Top 8 School Lunches/Foods I Really Miss
I recently made a post about a school in Chicago banning lunches from home. Though the reasoning is that the school lunch is supposed to be healthy, I started reminiscing about how not healthy my school lunches were.
But then I found myself craving those meals again in a strange, strange way. I can't believe I've gone so many years without them! Maybe some of you are enjoying them as I write this, and for that I am slightly jealous!
Though I can't lie, my memory has seemed to glorify these foods. When I really think about it, I can recall some yucky memories with them, too. But I still crave them nonetheless!
1) Rolls
My high school's lunch rolls were absolutely the best. My memory wants to tell me they were perfect every time, but then I remember that every once in a while they were a bit soggy, sometimes the bottoms super soggy. But I still miss them like crazy!
2) Chocolate Chip Cookies
Another food from my high school: the cookies. SO GOOD. This is probably the only item on this list that memory serves were perfect every time. I always made sure I had that extra 25 cents (or was it 50? hmm..) for a cookie. Sometimes when I'm visiting my parents I'm tempted to have my little brother buy a couple for me and bring them home.
3) Dinosaur Pasta
This brings me back to elementary school days. Does anyone else remember dinosaur pasta?? It was the best! I'm sure it tasted pretty much like spaghettios but with dinosaur shapes, but I think they were a little different. Too bad I haven't had it in over a decade so I can't quite say what the difference was. Sometimes they were a little more water-y than usual, which would really bum me out.
4) Mozzarella Sticks
Oh, how I wish they gave you more than four sticks. And a tad more marinara on the side. In actuality, these were probably just mediocre sticks. But I do remember every once in a while getting that one stick that was perfectly crisp, perfectly cheesy, and perfectly juicy. Then again I also recall the fake-out sticks where all the cheese oozed out while cooking so you pretty much had a tube of breadcrumbs. That really sucked.
5) Tacos
Specifically elementary school tacos. Another one of my favorites! There was something strange about their taste though, and I have a very vivid memory of thinking they tasted like cotton candy back then (not so sure that would appeal to me now...). And every once in a while there was that hard piece of meat or whatever it was which would really ruin the entire thing for me. After that bite I wouldn't eat the rest.
6) Turkey, Gravy, and Mashed Potatoes
So I never liked the turkey part of this meal (it was disgusting, trust me), but I loved the gravy and potatoes. I especially loved getting a roll and dipping the roll in the potatoes and gravy. Yum!
7) Italian Dunkers
For anyone else who has Italian dunkers, you know it's just cheese on top of breadsticks that you dip in marinara sauce. Pretty much the same thing as a mozzarella stick but in a different form. But somehow it seemed so different. I hated when you got the batch with the crooked cheese, so one of your sticks had hardly any on it at all. And the lunch ladies wouldn't let you choose which ones you wanted! Ugh.
8) French Fries/Tater Tots
I really, really liked my high school's french fries. They were hardly ever undercooked or burnt or over-salty. Friday fries were the best though. They were zesty or spicy or whatever you want to call it. I remember getting ketchup and some ranch from the salad bar to dip them in. Every once in a while they would have tater tots instead, and you best believe I made sure to get them when they were available. Those things went fast!
What school lunch foods do you love/miss?

wow great school 0_0
the best thing at my school was the .........chocolate milk?AHH.
I was, like, one of the few kids who LOVED school lunch.
I agree with #1, #2, #4, #5, and #9. We never got any of the other stuff you mentioned at my school.
I loved the pizza, and Sloppy Joe. :3
@ohhpanicc@xanga - lol, oh yeah. That too. I couldn't stand when they ran out and we had to drink regular milk. =[
at my high school, we had buffalo chicken sandwiches. yum.
i also miss school lunch tacos.
I loved the Arby's cart we had in our high school cafeteria. Oh, and the variety of stuffed soft pretzels we had were awesome.
I never got any, but everyone else loved the cookies you could get on big cookie day every week. They were the size of dessert plates. Healthy.
the chicken patties were the BEST. for sure.
BOSCO STICKS. Pretty sure they're kind of like the Italian Dunkers you mentioned, only it was more like a breadstick with cheese on the inside and you got marinara sauce with 'em. Soooooo good.
Also I really loved my high schools burgers. Omnomnomnom.
CHEESE ZOMBIES.
I don't know if every school had these but my elementary and middle school had them (Then I moved out of district for HS.)
They were pretty much bread rolls filled with a hunt of cheese that melted when you cooked them.
