Just To Clarify - You DIDN'T Order Glass in Your Sandwich..?
McDonald's is being sued yet again. What for this time? A woman bit right into a shard of glass in her chicken sandwich. She may have asked for crispy, but not with that kind of crunch.
Vjollca Lecaj went to McDonald's one day last summer in the southwestern United States. She ordered a spicy McChicken and instead received a spicy McChicken with extra glass. This past Friday (February 11th) she filed a lawsuit against them for it.
Lecaj is looking to be compensated $600,000 for damages, including "severe and permanent oral injuries as well as great pain and anguish."
Though I understand glass should definitely not be in your McDonald's sandwich (or any sandwich, for that matter), I'm a little curious as to why she waited so long to finally file a lawsuit.
Have you ever found something in food served to you that shouldn't have been there?

Not sure why, but maybe it has to do with formalities of a lawsuit. My brother sued a company and it took 3 years to get his due. Its a long lengthy process sometimes, I dont know what the lawyer needed to do for that claim.
@wolvenchic@xanga - hmm I figured it may have been something to do with how the legal system works and all. Although I understand why it is done, this whole business of suing people never made sense to me haha
@aliconklin - It really seems like nothing until you realize someone put you in a horrible situation, in most cases, medically or in a theft position and make you fight for any damages. For my brother, it was replacing 2 of his front teeth because someone didnt mark that they had just mopped a super wet area of the floor. Although he didnt sue for that much, he sued for what would cover his medical expenses.
Oh no! That sounds horrible. I've never had something like this happen to me, thank goodness. But I also try to avoid McDonald anyway...
Someone I know got herpes from eating soup. The doctor apparently said that the soup contained a shitload of semen.
Ouch!!! D: and @lagnolalia@xanga - EW. o________o
It always takes a long time for a lawsuit to come about because you work on them for a few years before coming at them. It's got a lot to do with presenting evidence before trial, & over the years you accumulate doctor's bills, psychological evaluations, etc. Anything to rack up the worth.
I bit into a hot dog once and found a piece of plastic wrap inside it. As in inside the "meat" itself, and totally invisible if you had looked at the whole dog. I just picked it out and kept eating.
Yes, biting into glass in a sandwich would be really disgusting, but honestly, it's McDonalds, are you seriously expecting quality ingredients? The "meat" alone is probably enough to kill you after a while. And 600 thousand dollars? People in the US are ridiculously sue-happy. I can see demanding enough money to cover any medical expenses she may have had, but I highly doubt that shard of glass was big enough to cause half a million dollars worth of anguish. I hate how people think a small incident should be twisted and exaggerated to make themselves rich at someone else's expense. I hope she loses and has to pay her lawyer anyway.
@Just_Another__Disaster@xanga - ohh I see, thanks for the knowledge! I guess that only seems logical now that you pointed it out haha
I'll share a story with you guys - one time about a year ago I was eating a fruit and nut granola bar when I bit into something REALLY hard. I went to go pick it out, when I realized it spanned the entire length of the bar. So I picked the bar to shreds to figure out what it could possibly be. It was a HUGE piece of wood! Like a long woodchip went straight through my granola bar. VERY weird. I think I emailed the company about it but I never got a response. I was hoping I'd at least get a free refund box!
@aliconklin - I would've called and taken a photo to show them. If you go to them with proof first, they'll send free food or something neat. I'm sure they get phony complaints ALL the time so it must be really hard to sort through all of them. This McD's story is messed up.
i was with my best friend in panera when she found the length of a dishtowel thread inside of her mediterranean veggie. they only replaced THAT HALF of her sandwich. hahahaha
Normally the process to have a case filed for court is very lengthy, it normally takes while to assess the damage, legal rights on both parties, etc etc. not one of my strong points, but you get where i am going with this.
@getawayfine@xanga -
Seriously? You think that just because McD's isn't gourmet that it's OK to have shards of glass in the food? They need to be held accountable. The legal system is what prevents companies from being negligent.
98% of lawsuits these days are settled out of court. The large amount of money and the fact that McD's is obviously liable will certainly cause them to settle, and for much less than she's asking.
This kind of goes back to my post about Dennis Kucinich suing over an olive pit in his sandwich. At least an olive pit is food-- but glass? Really McDonald's?
@airbornerose@xanga - probably what I should have done. Oh well, if it ever happens again I will certainly take pictures for proof!
@ginakuzmick@xanga - suing over an olive pit is ridiculous haha what a silly guy
That IS really bad, but $600,000 fucking DOLLARS?!? I get irritated when people say this, but REALLY?
:O ouchhh!
ive never found anything in my food, but my friend has gotten soup with hair in it before blehh.
Damn that's a lot of money. On another note, I didn't know there was a spicy McChicken. I don't think you can get it "crispy."
@aliconklin - I agree it seems frivolous to sue over an olive pit - but you can break your teeth on them; my mom did it once. I don't know if Kucinich was actually hurt, so maybe he sued over nothing, but if he were injured they should at least pay his dental/medical bills for it.
The whole "I need millions for my pain and suffering" is a totally American thing to do (and yes, I'm American). Lawyers just figure if we're going to sue them anyway, why not get as much as possible - because then they get more money in fees and percentages.
@PseudoEuphoric@xanga - That's insane, a screw? He should have paid closer attention to what he was putting in his mouth, if it wasn't baked into the crust, surely it was visible. And seriously he must have bit down pretty hard to break a tooth. lol
That's gotta hurt.
@lagnolalia@xanga - That is really really grim... Another reason why I don't order liquids from fastfood places, and am always extra extra nice to minimum wage employees!
@Jal_Phoenix@xanga - Lad
@getawayfine@xanga - 600k is ridiculous. I heard about an experiment a friend of a friend did (I know, its hearsay, but its worth hearin') where he left a MCdonalds burger out in his back garden for a week. Animals ate everything BUT the burger. The Cheese, the bread, the sauce, everything. And that burger was just sitting there, rotting away. Gotta ask yourself, if rats won't eat it, why are you?
