  • Marathon Runner Eats Only McDonald's For 30 Days

Joe D'Amico, 36, of Chicago, is set to run the Los Angeles Marathon March 20.  Though he's run 14 marathons before, D'Amico is trying something a bit different this time around.  Since February 18, this brave soul has been eating nothing but McDonald's, and he will continue to do so until the day of the race.

The "McRunner" has been documenting his experience on his blog—from how often he's exercising to what he's eating.  But this is more than just a personal "Challenge" for D'Amico—for every person who becomes a fan of the McRunner on Facebook, he will donate $1 to the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

While he's gained popularity over the course of his Challenge (he now has over 2,700 Facebook fans), D'Amico told WGN radio that he's not being paid by McDonald's.  "I'm just a regular guy trying to run fast," he said.

What do you think of the McRunner's Challenge?

I love it. It seems a little too similar to the Super-Size Me documentary, but he has successfully made it distinctive and interesting.

I think it's incredibly unhealthy...granted, he's a runner so he will probably be able to handle the food better, metabolically (higher muscle cell sensitivity to insulin & better response to insulin in general), but why do things that will increase your LDL and lower HDL after years of running marathon-level have raised your HDL and dropped your LDL to awesome levels?

He probably won't have a problem with excess caloric intake if he trains regularly, but calories are not the only thing that count.  Why encourage your body to start metabolizing fats for energy versus carbohydrates, which are a much better immediate source for exercise such as running and won't produce ketone bodies? :/

Also, McDonalds foods lack nutrional value.  Not much fiber, not much vitamins and minerals, mostly just saturated fats and carbohydrates (much of which is refined carbohydrates, which generally have high glycemic index values).

Of course, there are people who don't even exercise and eat McDonalds for a month....that's even worse.

    @a_drunken_cellist@xanga - Watch Fat Head.

Michael Phelps was a spokesperson for McD's during the olympics... he ate it everyday, actually, along with 4000 other calories.

  • Beb3Lika@xanga

even if i trained and worked out hardcore on a daily basis, i can't imagine eating McDonald's for 30 days, let alone once.

  • a_drunken_cellist@xanga

@starcrossedloversdivine@xanga - I think it's really sad that he used his celebrity status to try to promote McDonalds to Chinese kids :(

It's almost like trying to spread the obesity epidemic from America to Asia.  Phelps' caloric expenditure is in the thousands per day, so maybe he can eat McDonalds every day, but the average person is much more prone to developing metabolic syndrome from a month of daily McD's.

I see that being successful.... rolls eyes

  • explosive@xanga

With as much as he trains, he probably burns several thousand calories a day. Eating the portions sedentary people eat is like running on empty but he can eat that many calories with it all being McDonald's.

  • thinsomnia@xanga

He's in for a really challenging marathon this time... that shit messes your system up so bad.

That's disgusting, and kind of interesting. I wonder how he's going to do.

  • lifeonacitybusem4@xanga

Actually, he is probably one of the few people whose bodies require as much fat, salt, sugar, and protein as McDonalds provides.

  • FatWorlD_WONDER@xanga

@Beb3Lika@xanga - no one asked about YOUR dietary preferences.

  • imnAnimeAddict@xanga

it's great that hes trying to do some good by donating to the ronald mcdonald house charity, but all that fast food isn't healthy and probably won't do anything to improve his running time...

  • Beb3Lika@xanga

@FatWorlD_WONDER@xanga - no one asked you to read my comment and i don't see why you care?

  • innocentsinc@xanga

Hes promoting unhealthy diet, I work in the health care field and can tell you I've seen plenty of thin people with high blood pressure and diabetes. Fast Foods are generally unhealthy and are loaded with salts sugar and unhealthy saturated fats.

  • sastsuki@xanga
  • PervyPenguin@xanga

The food is processed, yeah, but he will need those fats and carbs if he's running a marathon.

I see this going well for him.

  • P0RCELA1N_D0LL@xanga

maybe some people are imagining that he is eating a couple big macs with large fries and large soda, so that's revolting. despite it not being healthy, his meal plans seem very organized, rational and not overwhelmed with calories. plus he is exercising and burning off the calories. besides, it is only for 30 days. some people eat fast food regularly for a year or something. now that's very unhealthy and gross.

@Beb3Lika@xanga - i never said i cared. that's precisely why i said, "no one asked about YOUR dietary preferences." i don't frickin' care! no one cares! they DO care about this article though--a focus which you inadvertently redirected to yourself instead. and, i didn't need to be prompted to read your stupid comment. you're the fourth commenter for chrissake! how is no one going to see that? if you don't want people looking at your comments, then don't comment. it's as simple as that.

I think he could promote a healthier diet, however I think his intentions are definitely respectable, and just became a facebook fan! :) It'll certainly be interesting to see how things turn out for him in the end! :)

  • Beb3Lika@xanga

@FatWorlD_WONDER@xanga - if you don't care, then i don't see why you're so agitated by my comment, hence your response.  i never said i'm bothered by the fact that people read my comments.  you need to chill.  all i was saying, is that if i were to put myself in Joe D'Amico shoes and do such intensive training, i wouldn't subject my body to eating those types of food.  i don't see how that's much different than if i were to say "ew, that's fuckin' disgusting and unhealthy".  yeah, i made my comment more personal, but comments in general doesn't always have to be directly implied.

  • FatWorlD_WONDER@xanga

@Beb3Lika@xanga - wow. what makes you think my response, "no one asked about YOUR dietary preferences," conveys i'm agitated? i'm simply making an observation about how much people care about what you would do if put yourself in Joe D'Amico's running shoes; which, btw, is not very much. and, no, it is totally NOT the same for a person to say, "ew, that's fucking disgusting and unhealthy," when what they truly mean is, "even if i trained and worked out hardcore on a daily basis, i can't imagine eating McDonald's for 30 days, let alone once." at least the former response directs attention away from their own self and states feelings outright about the topic at hand. your original response, on the other hand, is ALL about you, you, and more you.

also, omg i never said it bothered you that people look at your comments. why are you putting words in my "comment box"? you said, "no one asked you to read my comment," and i responded by saying, "i didn't need to be prompted to read your stupid comment. you're the fourth commenter for chrissake! how is no one going to see that? if you don't want people looking at your comments, then don't comment." how in the world is "if you don't want" an implication for "if you are bothered by"? "not wanting to" and "being bothered by something" are two separate meanings of their own, thank you very much.
geez, how the heck am i supposed to chill in the face of rhetorical stupidity? duh! of course comments in general do not have to be directly implied. the thing is though, you are so narcissistic that you made no reference to the actual article itself but instead talked about your own damn self.
for future reference: telling a person, "you need to chill," is just about the worst thing you could possibly say to appease someone already angered. if you told a friend that, i'm not sure how they would be able to prevent every fiber in their being from bitch-slapping you. but we're not friends, so kudos to that!
i can't do this anymore. this is too stupid. you win. if anyone sees this, i'm sorry.
