  • Confessions of a Kitchenholic

I have a confession to make: I think I'm obsessed with my kitchen...

This may sound strange, but to me, the kitchen is not simply a place where I get food.

It's something beyond that; it's my private space of relaxation and happiness.

The smell of food on the stove, the aromatic scent of my collection of teas and spices, the sound of the water hitting the ceramic plates, the beeping of the rice cooker, and the dim lights above the stove all make me feel happy and finally at home.

Sometimes I even bring my chair to that crowded area and do my work, shivering from the chill of the floor, wincing through the horrible lighting to see the screen of my laptop. But surprisingly, I end up doing my work very efficiently.

And that's how much I love it.

My friend, when I finally invited her to my place for a meal, seemed completely amazed.

    "What?" I asked.

"Nothing, I've just never seen you so...at ease with yourself," she replied.

And while her comment surprised me, what she said was true.

I sometimes catch myself doing silly things such as singing a medley of all the songs I can think of (Katy Perry, Jason Mraz, classics, jazz, Kpop, Jpop, etc.) or swaying my head from side to side while I'm doing the dishes or standing by the stove.

It's as if the kitchen brings out another side of me (but of course, I'm not saying that I'm bipolar or anything of that sort)!

And another curious thing I do with my kitchen: I don't like to have others use it.....

    I know, surprising right?

Not that I freak out if they do, but there is something uncomfortable about it.

I used to think that this was just something I did to be polite, not letting others do the work when they come or stay over at my place.

When my friends try to help out, I insist that it is unnecessary.

But then sometimes, I tend to over-react with this "insisting".

In the end, I basically push them out of the kitchen and do everything all by myself.

And I know that there was a recent posting where the author of the post confessed of having Food OCD.

Well, in my case, it seems like I have kitchen OCD... ( Oh no, I think I literally just realized this as I was writing)

I have a tendency to wipe constantly.

I definitely have those days when my dishes stack up like the Himalayas, and it won't bother me too much.

But I get quite irritated when I see residues of food, soap, and even spots of water being left in the sink or around the counter.

    Strange right?

I actually find it all funny--I mean, kitchen OCD, really? Pffshh!

But at the same time, it's not something I realized to be a strange thing until my friend pointed it out by telling me how attached I seemed to be with my kitchen--that is, overly attached.

And after days and days of contemplation--it's not a big deal, but it was constantly at the back of my mind--I put the puzzles together.

I love my kitchen because I have always loved food for giving me comfort.

The whole idea of buying, making, preparing, and serving food has made me more happy than anything has ever made me in the entire world.

    So here's my conclusion:

For me, there is a strong association between my kitchen and my memories with food, my family, my childhood, the days of happiness, and the days of comfort.

This has ultimately resulted in my obsession with my kitchen today.

So there you have it , I am obsessed with my kitchen in every possible way!

But somehow, this doesn't bother me at all--au contraire, I'm glad I realized how something so simple as my kitchen can make me so completely happy!

Thanks for listening to my confession!

Do you have some obsessive attachments to a certain place? To your Kitchen? What do you think about Kitchen OCD?

Oh...you are a kitchen lover after my own heart!  I can totally relate, down the to the part of being very uncomfortable with people "helping out" in the kitchen!  I really wished that I made more money so I could better afford all the goodies for my kitchen when we were remodeling in the kitchen...all the things I could decorate it with, appliances and such.  Some women have a thing for shoes and purses...I go to kitchenware stores and look at kitchen gadgets   I was so happy that I had a drawer that was big enough to contain a roll of heavy duty foil vertically rather than horizontally, the one that is 18" wide.  I was excited to buy drawer organizers to separate the utensils.  And matching bins for the dry goods like flour and sugar...Cheers to loving your kitchen!

@babybug329@xanga - It's so nice to hear that! My friends kept thinking that there was something wrong with me so I almost started thinking that way too. It's very encouraging to hear that I'm not the only one who loves their kitchen

I definitely go shoe shopping but eye shopping for nice kitchen gadgets and dishware etc is the best! You could probably see how obsessed I am by looking at this other post I've done

Thank you for your lovely comment!

I love my kitchen, too! But I do allow others in and to help, and even defer to

    their way

of doing things (I know, *gasp* right?? LOL).

I think that everyone has attachments to kitchens, though --- just about every party in the world, everyone ends up in the kitchen, standing and gabbing and eating and drinking, when there are perfectly comfy couches & chairs in the living room. This fact is the basis of modern home design, too --- Open Concept was designed to make most of the common living space a part of the kitchen! People spend hundreds of thousands of dollars converting the old-style homes, with the walled-in unsocial lonely kitchens being a thing of the past, and thoroughly hated among both young families and empty-nesters alike!
Think about it --- from the day we're born, we essentially need the kitchen, whether it's to feed our mothers who then feed us, or storage, making and warming our baby bottles to feed us. When we're sick, our comfort largely comes from the kitchen. So much of life education is in and because of the kitchen, from math in measuring, science from temperatures to chemical reactions in baking. Smells evoke memories, and most of the smells in our lives that make us feel good come from the kitchen; this is why spa & beauty companies make their products and services smell like foods whether vanilla bath stuff to lip glosses that taste like sweet foods to salt scrubs with different, bubble baths in scents like Vanilla Frosting or Apricot Jam or fresh peaches.

@Bonvivante - Aww, don't let your friends tell you that you're strange.  Some people shop, some people scrapbook.  We cook and bake!  I should probably revive my Xanga blog and start posting food related articles.  And definitely, there's shoe shopping

@CanadianE@xanga - I agree why many people are attached to the kitchen, it truly is the hub of the household.  Food definitely remind of good times shared with your family, hints of comfort.
