Did You Want Tomato With That?
Picture this: You got a hankering for a cheeseburger, or perhaps a chicken sandwich. You decide Wendy's is the place that will satisfy your cravings. You're anticipating that juicy meat, that crunchy lettuce, that yummy red tomato..but wait - there's no tomato on your sandwich!?!
Thanks to this crazy winter weather, Wendy's is temporarily making tomatoes available only upon request.
Fast food joints are feeling the bite of tomato crops lacking in plentiful amounts this year. This winter proved to be unusually cold in both Florida and Mexico, where the tomatoes supplied to many companies hail from. Many crops froze or just didn't grow at all, causing tomato prices this year to double.
On February 11th, Wendy's put signs up at all of it's locations across the nation stating that if anyone wants a tomato on their sandwich it is now only available by request. Other fast food restaurants aren't as affected, with McDonald's business going as usual and Burger King having only temporary spot outages.
Wendy's Director of Communications, Kitty Munger, stated that she has heard the shortages will continue through mid-April.
So until then, if you want tomato, better let them know ahead of time.

Watermelon is expensive as fuck, but delicious as ever.
Sucks for Wendy's. On the rare occasion I do eat fast food, it's the spicy chicken sandwich and the tomato makes it amazing, haha.

They've done this before, and it was sad then too. I understand though.

Yup, they had to do this last year.. You also aren't guaranteed to get tomato, they may be out.. Have had a few times when I asked still not get any or get a little wee one that you don't even notice
Froze? In Florida in Mexico? Highly dubious indeed. Why wouldn't all fast food restaurants be equally affected?
@explosive@xanga - that's a good question! I mean..it could just be that McDonald's has more money than Wendy's so perhaps they don't really care to spend more on them. But who knows, that's the only reason I can think of.
in australia wendys is an ice cream shop, not fast food.
I love tomatoes, but I order sandwiches without tomatoes at fast food joints. The tomatoes will often sit out forever, be too green, or look as if they've been sliced for days and merely refrigerated. I prefer a nice, homegrown tomato or at the very least one that I've picked out from the store.
@Athlyx@xanga - Watermelons usually go on sale..which was amazing during the summer season. They can get expensive but if you know where to look, then you won't have that problem.

I went and saw the sign, I did not ask for a tomato, but was given one anyway, it was of poor quality, clearly the weather has made a big impact.

uh... I would NEVER order anything with tomato on it from a fast food joint... in fact, this whole post seems contradictory to me. When I go to a fast food joint, I'm looking for greasy crunchy, hormone filled icky food (which is why I don't go often haha) and the one thing that comes on my sandwich that is ALWAYS un-appetizing is the tomato. It's disgusting. They're store bought, shipped, and not farm fresh.
They're never as you just described, juicy, red, etc... they're usually sort of greenish or a color sort of resembling what MIGHT be red or.. maybe puke? And generally, they taste like wallpaper or glue... this is actually in part one of the MANY reasons that many people don't like tomato... their experiences with them at grocery and restaurants.
A REAL tomato is like the one that I purchased at Farmers Market the other day. It was locally grown, bright blood red, and the flavor? Forget ketchup! This thing was on POINT
hahahaha I worked at Wendy's last year when this happened. I was JUST telling my husband and a couple of friends how people had to request tomatos for like two months, and they were like what? That's crazy. Guess they didn't go to Wendy's the whole time....? But it is so funny that you would post this after I told that story. Not only are the tomatos more expensive, but they are of less quality, so..
i'm allergic anyway!
they did that when we had the tomato shortage in tucson about 2 or 3 months ago
@Hinase@xanga - I know where to get them for less, it's just a good 40 - 50 miles from my place. So it's more about not paying for gas, haha. I just wish Native Sun would expand out to here already. Whole Foods is fucking everyone over.

My husband just told me about this the other night. After working in the yard all day long, we were too tired to make dinner, and it was a Sunday night, so only fast food was left as a choice. I wanted a spicy caesar salad from Wendy's, and when he got back he told me about the sign. Did the salad have tomatoes? Yes. Were they gross? Yes. I didn't taste them though because they were squishy grape tomatoes, and I knew better. I cut one opened and sniffed it though. NOT good.

I can totally understand the situation of there being a shortage of good tomatoes for produce suppliers to the food industry. I have noticed the tomatoes are more expensive at the market...so I won't be buying tomatoes for a bit. I used to work at El Pollo Loco and a lot tomatoes are used there. I used to place the orders for the supplies and check in the inventory. There was an incident that caused a shortage of tomatoes available so the price went from about $8.50/25 pound box to $17.50/25 pound box and we were only able order half as much as needed. The few tomatoes we did get were green and hard, not great for fresh salsa. Worst part from a business standpoint was that the tomato salsa didn't generate income either! People bought chicken and got salsa as a condiment free!
