Yesterday we left early to drive for LA. Since we left our home so early we didn't have time to eat breakfast or eat out on the road because things were tight. Well my mom had packed little bits of celery. I love celery and have been eating it since I was young but it had also been a really long time since I ate some.. It's one of those moments... where time does not make the heart grow fonder... but more like you seem to forget that you like something or just lazy and don't eat it. Anyways, so I was eating the celery and my tongue was completely numb. And I found it strange but I like the taste so much that I kept eating it. I think it happens when I eat radish too... but I still eat them. I asked my mom if her tongue was getting numb too and hers didn't.
My tongue didn't get swollen it was just numb for a while and the sensation came back
Has anybody else experienced a numbness while eating celery or well any other foods? Can it be an allergic reaction or is it normal?

It's happened to me before. I don't know what causes it but it's never done me any harm to eat it.
Yes... I think it's the texture! But I eat it, anyway! :)
That happened to me after I fasted for a really long time. Everything tasted insanely good or strong. Celery was really spicy and numbed my tongue after one stalk. I don't know the exact reason why celery does that, but it's pretty common and nothing to fret about.
Happens to me with pineapple. :o
It's an allergic reaction. Luckily it's not quite as serious as if it caused vomiting/diarrhea, but it's an oral allergy. Supposedly the celery allergy is one of the most common allergies for adults in Switzerland, Germany, and France. So maybe you're just especially susceptible if you're from any of those places.
Pineapple numbness is also a food allergy (which I think I have, but only large quantities of pineapple).
never gotten that with celery. maybe it's an allergy?
I get cotton mouth, which feels numb, but more of dry mouth, when I eat boiled spinach and persimmon fruit, which contains an astringent compound that shrinks/constricts body tissues and it happens when the persimmon is unripe. radish is related to watercress and arugula...and some people have had bad allergic reactions to arugula, so if you eat the cousin, radish, then the numb feeling is one symptom. some people react more severely while for others, the allergy is mild, in your case.

that happens to me when I eat pineapple! but I am allergic to it... maybe its an allergic reaction
@Starlight_Angel_79@xanga - I know that's how I am... I will still eat it.
@unstoppableobsession@xanga - The texture causes a little numbness?
@Jamesmuse@xanga - We had cut it into little pieces and it was probably one stalk when I started noticing my tongue had been numb. Yea, I was trying to figure out if it was common. :)
@zretrareo27@xanga - I love pineapple too but thank goodness I don't get that with pineapple or I wouldn't be able to taste the sweetness...
@vicdaily@xanga - An oral allergy huh... But I am glad that I don't have those symptom... a numbing tongue is livable lol... but I'm not a German or Swiss descendant but in very far generations I heard maybe french but it's too far to tell... I don't think that might be it though... or I don't know?? I don't eat too much pineapple to tell but I think I would have noticed by now... So have about in pinacolada?
@infinitelyalex@xanga - Yea, it was a weird sensation... it's like putting oralgel in your whole tongue lol
@P0RCELA1N_D0LL@xanga - Wow, so even raddish is a mild allergy... is yours more severe? And thanks for the info :)
@SkinTightAndLuckyStrikes@xanga - Only with pineapple... I think more people here are allergic to pineapple than celery. Is it with any quantity?
it happens with banana. I am probably allergic to them considering I get hives in my throat and my mouth itches. I just take an allergy pill and deal with it.
@pinktiger335@xanga - That's what it's always been for me!! Nothing else happens and it's usually when I bite into it and start chewing that I get that weird numbing feeling on my tongue... it could be an allergic reaction, but I love it!!
This happens to my boyfriend when he eats pineapple. He gets funny little bumps on his tongue, too.
No, that's a chemical found in celery. Can't remember the name. Google it. But some people are more sensitive to it than others. For me, my tongue goes numb and everything's itchy. That "sensitivity" is considered an allergy.
I'm guessing it's a mild allergy reaction. I don't have this problem with celery but my tongue do feel numb when I eat pineapples.
@Erika_Steele@xanga - Yea, if you're getting hives I don't doubt allergies... wow...I never noticed if anything else happened... I was driving and eating celery maybe the road was more important.
@unstoppableobsession@xanga - yea, it does feel kind of cool for the numbing sensation lol
@inthenameofwater@xanga - I will definitely look it up. thanks! :)
@Candilicious_Meanie@xanga - How long have you had this happen to you?
I must admit that my tongue doesn't go numb when I eat celery but when I eat too much sugar my tongues swells up! lol

@pinktiger335@xanga - It happens since I was young.
That doesn't sound normal to me.
& It's never happened to me.
Yes, this happens to me every time I eat raw celery. I doubt it is an allergy, just how your body processes the enzymes.
Celery is known to contain psoralens, a group of substances that cause a toxic dermal reaction on exposure to ultraviolet A rays (UVA).

@szielinski@xanga - wow, good to know. thanks!
@Erika_Steele@xanga - bananas? That sucks! I eat like 4-5 a day with my smoothies. :( Have you always been allergic?
This never happens to me. I am actually tempted to go eat large quantities of celery now just to see if there's something I've been missing out on-- like tongue numbness.
@sagwaskeeper@xanga - it started in high school. I don't remember eating before then, so I guess I was always allergic to them.
never heard of celery doing that. I don't experience it.
