  • I Miss Cupcakes In School: Childhood Nostalgia

Last Thursday I was sitting in class, waiting group after group to give a presentation of my own, when yet another group started their presentation. While setting up, one of the girls walked around handing out Crumbs cupcakes to everyone for apparently no reason other than to please the class. I was quite happy about this!

Being a college senior, it's rare that goodies like this are distributed in class anymore. It made me start to reminisce about the good ol' days. Elementary school, middle school, high school...I feel like people always brought in cupcakes, cookies, brownies, you name it!

Whether it was for a birthday, part of a project, a holiday, or just whatever, I loved it! Then I realized - the older you get the less often sweet goodies are distributed to you. How unfortunate!

One of my clearest memories of elementary school was in 5th grade. A friend of mine baked a bunch of cupcakes (with the help of her mom, of course!) and brought them into school for my birthday. It was just after gym class, and as we walked back to our regular class room everyone got really quiet. I was the last to walk in and everyone yelled, "happy birthday!" and cupcakes were at each desk. If that happened now I'd be ecstatic!

Since I will be graduating in May, I am running out of time real fast to ever have a cupcake-in-school opportunity again. Therefore, I vow that at the end of the semester I will make cupcakes and bring them to my classes for everyone! Luckily, I go to a very small college so my classes aren't much larger than that of an average high school class.

Who knows, maybe this act of kindness and sharing will rub off on others and start a cupcake-in-college revolution! After all, those presenters in my class last Thursday sure rubbed off on me.

What are your fondest childhood memories of people bringing treats to school?

My school wouldn't let you give out anything homemade. Stupid liability issues, I'm assuming. People usually brought in some form of Little Debbie treat for birthdays and stuff. Come to think of it, I haven't had a Swiss Cake Roll in years...

every time it was someone's birthday was my favorite day, haha. except the kids that brought in the little munchkins from dunkin donuts...i always wanted more! but my favorite memory would have to be when i was 5 or 6 years old, my mom had to go away for work, so my dad and i stayed up late making cupcakes for me to take in to school the next day. well, i think it was probably his first time making cupcakes, or baking at all, because we filled the cups right to the brim with batter, and they were HUGE! i think they had some eggshells in them, too...but we frosted them with pink, strawberry flavored icing and sprinkles of course, and i loved them. ah, nostalgia...

I'm a Senior in college, and I've been lucky enough to have several professors who love to feed us! Last semester, one of my profs would sporadically bring in munchkins, and a huge array of cookies on the days of our midterms and finals. Another prof of mine used to randomly bring us huge muffins or bakery cookies. Maybe sociology profs are just a giving bunch, hah!

My friend had to hand in his English term paper once and I went to class with him. His prof had make like 3 boxes of homemade cupcakes for the students who handed it in person instead of email and no one showed up. She gave us all of the leftovers, and they were THE most amazing cupcakes I have ever eaten in my life. She could rival Crumbs, hands down. She needs to look into a different career.

Most elementary schools won't allow sugar at all. My mom's school if kids bring in snacks it's apples and peanut butter or veggies and dip. My mom can't even give her kids candy anymore she had to switch to animal crackers. (not cookies). This is AWFUL. I miss valentines day parties the most.

aww... that's nice of you.  i remember a parent bringing in a cake for their child's birthday and was then distributed to the class after we sang the birthday song.  in high school, we had the occasional cup-cake and cookie bakers who brought in goodies during special days or events.  lastly... i remember our grade 12 Chemistry teacher bringing in chocolate fudge brownies as a treat after our final exam.

I miss the days of goodies in the classroom as a kid!  I feel so bad for kids nowadays because many schools do not allow treats anymore due to the nutritional concerns.  Kids are kids only once, let them enjoy!  It's kind of sad some schools don't allow home baked goods either...home baked love is nothing like store bought.  I do get to bake often, I bring goodies for coworkers when it's someone's birthday or a holiday, such as cupcakes, cookies, brownies. etc.

    Mmmmmm... cupcakes

My fave was cupcakes in Ice Cream Cones!  I was so sure my mom invented them!

@FallingSafely@xanga - I'm surprised they allow Apples and PB with the "rise" in peanut allergies!

@Stacey@xanga - I think after a certain grade (3rd maybe) they think that kids are responsible enough to know if they should be licking other kids food. But before third if it's a peanut free zone. No celery and peanut butter. All the allergy kids sit together after third grade too if their parents request.

elementary + hs @ BC is really strict on sugar food :( no more bake sales or delicious food :(

i get that it's for health purpose..but to cut out even bake sales >< some teachers are even afraid to hand out candies at times !! arrrg

Nobody ever did this in England...

Just this school year, my daughters' school district established what they call a "Healthy Initiative".  NO more birthday treats and no more treats for the 3 parties the PTA hosts each school year.  Any snacks brought in must be fall under certain healthy guidelines.  Instead of cupcakes our kids are celebrating the holidays/birthdays with carrot sticks and apple slices.  There are tons of parents out-raged.  I can appreciate the need to teach our children healthy habits, but a few treats along the way won't kill them....now the over processed crap they call school lunch might.  Evidentally the Food Services dept. doesn't have to follow the same rules, which is extremely frustrating...and a whole other topic!  Anyway, so glad you have fond memories of cupcakes in school, because my kids won't.

I think the older you get, the more you need someone to surprise you with a cupcake. We need something to brighten our day, because I know adulthood doesn't do it for me, haha.

In high school, my mom would go to McDonalds and buy like 20+ burgers and bring them to me and my friends at lunch. She was pretty cool. She did it just because. It was so random we are all in our mid 20's now, but it's still a memory they all have of her.
