Dining in the Air: Yum or Yuck?
There are many inconveniences to traveling by air:
1. Your hands are full with your luggage, passport, and tickets
2. You are required to take your shoes off and walk bare feet under the metal detector.
3. When you finally seat yourself in the plane, the babies start their chorus of cries and people rush past, hitting your arms and your head.
Traveling can be really no fun. But the worst part could be the plane food.
The smell is revolting, and most of the time the food simply worsens the flight sickness. But occasionally, I find that traveling to special destinations can bring new surprises to the plane's folding table.
I remember my trip to Japan, where I received a Chirashi sushi (box sushi) with fresh sashimi that were neatly decorated on top of the seasoned rice--and I still dream of it.
I'm sure first class meals would be incomparably amazing, but certain economy class meals can really be a surprising treat.
While I sat watching a movie, the stewardess stuck a piece of paper just above my individual movie screen. It was a menu that listed a choice of different entrees: pork, chicken or pasta.
And while the main food was not too great, I was surprised by the desserts--Chocolate Almond Cake with raspberry coulis and Milano cookies on the side--which were delicious!
So perhaps it all depends on luck that we either find great food or horrible food on planes.
What kind of plane food have you encountered?

The last time I had airplane food I was actually impressed because I expected it to be so bad. Don't think I will really eat it in the future though because there doesn't seem to be such thing as free airplane food anymore.
I absolutely can't stand airplane food. It's not that bad, really, but the smell combined with how I'm usually just a bit queasy from motion or staleness makes for me opting out of the meal.
Meat usually makes me uneasy, so I opt for either the vegetarian meal or the fruit platter if they have one.
When I was younger airplane food would always make me sick. I don't know if it was the smell or the taste or what it was, I always got sick. The last time I had food in a plane (like 3 years ago), it actually wasn't too bad. They had choices and the food was pretty decent surprisingly, and this was flying with Emirates.
When I travel oversea, the food was pretty good, especially the dessert =D Sometimes, the smells of the food would mix, and it wasn't pleasant, but if I knew I was getting motion sickness, I always take a dramamine pill before. This really helps and also, rest as much as you can. Despite the fact that thinking about eating food can make you sick, you should still have some food in your stomach because it's better to throw up food than bile. Plus, the food will give your body some energy, so that you won't feel so weak even if you do get sick. Just saying from my own experiences.
@Stephanie - Isn't that the truth! I was suprised to have even received water to drink.
My plane rides have been limited to short ones, so food was not really necessary. The longest flight I've been on was 5 hours (Los Angeles to Ft Lauderdale). We did get a fruit and cheese plate to share (kind of like the kind you get at Starbucks). I cannot say if plane food is palatable or not.
Although I don't eat a lot during the flight, i like the food they offer from the airlines when you travel overseas. it shows what the regional foods are like you can kind of guessing. Some of sauces and snacks I collected as souvenir.
I thought this was about that "Restaurant in the Sky".
Well I'm about to fly tomorrow. Lets see how that goes.
@a12906@xanga - Haha I thought that too
I've never had airplane food that I really didn't like. But the desserts and sides are normally really good. The main dish is normally pretty okay
When I was flying to Japan, I ordered seafood on rice. It wasn't bad, but it didn't taste that great either. I was surprised to see that there was an abalone on my rice though. Not very big of course, but it surprised me because it's considered as a delicacy.
@a12906@xanga - That's what I thought too.
I'm kind of used to the main dishes. So I never really find anything too horrible. Only once in a while. What I look forward to are the desserts :P
How do you get your name or username to show up in black? I want mine to be unclickable too! So I can finally be one of the cool kids.
Japan Airlines has the BEST airplane food!!!!!!!!!!!!
A long time ago... I mean like... This was literally, ten years ago... I was on a Continental Flight and we had this weird... Chicken sandwich thing... Or something... Whatever it was... It was the MOST AMAZING THING I'VE EVER EATEN!! I'm not even exaggerating. So weird, I know. When it comes to flight food, some are good and some are bad. Personally, I really miss dining in the air but then again, I don't travel on long flights as often as I do so that's not so bad.
this website is very good, you can go and see it

I've had some good plane food but it's just not enough space to eat comfortably
@a12906@xanga - I think you would have to log out and make a comment as an anonymous user.
@Sehsun@xanga - I'm not sure how to do that.
The only plane food I've ever had was a fruit salad when I was six years old. My other plane rides have been too short.
@a12906@xanga - You would have to go to the upper right hand corner and sign out of your Xanga. Go to any post that you want to comment on. When you get to the comment box, there should be an option where you can comment as a Xanga user or as an Anonymous person. Click on the latter, and there is an option to put your name, email, and website. If you don't put a website, your name will show up as unclickable (I would think - I haven't tried it yet). Hope this helps!
I love airplane food. Not necessarily because it is delicious, but because it is curious. One time, I got a box full of lettuce and a saucer with five grapes in it. Once I got a mini toblerone bar and an itty bitty coke can; that made my day.
While the entrees can be questionable at best, I think airline food's most redeeming quality is that it quells the intense monotony of a very long flight. Or shuts that little kid up for five minutes. Whichever.
Every time I travelled on a plane, which has been to the Philippine, it's always been good. I don't mind it, but I do take anti-motion sickness pill.
@Sehsun@xanga - I don't think I have the anonymous option for some reason. :(
@T0m03@xanga - I had a similar experience as well. I thought the chicken sandwich was great (granted, I think it was just a chicken patty)
When I flew from Munich to Toronto, the supper was disgusting. It was some sort of chicken and potatoes with the consistency of jello. But the breakfast they served in the morning was amazing. It was an individual sized loaf of banana bread, with fruit salad, juice, and I think they had apples and oranges too if you asked.
