Strange "Food" Memories From Childhood
Let's face it, we all had super silly things we did when it came to food in our childhood. Some of them funny and others just straight up disgusting.
Unfortunately, the majority of my weird food memories from childhood are more on the disgusting side. I guess I was just one adventurous little girl! I can't believe I ate half of the things I did (neither can the kitty above!). Yuck!
One of my most vivid food memories is from when I was around four or five years old. My neighbor (also an Ali, but she spelled it Alley) and I were on our back porch (as we lived in a duplex) and we were coloring with chalk. We were both chewing bubble gum, but decided that we were hungry. So Alley went inside quick and came back out with a bag of nacho cheese Doritos. For reasons now unknown to me, we thought it would be a good idea to try eating the chips using one side of our mouth and keeping the gum on the other. Didn't work out so well! But that didn't stop us. We continued to chew the gum and chip mixture and to top it off colored our tongues with the chalk. My mom ended up coming onto the porch and made us spit it all out. Looking back I really don't blame her.
Another memory I have is very astonishing to me now. If you know me, you know I have a huge fear of spiders. I see one and I am out of there! Apparently little kid-Ali had no qualms with spiders whatsoever. So much in fact that my mom would often find me ripping the legs off of daddy long legs (I feel so bad! I guess I didn't realize what I was doing at the time) and once in a while I would try eating the legs. I think I only tried eating them a couple times as memory serves, and I never actually swallowed because I didn't like the way it felt in my mouth. I want to barf thinking about the fact that I ever did any of this.
I'm sure everyone has been in a situation where they were dared to do something. In my elementary school days, it was serious business, especially if you were triple dog dared! Well, in this particular situation third grade-me found myself in a triple dog dare and knew I couldn't back out. What did the dare entail? Eating a worm. Before I knew it, along with a handful of other kids, a live worm was sliding down the back of my throat. I remember being really nervous afterwards thinking that it was going to live inside me and I went home crying that day. Luckily we have pretty strong stomach acids, and my mom had to remind me of this to get me to calm down.
One last memory. Remember graph paper? Well, if you ever get your hands on the brown graph paper, give a piece a try. It tastes like Reese's Cereal...or at least my elementary school self thought so.
What are some of your silly, funny, or disgusting food memories from childhood?

My siblings and I dared each other (and sometimes bet money) to eat a random mix of food at the dinner table. We called it goosefood, and we still joke about it as adults. Some of the combinations were absolutely disgusting and nausea-inducing. The worst goosefood I can remember eating was a chocolate chip cookie with pizza sauce. It doesn't sound that bad, but it truly was awful. I almost threw up at the table.
I also remember eating a watermelon rind for a dollar in middle school. It tasted like grass and coconut, and it made me sick for three days.
I used to eat these little green pods that I found in a particular type of plant that grew along the landscaping in front of our house. I wish I knew what plant it was. I called the pods "buttons", and they tasted pretty good. I never got noticeably sick from them, but I'd like to know if they were toxic and affected me in ways I don't know about.
I'd eat paper sucker sticks after finishing a sucker. I still do that to this day.
But the worst thing I can ever recall eating was a piece of jello after my friend chewed it up and spat it on the driveway.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle pies with vanilla pudding power!
My neighbour and I used to pick flowers from some random's house and suck out the pollen. That is.. until the owners found out.
remember those smelly crayons? they smelled so good, and the girl who lived across the street from me convinced me that they tasted like their scents. only you couldn't eat the crayon, so we would kind of chew little shavings off of them, and then spit them out. one time, we spit the shavings in my bathroom sink, my dad found it and flipped out. i think that was the end of my crayon eating days. they didn't really taste like anything anyway.
i didn't actually eat these things, but i used to chew on the collar and sleeves of my shirts so badly, that i would actually chew holes in them, and my shirts would have big, wet saliva spots on them. yuck. i don't know what my deal was! i also used to chew and suck on my hair, convinced that it tasted like macaroni and cheese....
oh, and i also used to chomp on wooden pencils pretty hardcore; i'd pretty much chew the paint off and be spitting out the pieces of paint, and be left with a bumpy pencil.
@Rob_of_the_Sky@xanga - Oh my god! I remember those and I kind of wish I had one right now! : )
I have memories of eating printer paper, leaves and sand. I also only ate cucumber sandwiches if they had salt in them. 19-year-old me things "what the fuck".
I'm also fairly sure I ate a spider once. I also liked sucking the ink out of pens.
You are on brave girl haha... I've eaten grass...and paper...but that doesn't even come close to what you ate as a kid lol.
i loved to chew sand.
...i still love the feeling of it in my mouth. *shiftyeyes*I remember when I ate lipstick when I was a toddler, like I just bit off the top half and chewed it because it looked like candy, but it tasted gross and I tried to spit it out
when I was a slightly older kid, probably 8 years old, I took this lipstick I found in the bathroom cabinet and I used it like a tube of paint to paint my face like a cirque du soleil clown
then I'd find roly poly bugs in the garden path and torture them, by doing no other than, rolling them into a ball so they got dizzy and laugh at them:D I didn't eat bugs, just tortured them
I was fascinated with ants because when I saw ants, I'd sometimes try to get them lost, so they can't follow the ant in front of them, because I either blocked their path with something, so they had to divert their direction, or I wiped the scent away so that they lost track. I was an evil kid
the weirdest thing I ate was margarine with sugar sprinkled on top sandwiches, but it wasn't that weird after I saw al bundy eat a tang sandwich.
in elementary school, there was this huge berry bush that grew on the other side of the fence, but poked through to the playground. i remember always having to be the lookout for teachers while my friends ate the berries. i was always such a mom and tried to get them to stop eating the berries or to at least take them to the water fountain and wash them first lol. i do remember trying them a couple times and they were pretty good, but i still have no idea what they were. they looked somewhat like blackberries except they were green.
Sucking the nectar out from a honeysuckle flower. I remember all the kids would do it; there was a special way to pull out the stem so you just got the sweet part.
I used to chew pea pods. They're actually quite sweet. I also remember shoving a cheese puff up my nose...My aunt wasn't best pleased when she saw it XD
I remember a friend of mine licking PVA glue and saying it tasted like sour milk.
@methodElevated@xanga - the worst 'goosefood' i ever ae was a piece of meat (probably beef) with blue cupcake frosting on it. same reaction as the cookie + sauce combo. yak.
once we dared my friend to lick dried bird poop on the drive-way. he threw up. we got in trouble
Eating paper, leaves, trying to eat coins, eating sugar/flour/salt out of the container, not eating fast enough to finish lunch in elementary school and always throwing out half of it, picking up dropped food and eating it etc...
Paper, grass, flowers, pet food, ants
.... I guess the usual?
