105 lbs. and I wish all the Mt. Dew I drink would help me put on a extra 20 lbs, maybe I'll swith to coke. I also don't like any other soda. None, except Dr. Pepper on rare occasions when I decide to drink Captain.
its not the calories in coke.
its the 52 grams of sugar.
to keep a healthy balance in weight you shouldn't consume more than 45 grams of sugar daily.
@Grtt@xanga - Diet Dr Pepper IS the best tasting mainstream diet soda!
You can enjoy just about any food and drink as long as it is in moderation, I think. Although I have not given up any food/drink that is "bad for me," I have dramatically cut back on many of the junk food items in exchange for more fruits and vegetables to have a healthier diet. I say forget about giving up the "bad foods" because life's too short to worry about every morsel you consume. Enjoy it but just don't overdo it.
So switching to diet worked for you? I had to do some research on the diet drink once. I learned that while you are cutting out the sugar, the body still craves the glucose that it feels it was cheated from the aspartame, so it causes you to crave sugar and overindulge later, put simply. It also leads to diabetes.
I gained weight after quitting coca-cola :(. Of course, I also quit smoking at the same time....