I miss those.
the thing i really really miss are the smiley faced french fries/taters in elementary and middle school. they always made me so happy! :)
I stopped eating school lunch after they had miss marked shrimp puffs as chicken puffs. School lunch almost killed me. :c
My high school had awesome cookies, too. And we had a wrap cart where they had these huge tortillas that they'd load up with whatever lunchmeat and toppings you chose. It was so delicious. I still miss those wraps.
We used to have this shredded chicken with gravy and mashed potatoes...it was amazing. But when I bumped up to middle school it was gone. :(
All about the tots. And the rolls.
Haha, most of the food was pretty good. In high school we got executive salads with all the fixings as an option, too. The chocolate milk was amazing- I have yet to find chocolate milk anywhere that I like as much. On the plus side... I'm planning to be a middle or high school teacher, which means access to school lunches!
I gotta say, my school makes FANTASTIC lunch.
I love almost everything.
My favorite is the rolls, mashed potatoes, tots(perfectly crispy) , and mozerella sticks ( which, ours our kinda doughy and soft and ooozing cheese)
I also adore our ranchers chicken.
omnomnom.
OH! and chocolate crinkle cookie covered in powdered sugar, pure heaven.
Damn the rolls were so mother effin good. But it's been so long since I've graduated and can't find those rolls anywhere else but in those damn school cafeterias. sigh oh and those cookies..... always bought four for a dollar! And sneak them in class. Yum
My high school used to have amazing popcorn chicken and the seasoned fries were good unless you had them every single day. We had these amazing spicy chicken sandwhiches as well but once they got rid of the popcorn chicken, I had those a lot so I kinda got really tired of them =/.
We had Dominos Pizza & Ottis Spunkmeyer cookies as well which was awesome. But once you were a junior you could go off campus where ever you wanted for lunch sooo, I never again ate the school food after they started selling the same things every day instead of switching up the menu.
my elementary school (and this was the early 90's) offered a salad bar some days and that was actually one of my favorite days other than that most of the other food for lunches was rubbery and blah which is why I usually only ate fries and hot cheese and starburst for lunch throughout high school =/
Elementary school: all I remember was looking forward to when we had chocolate milk because if there were stickers on the bottom of the milk then we got to go back to the cafeteria for a prize.
High school: Quesadillas and chicken alfredo.
Omg, reading this brought back the memories of me ordering a Poutine in highschool. I would crave this every day, yet resist to only buy it once a week. Then someone would always want a fry and next thing I know that large poutine was gone. I couldnt get people to stop taking my fries. I remember slapping people cause they would just take it. oh I was MAD LOL
I ate the tacos in elementary school, boardwalk fries in middle (mostly taken from others) and the crackers in high school (friend gave them to me) and sometimes a pretzel. Don't remember anything about the tacos, but the fries were usually decent and so were the crackers and pretzels, but most of my food came from home, though it wasn't any less packaged or more fresh.
Mmmmm, in my high school we had vegan BBQ rib sammiches and vegan ravioli.
In middle school, I always had a pink lemonade and that white cheddar popcorn for lunch. Every.single.day.
In elementary school, my mommy packed my lunch and left me little notes about how much she loved me and told me to have a good day. I remember I had this little plastic Pringle holder and that thing was super fucking cool. AND LUNCHABLES. AND DUNKAROOS. AND CHEESE STICKS (the one where you dipped the cracker stick thingie into the cheddar cheese).
The fries and tots were soggy and nasty as shit. Ehhh.
Yes, the cookies were definitely a number 1 on my list!!
They sold M&M cookies and I seriously could eat the whole batch of them! Aww.. awesome memories!
But as for the actual food itself, they used to have these taco bell burritos that were awesome! But as for anything else, I wouldn't eat it, we had a shopping center that we could walk to across the street in high school and I would always make my way over there! :D
cheese fries in middle school i haven't had pure cheese fries since. no chilli just cheese
We never got cookies. =(
The BLT wrap is delish, though, and SO worth it. They give you about 7 or 8 pieces of bacon on a wrap for only about 3 bucks, and I LOVE it<3
However, while a few things taste pretty good (for our school food), they are not worth the money, so I don't buy it. Plus everything else costs extra, sides, drinks, the works...
We don't get rolls either, or dino pasta!
We do get dunkers! But they don't have cheese and they're only about the length of my hand and width of two of my fingers (tiny), so not a very filling "lunch"..
Generally, I don't eat lunch. My mommy doesn't love me enough to give me money or buy things that I could take to school.
