Microwave Animosity
Toasters. Some people love them while others hate them. The oven/stove...okay if you don't like the oven or stove you must have never had a good home-cooked meal! What about the microwave?
There is one person I know that despises the microwave. He finds the taste of food so revolting after it has been microwaved, that he sees no use for this appliance. I found this disgust so intriguing that I did what any aspiring journalist would do. I sat him down and interviewed him!So here it is, the microwave interview with none other than my boyfriend!
Me: So tell me mister, what is it about the microwave that you cannot stand?Him: The way it changes the taste of the original food...and it makes me fart.
Me: Oookay.
Him: And the smell. It makes the food STINK!
Me: So what do you do with your leftovers?
Him: With the way I eat, I make sure there are no leftovers. If there is any, it would never make it to the microwave and I would feel bad throwing it out.
Me: What do you use your microwave for?
Him: To store my Twinkies and my Hostess chocolate cupcakes.
Me: So what happens when other people in your house have to use the microwave?
Him: "It's out of service," I tell them and then I unplug it.
Me: How thoughtful.
Him: If it aint fresh, I don't mess!
You heard him!
Is there a kitchen appliance that you cannot stand? How do you feel about the microwave?

Why does he have one, then...
LOL, one of my brothers hate eating leftover food, so he wouldn't need the microwave either. The only thing he uses the microwave for is heating water for his instant noodles.
I kinda dislike the microwave... but it's necessary for all those leftovers! We always have leftovers!!!
x.x
And it's good for tea & ramen and stuff...
There is no kitchen appliance that I hate, but there are some I hate to clean...like the food processor...sharp scary blade, little crevices for food to get stuck in. Previously the microwave was an issue, but frequently wiping and the use of a cover made things easier. I mostly use the microwave to reheat things that "won't suffer" in taste and quality in the microwave. But mostly, I might fuss with the idea of using the stove or oven to reheat leftovers if I have the time. Microwave-warmed leftover pizza is gross to me, as is cold pizza. So the only place I find acceptable to reheat pizza is the oven. (I'm so troublesome, right?)
@NikBv@xanga - good question.
How about not even buy a microwave to store twinkies and hostess in them. Aha,and he doens't microwave his food, but he eats twinkies and hostess. So amusing.
Tell Mr. Fresh that Twinkies are filled with super gross preservatives. And that he sounds like a food snob on the worst level.
I use my microwave for storage too. Once in awhile we have left overs but we heat them on the stove or in the oven. No, I didn't buy my microwave, it was a house warming gift, it's a nice microwave, but it's just not our thing. We leave it unplugged at all times, but it's been great for storage in our tiny kitchen. We keep our large plates in it.
microwaves ARE bad. think about it. whats heating the food? why cant ppl with pacemakes be by them. ohh idk. maybe its the waves it emits! i am lazy, and like some oven foods in mike cause its softer lol. hell, i even make miked "toasted cheese samwhiches." but, i try to limit my usage. I dont want to get cancer, plus it takes out all the nutrients. so if your eating veggies for health and dont like the taste, you might want to put your special helmet on...
my rents got rid of their mike years ago. at first i HATED it. but they are smart. im very glad they dont take what the fda/government/corporations say as truth. because its NOT.
The microwave is convenient as heck. While I do cook the majority of the time, my oven is extremely slow to heat and sometimes I forget to take things out of the freezer 3-4 hours beforehand to defrost. So...necessary evil in my book. When I get home from class at 10 pm, sometimes I just wanna throw that baggie of frozen chili in a bowl in the microwave for 6 minutes, not stand in front of the stove for an hour.
I don't hate any kitchen appliances, but I will admit to being slightly afraid of deli-style meat slicers and not loving having to clean things that have lots of spots for food to get stuck or sharp blades.
I NEVER use my microwave. It makes everythinng gross and weirdly textured. I heat up leftovers in the oven or on the stove. It tastes so much better. Microwaves gross me out. Especially when you "cook" something in it and it smells like that for days, thats freaking gross.
