Naomi Campbell V. Cadbury
Cadbury recently launched the advertisement above to promote their Bliss chocolate bar. Naomi Campbell told the Independent UK: "I am shocked. It's upsetting to be described as chocolate, not just for me, but for all black women and black people. I do not find any humor in this. It is insulting and hurtful." According to the Independent, Campbell is considering every option including a lawsuit.
Black rights groups are supporting Campbell and are calling for a boycott of all Cadbury products. Simon Woolley, of UK’s Operation Black Vote, told The Daily Mail: "Racism in the playground starts with black children being called 'chocolate bar.'"
Her mother has even stated: "I'm deeply upset by this racist advert. Do these people think they can insult black people and we just take it? This is the 21st century, not the 1950s. Shame on Cadbury."
A spokesperson for Kraft Foods (the company owns Cadbury) revealed that all the billboards featuring the ad have been removed and they never intended it to be offensive. The spokesperson stated: "It was certainly never our intention to cause any offense and the campaign itself is a light-hearted take on the social pretensions of Cadbury Dairy Milk Bliss."
What do you think? Do you think the advertisement was racially motivated? Would you find this ad to be offensive?

i have to wonder if the real trigger was "move over."
and maybe "diva."
I think they were calling her diva.... not chocolate. Im pretty sure she's known for being a diva. These groups sound dumb as fuck. I hate people that play the race card.
...wouldn't Cadbury need her permission to publish her name on all these ads anyway?
I did not see anything racist in this, I thought it was just relating to Naomi Campbell being a raging bitch. I mean...isn't she the one that freaks out and beats the hell out of random people? I freaking hate when people pull the race card because they got their panties in a bunch over something else.
This makes me want to slam my head in a door...or maybe just Naomi Campbell's. It's obviously a little jab at her notoriety at being a diva and apparently, it's perfectly accurate. But they forgot the nuts...

i didn't even see it as racist, i just saw the diva comparison. cause she is kind of a raging bitch. but i can see the racism too, and i understand why people would be upset.
Does Naomi eat chocolates?
@MangoWOW@xanga - this. this times a hundred-thousand-million-trillion-infinity.
I didn't read this as racist, I read it as Naomi is a known diva (she throws cell phones at peoples' heads if she doesn't get her way, helloooo) and they are saying that this chocolate is even more diva-licious. **shakes head** I wouldn't blame her for suing if she was suing because they used her name without permission, but she's taking this to a level at which it was never intended. I understand why the black community may be upset, but they are reading entirely too far into this imo.
omg people take things so personally these days, its just abit of fun for cryig out loud... seriously? a lawsuit?
@syedanoor@xanga - naomi campbell did not copyright the name naomi
@cindyhs@xanga - Obviously. But there is the basis of a lawsuit if they are using her reference for advertising purposes without her permission. Oprah's name isn't necessarily copyrighted either, but I'm pretty sure Travis McCoy got her permission to use her name in his song "Billionaire", for example.
What?!
When I read this, I didn't think about Naomi Campbell as a black person but as the diva she is.
Way to stay relevant Naomi. For shame...
Um... I don't get it. Or why it is an issue?
It wasn't offensive, people are too sensitive. They were not comparing her to chocolate. They were comparing the chocolate to her diva status. People really need to grow up and stop saying everything is racist.
@MangoWOW@xanga - that's what my initial thought was when i read the ad.. race didn't even come into my mind until i read the blog..
pshh black people always gotta be in the spotlight about everything that has to do with race.. they'll find every reason to make it a race issue... oops did i offend anyone?
apparently naomi didn't get it.. and i guess she doesn't know or think she's a diva... yup throwing phones at people is nothing wrong nor acting like a diva.. naomi you're dumb!
@miss_olivia_cullen@xanga - i totally agree
I find Naomi Campbell far more offensive than the ad. If the Cadbury Dairy Milk Bliss bar were available in my area, I would be eagerly buying several.
I'm sorry, but I think it's a little ridiculous for her to make that jump. They were obviously referring to the decadence and scene-stealing appeal of the candy, not its color. But I'm not black, so this comment must be racist.
Personally, I'd be flattered if someone compared me to chocolate. If someone compared me to chocolate, I'd take it to mean I was sweet (obviously) and good-looking (who doesn't think chocolate looks good?!) Naomi just wants to whine. And money.
good, more cadbury for me!
Seriously, how do people even get that from these ads? She's a diva. It has nothing to do with her race, she just is. Nitpicking like that is ridiculous. And how is "chocolate bar" an insult? What? Like I'm pretty sure that if you call a kid "chocolate bar" and try to make it sound insulting... they will still just look at you like "wtf? O.o".
