McDonald's Makeover: Goodbye, Red Roof!
Your local McDonald's may not have a red roof for much longer. In fact, it probably won't look anything like the McDonald's you have come to know so well once the makeover comes to your town.
McDonald's is investing over $1 billion to change up the looks of 140,000 locations throughout the country. And yes, billion, not million.
The company is hoping that a fresh, new look will attract customers more than their typical red and yellow theme they have been sporting for years and years.
In addition to getting rid of the staple red roof, the following changes are going to be made:
- focusing on earth tones rather than red and yellow
- no more fiberglass or steel chairs
- more drive-through windows will be available
- no more fluorescent lighting
- addition of flat screen tv's
For more information, check out the original article on The Huffington Post here.
Do you think the redesign efforts will prove successful? Will they attract you?

I am sure on hot days like today, I will only go there to take my son to the Playland. I'll get a frozen wannabe latte and a Happy Meal that my son won't eat to justify being there.
I already
@Erika_Steele@xanga - Funny... I was just talking about that. There's almost no point in picking up the happy meal because slide > food and you have to feed them when you get home anyway.
It's the menu that attracts me to McDonald's, not the logo or the premises. As long as the place is clean and pleasant, it's fine with me.
The new look will be nice, but it's not going to make the food taste better (or healthier for that matter).
I'll miss the old look.... but it's not like I go there much anyway. I tend to try and avoid the place as much as I can
They've already begun changing them up here. They are looking very 'modern', dark brown and tan/gold accents. Whatever. It's still McDonald's and still disgusting.
I've been told that the colours red and yellow stimulates hunger :S So much for that
You're right.. red supposedly reflects hunger and yellow reflect happiness.
[Think about it.. Arbys, Wendys, Chick Fil A, Burger King....]
They've already changed some mcdonalds here in Tijuana. They look actually really cool, with a more lounge like style.
My Mcdonald's here in Pennsylvania was torn down and totally rebuilt back in November. It definitely looks much more attractive. One thing I do think is a little odd though; they have two speakers to place your order, but still only one window to pick up your order. I don't see the effectiveness there.
Where I live, most of the roofs are already green... but I live in the mountains, so most businesses are more earthy than usual. And @katrinawinderful@xanga ..that is how the ones here, and back home in Indiana were. 2 speakers, 1 window. Seems silly, because they still had you wait till they got the order of the other person done. Maybe it was just to help divide the lines and not allow a line to build up around the entire block durring lunch rush? But like I said, it still seems silly :P
I thought red and yellow was iconic for mac. Hmm.
NOOOO! NOOOOH! ANYTHING BUT THAT!
OH THE HUMANITY!
I don't think McDonald's needs a makeover to attract customers.
Maybe the nation is finally starting to realize that fast food isn't good for them and that's why people aren't going there?
It's all about the health-buzz. Red and yellow, Ronald McDonald, happy meals - all evidence of a fast food empire targeting children and, as we all know, childhood obesity was so 90s.
New colors, new seating... Mickey D's is going chic. And that certainly can't be as unhealthy as the old Mac we know and love. Out with the old, in with the new.
no....still unhealthy...sorry
In Malaysia, McDonald's have started changing its theme colour for a few years now. McDonald's restaurants now look like this all over my country. http://j.mp/iAIm0w
I've been to one that was just built last year with this sort of theme. It's pretty cool, actually. Almost has a coffee shop sort of feel.
Whoaaaaa
@SillyHelena@xanga - They all look like that here in Australia. Have done for quite a while. I can't even remember seeing a red one.
Cuz TVs will make the consumers thinner?
All the maccas has changed here in Australia a couple years ago already, its more cleaner and doesnt look like a place you'd consider fast food. it matures the place up more.
@SillyHelena@xanga - Wow! It's lovely for a mcdonalds! I hope ours look like that.
@serious_this_time@xanga - exactly !
now mcdonald's will be busier and even more unhealthy. adding tv's encourages customers to stay longer and therefore buy more. i can't imagine wanting to watch a sports game on tv and being like where should we go... ohh mcdonald's!
I think they should stick to the design we grew up with and not add tv's... we (americans as a whole) watch tv too much as it is !
obviously this is not the solution to our obesity problem.
I haven't eaten McDonald's (or any fast food for that matter) for years. This definitely won't "attract me" to their restaurant, unless their "food" is getting a facelift as well. I don't have kids yet, but even if there is a playland or whatever, they won't see the inside of it if it requires eating there as well.