But what about the popcorn D:
If he uses it as a snack food storage unit, why is it plugged in? 0_o
I don't like microwaves, the radiation makes the food taste funny.
However, I am in love with my toaster oven.
@bettinatron@xanga - People used to make popcorn in a pan over a stove.
I always used to just heat my food back up on the stove. Even after my friend gave me a microwave I VERY rarely used it, and then it was mostly just to reheat coffee.
Now I have a microwave and I've been using it more but I also just moved into this apartment so I haven't unpacked everything I need for cooking yet.
The microwave belongs to my boyfriend. In the event that we have some horrible breakup and I end up living by myself again, I doubt I'll have a microwave.
I LOVE my microwave! I almost dont see the point in a toaster sense I never use it and when I do its for less than a min and it always burns my toast. But I cant see why he has a microwave if he hates it soo much, he should give it to someone who will appreciate it!
I never had/used a microwave until I went away to university at eighteen. I was in self-catering accommodation, and we didn't have proper ovens, just combo-ovens/microwaves, so I didn't have a choice but to start using one then.
why do we americans have to waste so much.
It's funny, considering that microwaves(the electromagnetic waves, not the microwave oven) only cause vibrational motion to heat up molecules - mainly water molecules. You'll find that microwaving dry things is generally ineffective. Microwaving is generally much like boiling or steaming in the physical method it heats food up...heating water molecules. On the other hand, toaster ovens use heated irons to actually cause the air in the oven to heat up. The hot air causes oxidation at the surfaces the stuff you toast and evaporates moisture, resulting in the browning & crisping. Anyways...I don't understand why people hate the microwave - I think they are perceiving changes in taste or smell that aren't really there just because they think the microwave oven irradiates the food.
He can use an oven to heat leftovers up.... :/
the microwaved food might be changed because it was overheated due to not enough moisture in the food and/or the person didn't stand by to watch the food and the food...overheated:D or if you put it in a container with the lid too tight and not let moisture out or if you don't have a lid and the food explodes, then those are annoying microwave problems. the microwaved food isn't responsible for his flatulence, but likely the choice of foods that he eats caused it, so don't blame the innocent microwave
lol either he overheated/burnt the food or the food itself stinks and wasn't prepared well, so the food is the culprit for being bad, not the microwave. or he can't stand leftover food, so it automatically stinks/tastes bad, but freshly made food is going to taste a lot better than food that was left there for even a few hours. I know somebody, who refuses to eat leftovers and tosses it immediately if it is just one day old when it is still good to eat, but he is one of those rich snobs, which doesn't surprise me, because he thinks that he can afford to waste the food. your situation is different though. anyway, my microwave has been helpful and I haven't had to punish the microwave just yet, but if something goes wrong, I'll refuse to clean the microwave turntable and let him rot in his own greasy filth that I caused when the butter from the popcorn dripped out:D
I had no idea so many people hated the microwave. I use a few times a day.
I haven't had a microwave for years. There are other ways to reheat leftovers folks. Stove top or oven.
I never got one when I started living on my own, mainly because I didn't have enough counter space and then I just became use to living without it. I recommend it. I make meals, use fresh ingredients. It feels good.I am so happy that someone has the same impressions as I have. IT does make the food stink! My housemate ONLY eats pre-made meals and microwaves them to death. The food smell is so disgusting, you wouldn't believe it. It makes me wanna puke, especially fish and all those curries. He alo heats up bags of vegies, like broccoli, brussles sprouts etc. it smells like a whole football team farting in the changing room!
wow, sounds like some people are sensitive to smell. I figure sometimes if the food is left over, the time i has to settle lets the spices sink into the food more and if meaty- the oils help marinate.
I LOVE left over curry or spaghetti.
If you dont use the microwave right though, you can destroy the taste of food. Left over rice I normally spritz with water so it has some moisture and doesnt come out funky.
